    This is the title that I totally respect because of its history, lineage, legacy, tradition, and prestige because of the greatest wrestlers of all time holding this title and with it having a lot of surprising challengers of other wrestlers I know about very well on the independents and in any other wrestling promotion in professional wrestling. That's why I'll always respect this title

    Yeah, you are right. The NWA is pretty much the only World Title that is currently is being defended in the United States and Overseas.
    The NWA govering body threats their world title as a sports titles, not like some promotions that treat their version of the world title as a tool to extend a storyline or used as a popularity contest.
    WCW (1988-1994) had potentional but executives and politics (1995-2001) killed that promotion.
    TNA and ROH STILL have potential to be great promotions.

    To this day and I’m 60 years old, the NWA world championship is the only one I respect, the only one I’ll pay attention to. Going all the way back Luthers who was my dad‘s favorite and honestly my favorite after watching so much footage of him and thank God it’s out there, he did set the standard for what a world champion should be a shooter, hooker, absolute bad ass. That was Lou, Jack Briscoe was probably the closest thing after that as far as a legit guy who could take anybody. But at the end of the day the NWA champ is still the only one I pay attention to and respect. And I’m glad that Nick Alldis is wearing that strap now, because no one else in my opinion outside of Brock Lesnar could convince me he’s the man.

    I actually prefer the old style of the shownmanship aspect of wrestling they had in the NWA's glory days, it felt like these guys were in a competition and not a glorified soap opera. That said, having been raised on the more fast paced wrestling used in WWE, I have trouble focusing on the slower, more scientific and technical style the territories used.

    The real NWA title continuity was carried under the WCW title and then in WWE as the World Heavyweight title. The NWA simply stated the title on WCW is no longer the NWA title so they created a replica of it and claimed that it’s the same title.

    Received and saw the documentary. It's a really good look back at a once great ea of professional wrestling. I know the NWA is still going today, and while I admire the efforts to keep the alliance alive, the truth is that the NWA died the day Jim Crockett sold JCP to Ted Turner. It could've been resurrected when Shane Douglas won the title in 1994, but ECW had other ideas. The NWA had its last best hope of remaining relevant during its partnership with TNA, but again, TNA had other ideas.

    Ed "Strangler" Lewis, Thesz's trainer and mentor, held that NWA belt 5 times.
    Strangler Lewis was virtually invincible during the 1920's. Many of Lewis's opponents were legitimate grapplers themselves, but they knew well enough Lewis's reputation as a "hooker" who could genuinely cripple an opponent in a heartbeat if he needed to, if the business dictates that he do so.

    • @wrestlingconnoisseur
      @wrestlingconnoisseur 7 лет назад +2

      "Strangler" Lewis never held the NWA belt, he held the original lineage version world heavyweight title three times (which has no correlation with the NWA title, no matter how much WCW claimed otherwise in the early-90s), the Boston AWA title once and the New York State Athletic Commission version once.

  • @bipblake

    And the sad part to all this is, due to bad ownership/management & miss-spending of how you would get your wrestlers from show to show, plus allot of greed from another federation of whom shall remain nameless, (though I'm sure we ALL know who that is) the NWA now much like the territory's cease to exist. Towards the end, the NWA or WCW or whatever you wanna call it, myself it'll ALWAYS be the NWA tried to live a champagne life, with a beer glass taste. And THAT'S how they went belly up. That was even said in a documentary that I saw. These days, I don't even watch wrestling. In fact I done pulled the plug on cable all together. And if I DO watch wrestling, its on youtube. All I will say is, I'm just so glad & was so blessed to be here to see wrestling, back when it truly was fun to watch & back when it truly was KING. I wouldn't even piss on the crap they call wrestling today, that's how bad it is. The talent's great, but the writing sucks, & no matter how great the talent, if the writing sucks, so will the product. Don't believe me? Then ask yourselfs why so many shows on TV during the fall season never returns for a 2nd season for. The actors are the talent, but they have writers who make the show, & the talent reads what the writers put in the script & 1 of 2 things will happen. It'll either be a hit or a miss. And much like allot of today's "New" shows, wrestling to, is a miss. I'll never watch it again, I can tell ya that.

    3) Championship Belt Design. I'm a HUGE fan of the NWA Championship and have nothing but respect for it, there comes a time when you HAVE to come to terms when something is "Out Dated" Update the championship by having a similar design but alter it a little so it meet to today's standards, perhaps a little bigger, and a more gold look to it. 4) Legit Challengers. Nobody cares if Adam Pearce is defending against Joe Blow. Bring in "legit challengers" at least in the fans eyes. Start from there.

    Harley Race was and still is the shit. Could you imagine Harley Race beating the hell out of "FANDANGO" and dragging the carcasses of those Legion of Doom impersonators or those groups of wrestlers who dress in black (sorry, haven't watched wrestling in 7 1/2 years--accept for Flair's retirement, HBK's, a few guest appearances etc.) lol. Then He will grab a microphone and growl "7 times I was the world heavyweight champion. I spilled blood all along that ring in amounts you've never seen. Dog Caller Matches, I Quit matches, Cage Matches......"
    Makes me sick how they hire celebrities and men from the UFC (no offense to these guys) who don't care about wrestling; well some do don't get me wrong.
    And what about the Women's Division? I've been a wrestling fan since 1988, saw my first match in 1990 with my father (wow, what an experience. These guys knew what they were doing). There were tough women, unlike WWE'S Porn Stars. Just think of women like Medusa, many names from TNA (in its infancy) and in other promotions and long ago.
    I even wanted to be a wrestler. I trained at a school and passed even. But wasn't taken because I was so skinny. That's cool because I love where God has placed me now, but that experience made me respect the sport and realize how these guys literally sacrifice everything for us (families, health, life) night after night just to entertain us. I don't know about you but those are high stakes and speak volumes about how spiritually tough they are.

If promoters would work together, someone put some money in it, secure a good TV Deal with the main NWA show, spawned out to the smaller NWA shows, it could work.. But won't happen, too many egos

    The NWA is a legacy brand that several businessmen decided to reconstitute with the aspirations of making money by re-living the 'glory' years. It would be like me buying the naming rights to a defunct chain like 'Woolworths' and opening up a business. The NWA as it stands today is a loose confederation of indy leagues barely staying afloat. As the economy continues to twist and turn, I suspect leagues will be dropping out and/or folding.

    The NWA needs create a promotion to be the frontrunner for the NWA which is a govering body, not a promotion. One name comes up is NWA: Universal Pro Wrestling (UPW).

    A shame that it's lost so much of it's prestige. The NWA World championship hasn't been the pinnacle of pro wrestling in nearly 30 years. Some of these guys are living in a different era.

      The last time the NWA Championship was treated as a "world title" was when TNA had the title. After TNA relinquished control of NWA Championship, the title was defended in small indie promotions. The NWA Championship briefly regained its prestige when NJPW gained control of the title with Hiroyoshi Tenzan being the champion. However, Tenzan lost the title in 2015, which means the NWA Championship is back to being defended in bingo halls and school gyms rather than in major wrestling promotions such as TNA or NJPW.

    This is what the NWA needs to do. 1) National TV Deal. Personally they should have NEVER severed ties with TNA. At least TNA gave them exposure and still had a Champion traveling from place to place. 2) Established Names. While I like Adam Pearce, most of these people are just indy guys. NWA should bring in free agents like Jerry Lynn, Lance Storm, Steve Corino, Sabu, Buff Bagwell, Scott Steiner, Scott Norton, to give an example of established names that are out there.

    A lot wrestling organizations started out as NWA affiliates, such as the WWE, World Class Championship wrestling, UWF (Mid South) and WCW which started out as the Mid Atlantic area, ECW and TNA. All of these pulled out and tried to go National during the pro wrestling boom of the 80s.

    That is not true, mrbloodcrush. The NWA World Heavyweight Wrestling Title is being defended not only in Japan and the US on NWA Southern All-Star Wrestling TV and dozens of promotions, there are negotiations right now for defenses in Australia for AAW and Canada in the works.

    We Wrestling fans know the NWA as a National TV Promotion which later became WCW after Turner brought Jim Crocket Promotions in 1988. in March 2001, WCW came to a tragic end when the whole wrestling organization was purchased from Time Warner by rival wrestling promotion, the WWE. right now, TNA is the new WCW since it was founded by the Jarretts and owned by the PandaEnergy Company.

    What I never understand is who books it? Does the title ever stay in one place? Does each territory have to have a lottery number or something to determine the next challenger? Why keep the title on one guy for so long? Who decides to be the next champion? How come no European ever won the world title? Do they still keep the old rules of a title bout?

    • @brandonselitetv1436
      @brandonselitetv1436 6 лет назад

      Josh Waldorf NWA Territory system ran like The Commission(Mafia), Each member of the board which was made up of promoters had a vote on where should the champion head next, who should he lose it, if the championship is vacated like when WCW left the NWA, NWA Board went through a vote on who shouls hold a tournament for the vacated NWA Title & they all agreed that NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling(yeah that ECW) should hold a tournament since after WCW left the NWA, ECW became the number one most televised NWA member.

    I have, plenty of times.
    The 80s was more "sports entertainment" than today. The 80s had a damn Saturday morning cartoon.
    WWE champion doesn't travel? So the WWE doesn't go on South America, European, or Asian tours?
    There is no territory system anymore, that's what happens with competition.
    Who draws more crowds today? WWE or NWA?
