Seeing him as an old man now singing the words of this song adds a whole extra dimension to its depth and poignancy. RUclips doesn't half remind us just how fleeting our lives really are. The years fly by and before we know it we are fast becoming the old folks we used to dismiss as being out-of-step and past it.

Thanks for putting this up, I love Dean Ford! The most wonderful, superb singer, but perhaps the most looked over musical artist ever. He is and always has been such a gentleman, never caught up in the arrogance of the music world.
This song written and performed by The Marmalade in the late 1960's, turned a ordinary song into an array of sounds and feelings that creates a picture in our minds we all encounter as we are forever growing older. It is a very spiritual song about growing up and realizing the world keeps changing whether we like it or not. We are all faced one day with the knowledge that we can never go back to the youthful fantasy of how wonderful the world was before we grew older and such things as love and hate complicates and turns everything upside down and inside out.
However, the song's magic comes not from just the truthful and melancholy lyrics, but from that special and indescribable "thing" that The Marmalade had and put into this song. Every note played on the guitars, and every beat of the drum along with John Ford's perfect pitch and extraordinary singing packaged together with the backing vocals, turned this song into an absolute musical perfection. It is not just as song, it is a feeling. A very strong and hard hitting feeling that we all experience occasionally, and is never forgettable. A song that is so special, it is timeless. Many other highly respected singers and musicians have recorded this song over the years and as they all have been good, none have ever matched what John Ford and The Marmalade did back in the late sixties. And, I know, I will never forget the feeling it creates or the place in time long passed that it instantly transports me to every time I listen to it. Maybe the feeling is a little bit different for each person, but similar enough that we all can relate to it. An absolute masterpiece!
Thank you John Ford for this wonderful musical gift you have given the world. I wish you were my neighbor, that would be cool.

k1j2f30 I just wrote a very similar expose (after saying I wouldn't) on the version with Dean & Tansin. I'm so happy to read someone else can recognize this song and its brilliance that supersedes those who overshadowed it. I mean no respect to the bands I'm thinking of, but I was just listening to The Hollies' "he ain't heavy..." And I've been a huge Hollies fan since I was a child in the 80's and remain one today, but they released that song in 75 and they completely ripped Reflections off right down to the when the drums kick in following the harmonica. Have you noticed that? I don't get why I never heard this song on the radio growing up since it was a hit in the us. I still hear the hollies and of course the bee gees on the radio (also a fan, especially of their more thoughtful, overlooked efforts i.e. I started a joke) but not this masterpiece? I don't know why I'm acting shocked. I'm disappointed is all. I'm not a big Dylan fan but I recognize his abilities and respect his songwriting. I'm a huge Elvis Costello fan, but I've never heard his masterpieces "Shipbuilding" and my personal anthem the slowed down live version of "Everyday I write the Book" on the radio nor Dylan's brilliant song and one of my all time favorites, "I shall be Released." Thanks uh mer uh kuh. "What's so funny bout ✌🏽️❤️👍🏿?" I'll end with this...now is a perfect time for anyone paying attention to give this song its second round of notoriety and this time with the appropriate amount of respect. Until then I'm declaring it the Anthem of Generation X. ✌🏽️

This song was great. Matt. I'm guessing you didn't hear it (back then, if you will) because it was a hit in 1969. It got a lot of airplay in the US at that time and really caught my attention as a then 14 year old. You say you were a child in the 80's. Since, for some reason, it hasn't gotten a lot of regular airplay since then, is why you probably haven't heard it much on the airwaves. This was a one hit wonder, and perhaps one of the the best with that tag. The Hollies and the Bee Gees had multiple hits, so therefore got more airplay. It's great to see that Dean is still performing it almost 50 years later!

This was nice, but the original was incredible. The harmonies, the instrumentals and of course, the lead made it one of the best songs ever. I believe this was the first hit song they wrote themselves. RIP Dean. Thanks for the memories.

Brave brave boy. His voice is still recognisable, even with Parkinson’s. God bless him.

Dean comes from home town of Coatbridge in Scotland where and his bands played many a gig before hitting the big time .... This is is a truly beautiful version of a song he originally co-wrote back in 1969 and he still nails it perfectly

Saw The Marmalade back in the late sixties at the 400 club in Torquay - they were brilliant and they touch the heart and soul - great artists and very under rated !!!

A great song that has become a evergreen , and sadly as the world has changed the lyrics are as relevant today as they were then when i first heard this song in 1969 at 11 years old...
