This game is the peak example of "just because something can be done, doesn't mean you have to do it" People are arguing over whether Yasuke was a samurai or not, I'm saying even if he was a Samurai, its not a good idea making him the protagonist of a game centred around Japan & Japanese culture. Yasuke was a single black samurai(if he was a samurai) out of thousands of samurai who were actual Japanese people. If you pick up a history book 99.999% of Samurais were local Japanese people. So the People screaming "rAcIsT" towards anyone criticising the character choice should realise that Yasuke is an exception, not the rule. When making games & movies & other medium, you don't use an exception as a way of representing a certain culture or history. This seems like culture appropriation if you ask me when devs & studios purposely ignore thousands of actual Japanese people & make a black person as the protagonist just cuz a single black samurai existed. By that logic exceptions exist in all cultures & history would y'all have the same energy if people start doing this shit with every culture??? Making an African based movie with a white lead. Making a latino movie with a chinese lead. Making a norse movie with an Indian lead. That's my point. You will always find these exceptions, but that's not the best way to represent these cultures. And if he was a white person, I would have said the same thing. I'm asian myself & I have never ever liked West & Hollywood depicting our culture & history. They always make it about themselves & their identity politics rather than the actual asian people they are making it on.
Agreed. They could have had you play as the Englishman William Adams (the real-life inspiration for Blackthorne in the Shogun Book) and it would be an equally obnoxious move to throw over playing as a Japanese Samurai or Ronin versus a Gaijin. What's even more notable is, that traditionally historical characters have always been NPC in the AC Titles (Leonardo Da Vinci for example), versus playable characters. They could have easily incorporated the character of Yasuke in the game as such, whilst letting you as the player be an original character.
I think they went for lore focused story, yasuke has historical ties to oda nobunaga, and was a retainer, and then shortly after disappeared from history. there's tons of mystery around him. perfect for creating narratives.
@@repusprimus2872 well it's definitely on ubisoft for sitting on the concept of assassin creed in japan for god knows how long, they should have jumped at the chance and made one right away.
I think it's still a good decision. Even in GoT, Jin Sakai had an internal conflict of maintaining his samurai honor or getting things done in dirty way. So it's clear that Samurai and Ronin never go hand in hand often. So having one character as Samurai ans other as Rohin will also be a good way to show how the life of Rohin differs from Samurai
Thats literally the point of them sepperating the character roles. Jin left the Samurai pretty much by acting like an Assassin. The point of Yasuke is to remain a Samurai while helping the Assassins. Y‘all would cry again because of historical inaccuracy if they made Yasuke an Samurai-Assassin.
Shortly after the events of Valhalla (9th century) the Order of the Ancient essentially reformed into the Templar order. AC Shadows takes place in the 16th century, meaning the Order of the Ancients is long gone at this point, we're not gonna see the Order as we saw it in Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla and Mirage. We're back to Templars VS old-school Assassin Brotherhood.
Still think a story about the greatest Shinobi 🥷 of all time Hattori Hanzo would have been the best choice narratively for an Assassin’s Creed game based in Fedual Japan. Imo 🤔💯
@@TechnoMinarchist the developers literally said this is a "what if" story. If you want a documentary on Feudal Japan you're looking in the wrong place.
This isnt about historical accuracy, its about whats fair. We have never played as a historical figure in ac. Why now? Why can't i play as a japanese man? The frustration is there because ac is a historical fantasy placing you in the shoes of the people native to the setting.
@@mookiestewart3776 calm your self righteous self down. People have a right to be upset about this. Current western politics is clearly more important than historical accuracy.
Ubisoft: We want you to experience Samurai and Shinobi, and we couldn't do that with just 1 character? Me: Really? Cause Ghost of Tsushima was able to do it just fine. Realistically, they did it for 1 reason. Diversity. They wanted to make the MC Yasuke, but knew they had to give us a Japanese MC as well, so they gave as a Japanese woman as well. Their motivations are clear as day.
So??? When they micro-transaction the heck out of the game, or they launch _another_ broken game, or its bloated and boring... most people will be ticked about that and not Ubisofts too little too late feeble attempt at diversity.
@bigskypioneer1898 That's not the point. Plus, Ubi has been MTXing AC to hell for years, and people still buy it. My main issue is this is revisionist history. Little is known about Yasuke, and what little we do know tells us he was little more than a slave/servant of Nobunaga, his sword bearer and used as a court jester from time to time because of his skin color. He was given a sword, but Samurai carried 2 swords and were lords. Yasuke was not a Lord. Nobunaga owned him, and Yasuke followed him around everywhere. Upon Nobunaga's death, Yasuke was imprisoned and then sold back to the Jesuits (who Nobunaga bought him from in the first place). This is revisionist history, and I won't stand for it. They should have stuck to their own corner and made both MCs original characters like they've always done, but now they are trying to push diversity by blowing Yasuke up to mythical proportions, claiming he was a legendary Samurai (which there is no evidence for) and making him into something he's not.
@@tktxlegend4540Hasnt AC always taken liberties with history? All the games have major historical figures who turn out to be templars or assassins or whatever
Yasuke was brought to Japan as a slave too, Ubisoft and AI are going to great pains to paint him as a traveler who gently arrived in Japan. It's generally believed he was never a Samurai either, merely a retainer.

“We wuz samarai.” I can’t guess what your problem with this game is. Though you should know Yasuke was real. Though he wasn’t a samurai as far as I know, just one of Nobunaga’s retainers. But then again, Niccolo Machiavelli wasn’t a member of an Islamic order that disbanded centuries before his birth either so it’s not the first time the franchise played fast and loose with historical characters.
@@pandogstudios1512 You don't have to guess what my problem is, I'll spell it plainly for you - It's absurd and we know exactly why Ubisoft are doing it.
yeah almost like all assasin creed games were historically accurate you guys always have problems with black people in games if it was a white guy youd be preordering
The Ubisoft developer interview highlighted enthusiasm towards weaving historical facts into the story, and a heavy focus on what a foreigner living in Japan during that time would have felt. This guy and other idiots: "The complainers need to shut up, it's a game that is not parading itself around as being historically accurate." Not even a whiff of the supernatural in AC Shaddow's 1st trailer. I loved Origins and Odyssey, but the garbage that's come out since is bargain bin bait for me whenever I'm in the mood for some AAA, WEF, Klaus Schwab, CCP-level, propaganda media.
Honestly it feels so obvious that the guy main character is there for diversity reasons since he is THE FIRST historical person to be an AC main character, it truly feels like they had to find a way to have at least one "diverse" main character and they chose him because people wouldn't be able to complain because hes a historical person, even tho historical people have never been the player character in AC games before, we interacted with leonardo da vinci, we didnt play as him
I love you Luke but every time you say "is just a videogame" a part of my soul breaks and I become more villain that before, we should demand certain quality accord to the promises or the tone of the stories, we should encourage them to be pretentious and demand quality, cause when they want money the dont even ask so

I don't think of rise of ronin as really contributing to the 'good samurai game' pool to be honest. I'm a a stickler for animation quality and graphics generally... I bought rise o ronin, but I haven't been able to bring myself to play it quite yet. And I'm sure I'll finish it before this comes out... but we know what it is with rise o ronin... and in terms of things I value in games... rise o ronin doesn't really do any of it. I love samurai stuff... but I find it hard to get excited for a game that looks how rise o ronin does. And keyley to my feelings... I was pretty disappointed that ghosts of tsushima only had the sword as a proper weapon. The Nagita should also have been a must... so that also left me wanting. (Yes rise o ronin has better weapon variety... but when the whole thing is just such a drag to look at... I can't call that a win) For me, I am hoping this hits enough of the spots without pissing in the project too much with mtx, that I can just enjoy a game I have been anticipating since AC1. I don't need more AC games, and sure, I probably won't need more Ninja/ samurai games... but then that sentiment isn't even remotely true, because obviously ghost of tsushima 2 will be pretty damn excellent...so.. But in my life, I have never been satisfied with the amount or quality of samurai games on the market... so potentially I am just such a weeb that my hunger will never be satiated lol.
Tbh, Rise of the Ronin truly satisfies the itch for late samurai/early Meiji Restoration era. There aren't many games that explore this period; one notable example is the "Fall of the Samurai" expansion for Total War: Shogun II.
6:24 if they’re so concerned with that particular historical accuracy then the playerbase has every right to be concerned with others. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. You cannot say “this wouldn’t be realistic” and then say “we can make shit up for this part” and then say “you’re being a racist”. No, they’re just cherry picking what they want to excuse their reasoning for pushing diversity quotas. Yasuke wasn’t a Samurai, women weren’t Shinobi generally speaking. The most common form of female assassins were prostitutes.

Assassins creed and S.W. outlaws are somekind of wonderful.

So glad that Luke knows about ESG/DEI and understand that people aren’t just being “racist” or some type of phobic but tired of companies pretending to care just to check boxes
Yeah I was expecting Ubisoft to find a way to shove him in there as a character you meet but they really went all out and made him the main character, lol. The game starts in 1579 or something? So instead of deciding on a period and looking for interesting characters, they just picked the character and decided to adjust the timeline to that. They may as well just call it Assassin's Creed: Yasuke.
My guess is… it’s gonna be a mixture of Ghost of Tsushima with a hint of dark souls like combat and or what the previous Assassin’s Creed games combat was. A mixture of splinter cell stealth gameplay for the girl and For Honor gameplay mechanics for the samurai guy. Oh… maybe some Sekiro stuff if they go overboard with gameplay. Basically, it’s gonna be cool for the people that’s into the whole Japanese thing and ghost of Tsushima-soul like games, with Assassin’s Creed name stamped on it. But time will tell. *GAMEPLAY IS KING!*
In the mid-16th century, Africans arrived in Japan alongside Europeans as servants and slaves. Yasuke, an African man, possibly from Mozambique, arrived in Japan in the late-16th century alongside Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano. He found favor with Oda Nobunaga, the daimyō and warlord, and ultimately became his retainer. - Wikipedia
It seems to me like it'll be dangerously close to just a reskin of AC Syndicate with a big burly fighter dude, and a stealthy girl. And I'm not sure how to feel about that.
If this was 8 to 10 years ago I think I'd be hyped. Anything samurai im a simp for. But it's 2024. And Ubisoft. I'll probably try it a couple years after release.
but that was the whole point of the plot in Ghost of Tsushima, you can't be samurai if you fight dishonorably like a ninja, whereas in this game, it has two playstyles and they both work together
Its so funny how everyone just ignores the part right before he said that when he explained that the the 2 differing upbringings, life styles and backgrounds are what can't get mixed. Yes, Jin Sakai exists. But that kind of character and story is clearly not what they're going for. Jin didn't grow up in a clan of shinobi. Naoe did. You can't depict that in a story while also having that character be a samurai. Those are 2 polar opposites. Hence 2 protagonists

Pretty funny how people are complaining that they didn’t use a historical character when he quite literally a historical character while none of the previous AC actually had a historical character. Then there’s people saying “well he wasn’t actually a Samurai”…. Assassins creed constantly sacrifices historical accuracy for the sake of Narrative. I doubt any of these people actually played any of the games.
Don't pretend it's nothing more than meeting diversity metrics. "It's historical" is cope, because as you're saying the games constantly snub history, yet we are meant to believe the one historical black person is them being genuine fans of history compared to SBI or the like? Come on. You realise that's not true.
I think you are confused a bit. People actually complain whether the guy was a Samurai and not just a servant and 2nd, why the choose this particular historical character when in the past NONE of the protagonist was historical figure. My guess: Ubisoft tries to stand out from the crowd of Ghost of Tsushima and Ronin AND it's marketing. It's been a looooonggg time since they had a black protagonist and it was about time to bring one back in ;)
They didn't need to change history to make him an Assassin. That's the problem, they are altering history for politics, it has nothing to do with what makes sense for the narrative. It even seems they aren't acknowledging that he was a slave and wouldn't be treated well which is counter to what they have done before with Freedom Cry and Liberation.
NOTHING you said was relevant. Everyone understands that this is nothing more than a badly veiled attempt at DEI. Historical or not, there are hundreds of stories to be told about Japan, using thousands of characters, yet they chose a black guy?! Yeah.... f*** off....
There's a third category of people who have a problem with the character choice. People are suggesting that any criticism is rooted in racism, but it isn't. William was the protagonist of Nioh, and that was weird at the time too. With Yasuke, it doesn't matter that he was a historical figure. He should be in the game, but the player should be experiencing the game through the eyes of two Japanese protagonists... like Ubisoft has done for literally every other Assassin's Creed game ever. Until now. When they can stealth in a token character. It's absolutely a diversity pick. In any other time period, it would be a cool choice. But not right now. It's painfully fourth wall breaking. But Ubisoft will never admit that they only picked him because he's black. That's 100% why they did. But the will never admit it. And token characters aren't ever a great idea.
I think it’s because there are unfortunately some people that are racist and are upset since they’re racist fr (not everyone is ofc) but there’s definitely a subsection of people where say if Freedom Cry was released today, even though it was a dlc, they would freak out
@@KrimsonDragoon That's fair. I've never had a problem with any AC protagonist until now. And my problem can be summed up as: "Why is a native Japanese duo not good enough?" There are lots of answers to that question. And many of them are very valid. Exploring a culture through the eyes of an outsider can be interesting. But the choice to do it when people have waited so long for AC to be set in Japan just leaves a sour taste. Like they are snubbing some part of Japanese culture to make this happen. To be clear, again, that might not be the case; I'm saying it feels that way, subjectively. I'm genuinely glad for people who can just enjoy the game.

Dude you lame af 😂😂😂

Realistically, they did it for 1 reason. Diversity. They wanted to make the MC Yasuke, but knew they had to give us a Japanese MC as well, so they gave as a Japanese woman as well. Their motivations are clear as day.
6:23 you f*cking clown
Assuming they couldn't do it with one character, they could have just made both of them Japanese given that this is a Japanese assassins' creed.

I can't call that a win)

And my problem can be summed up as: "Why is a native Japanese duo not good enough?"
There are lots of answers to that question.
@@Velarieth I get it but at the same time we’ve seen something similar with Revelations and 4 in terms of playing as people not native to the areas, like I get the concern but if they can execute it right like those games did I think we could be in for a treat especially since this time he’s based off an actual historical figure, as is the girl apparently
I think it would be better if Yasuke was introduced as a playable character for a dlc and use him as a notable npc figure who helps the cause. But I think your comment it literally the first one I’ve seen that isn’t trying to trash talk and call him a slave or a pet.
Honestly I'm really Hyped for this cause I love AC Lol and until GOT 2 this *might* Fill that itch
Tbh by everything we seen about the game it gave me way more hype and helped me overlook the controversy’s
all the ideas and what the developers have talked about, sounds really good, but i really need to see gameplay before even thinking about buying the game, let alone pre-order
You can assume it will look great and be just like other games, just in ancient Japan.
So, nothing really new.
@@DayLight_Era yeah thats why im saying im waiting for gameplay.
Ubisoft also comes from that same river of greed after seeing those prices 😂
Instead of john blackthorne they gave us john blackwashed
Did you know James Clavell *also* based John Blackthorn on a real English navigator that was shipwrecked in Japan in the early 1600's? William Adams really did know and advise the man that became Shogun irl - Tokugawa Ieyasu. If you were going for genuine historical interest in gaijin that visited fuedal Japan. Just like the guy Ubisoft picked to be their melee protagonist. Who really cares? To feudal Japan, gaijin was gaijin - no matter skin color.

Luke, this is all cinematic no actual gameplay, something’s I have learned from my previous preorders for example Anthem, is that cinematics may look good but actual gameplay may differ, I’m not a advocate for anti consumer practices. Ubisoft like EA have the same basic principles, take money now, fix game later. Sorry but no amount of trailers will redeem their bad business practices.
If what Griffin Gaming said is true, about how Yasuke wasnt really a real samurai and he was only presented as such as literally just a joke by the japanese; then Ubisoft has really fallen short of their "historical accuracy" claims
There's aliens, a magic apple, and mythical creatures in these games.
You using griffin as a source and not any of the other RUclipsrs who actually have videos on Yasuke? And no none of them really state he was samurai but they don't spout the claims Yasuke was used as a joke. They go more in depth on how Nobunaga actually used him. The thought that he was just used as a joke in a half truth that is being pushed by racists to make it seem like that's all he was. Griffin is not a reliable source for anything
@jonasking9587 yeah, yet none of that mystical creature BS was in the older games 💀 this has turned into pure fantasy now. It was originally based in pseudo-science (AC1)

I'm not mad about Yusuke because he was black but how does the one big black guy in Japan stay hidden and assassinate people around all these Japanese people? Are we seriously gonna believe he can blend with the crowd and stay hidden? You see the photos of NBA stars in china and they stick out like a sore thumb. If Yusuke was a side character who was Oda's bodyguard and taught you how to fight then would have been no problem. Just makes no sense to have him be the MC in an ASSASSIN's creed game.
Exactly. This shit is just immersion breaking
if the game was set in Japan, wouldn't it make sense to make the main character to be an actual Japanese?
I mean one of the two main characters is japanese. But I guess it doesn't count because sexism. 🫠
Just like it would’ve made sense to have the game set in Turkey star a Turkish man and not an Italian?
@@wintersong2266 You don't make sense she is the right representation for a game in a japanese setting so it will make sense for the MC to be japanese but putting a Male Black MC in a japanese setting is stupid like would it make sense if we put a White American as a MC in an Assassins creed set in Africa? there will be a african Female MC also?

Not saying black protagonists are overdone but for real Asian men are vastly under represented in media…like this wasn’t the game to do this Ubisoft…
I feel it’s on the upturn depending on the region of Asia like East Asia isn’t looking bad rn, Yakuza series been going strong for years, Judgment series, Ghost Of Tsushima, there’s always room for more but on the bright side I’d say East Asia is way more represented than the rest of Asia
@@KrimsonDragoon my main complaint is western entertainment only focusing on a certain ethnic group when trying to “diversify” media. There are more types of ethnic people than just African Americans and it’s just a shame that whenever diversity is pushed into a franchise it usually just results in a black protagonist.
Sleeping Dogs, Yakuza, Ghost of Tsushima, Rise of the Ronin, Sekiro, SIFU etc.
I think they're doing just fine.

I already seeing the trailer dislike bombed because of Yusuke it’s sad. We already have ghost and maybe a potential sequel and rise of the ronin. I think it’s cool we’re getting something different imo.

Okay what did I miss? Countless gamers have been longing for a feudal Japan AC. Now after so many years they finally give us a current gen only AC with said setting which is their most ambitious AC to date and now people are already shitting on it because one of the playable characters is Yasuke? Who was an actual historical figure BTW.
Yeah maybe he would have been better as an NPC (Sweet Baby cough cough).
But why do people think everything will suck??
people understandably don’t trust ubisoft
"Current gen only" isn't Shadows a MOBILE GAME ? I've heard so many claims that it is only available on Mobile devices.
Historically wasn't a Samurai but I dont really care
Cause it looks lame. It don’t matter if they did what people wanted if it doesn’t even look good
@snaker9er I've heard this claim too. Source ? If youtube will even let you post URL? Whenever I do my comments get flagged.
I originally thought they had Yasuke in the game for just diversities sake, until I found out he's a real person in history. Hopefully they do him and Naoe's characters well. I'm definitely interested in the game. Though I will be waiting for actual gameplay.
How is it that so many ignore the blatant insult to the Japanese? They're doing a Japanese AC version and they let the player kill Japanese (actual samurai) with an African based on some obscure black man who wasn't even a samurai?
Bro we were killing Turkish men as an Italian in revelations and nobody said anything about that, and and don’t even get me started on Black Flag, and other potential examples
This statement literally doesn't make any sense, why would the Japanese be insulted by this?
Who cares about a foreigner killing people? Are you also going to ignore the female protag also killing Japanese men? Is it only a problem because he's a black man?

There’s already a number of games set in medieval Japan with Japanese male protagonists, so having a Japanese woman and black man as main characters seems interesting.
Especially as a foreigner living in Japan, having one of the characters be a foreigner, kinda has me cautiously interested… and if it had been a white guy, it would have been too much like Last Samurai. Anyway, will wait till we see some game play.

25:05 It still is for diversity sake cus in AC we never played as historical character, all characters are fictional made by Ubisoft. But they can't do it this time without using the name Yasuke to avoid backlash. So they did this intentionally. Now, if you complain, they can just say "huh, but this is a real person tho" as an alibi. We would actually love it more if Yasuke is an NPC that fight with us like that indian man from AC Syndicate.
I don’t see the difference if they are going to invent historical facts for the character. I agree they shouldn’t contradict history, but writing a character within it is fine

If you prefer GoT over AC thats perfectly fine, but then why are you here in the first place?
I love how so many people are arguing about Yasuke not being 100% accurate, meanwhile AC has literally always fucked with historical characters a little bit for the sake of the story.
Not to mention the Assassins never have been accurate either like in reality they pretty much were just in Persia and the Levant yet in AC they’re everywhere and survived to the modern day (which they did not)
