Thank you for your updates. Being an ex crew member of yachts in the '90s, it is good to see what is going on. Was interested to see the vessel I first knew as MY Stefaren that arrived in Antigua in '91 then became Maridome moored alongside at 11mins 54secs. Spent some good times on her in Greece then around the Caribbean and both sides of Mexico.

Thank you I do not understand who is allowing these super yachts to continue to sail with no country and continue to allow them to turn off the tracking systems? What is the penalty for those infractions supposed to be? Who is responsible? Thank you for your videos.

    • @danb2529
      @danb2529 Год назад +1

There's no obvious responsible entity for (or penalty) for being unflagged. It doesn't, for example, give any country the right to seize that vessel on the high seas. If they enter territorial waters unflagged, that country could refuse them entry. The biggest problem is probably that whatever insurance they had is almost certainly void as no insurance company would cover an unflagged vessel. So if it is damaged (or damages something else) there'd be no payout. This also means any crew onboard won't be covered by medical insurance or any other protections they might expect as part of their employment. Why you'd chose to work on an unflagged vessel ? who knows ? Must have some big bags of cash flown in every so often to keep everyone happy.

Everything there had to be brought in by truck so sizes were limited but we had tons of fun. We would spend a few days at the show and then hit Marina Del Ray before heading home.
One year we rented a Catalina 34 for a week . and sailed it over to Avalon and spent the week sailing around the California coast. Never saw a whale but we had tons of fun. Excellent video. This seems analogous to working for a legitimate business owned by the Mafia. Merely being an employee is not a crime. Helping them cook the books is a crime. Once you participate in illegal acts, you expose yourself to legal jeopardy; and you being a regular person become the weakest link for the Prosecutors to target. It sounds best to avoid working on such Yachts until this matter has been resolved.

For anyone wondering about the 2018 and 2019 dates mentioned, Vekselberg was one of a couple dozen Russians sanctioned in 2018 for reasons related to Russia's annexation of Crimea, way before the 2022 invasion of the rest of Ukraine. The US was keeping watch on him for other reasons like he or his private jet being in interesting places believed related to Trump, Manafort, Ukraine, and other things. V was sanctioned the month after Mueller's team investigating Trump, interviewed V at a US airport. In 2022, additional sanctions were specifically placed against one of his private jets (an Airbus) and his superyacht Tango.
He's the guy who owns 15 Faberge eggs. He seems very into art, including getting art/historic pieces back to their places of origin, so in that sense he is a bit of a philanthropist. For instance, he got some Russian bells returned to Russia from Harvard, by paying through the nose and also having replacements made. So, he's a multi-faceted guy, but like all Russian oligarchs, one very big facet is doing whatever is needed to keep Putin happy with him.
I guess if superyacht crews stick to seafaring duties that's one thing, and if they get involved in covering up for a sanctioned oligarch using his resources to conduct tasks/meetings to help Putin's Ukraine agenda, that is a different thing.

Captain Jack: I know who you are. While unfortunate that crew loses their jobs, this is the reality of working on shifty yachts. I'm sure staff across the industry see some fairly illegal behaviour. This is very much part of that.

Capt. Jack, I don’t like to see crew hurt by the sanctions however, I would never have associated with any Russian business or Oligarch while Putin was/is running Russia. A lot of people drop their moral compasses to chase the money. Their decision to associate with Oligarchs.

This is great information and something I've had in my thoughts regarding crew and sanctioned yachts. The crews have a difficult decisions to make regardless of who owns the yachts there working on. There knowingly covering up for there owners it's a risk there taking. At the end of the day they have families to feed back home. I would think some crew members are fed lies and kept in the dark unknowingly to them. Its them I feel sorry for. Great informative video as ever. Keep up the good work 👍

It's absurd for anybody to think that because you are not directly targeted by sanctions, that you won't be held liable for helping or working for somebody who is. If your boss runs afoul of the law, it is your responsibility to turn your boss in, or at least immediately quit and disassociate yourself from him/her.

Is the lesson to be learned from this saga that the ultra rich would be better renting / leasing property like this rather than ownership, even concealed via various corps and trusts?

Actually, that’s exactly what many of them do! Including existing yacht owners who wish to cruise anonymously to some locations.

Love the channel! Thank you. I have been capturing video of Infinity in Fort Pearce Florida for the past week, I have some beautiful content. I have Marine Traffic app. Do you have any info on how to know when the yacht will be departing fort Pearce? I really want to get it leaving. I will send you some video soon.

We can always use footage of yachts. It might not be in the news right now but at some point it could be. We may also use it for our new spotted section. You can send via wetransfer.com to news@esysman.co.uk

How do actions performed in 2016-19 affect the current situation? Is it because it continued or were the crew actions illegal anyway? Sorry if I missed something in the video but I'm a bit confused on the pre-sanctions charges. Thank you.

If someone was sanctioned it means they are no longer allowed to operate in the US. Regardless of when those sanctions were applied. By doing the things they are have alleged to have done, it means they broke those sanctions rules.

Captain Jack has an interest, likely, in the big business of yachting. He realizes this war won't last forever, and wants to be looked upon as Russian friendly when that time comes so he can reap the benefits.😁😎👍✌
