  • From the Film Australia Collection. Made by The National Film Board 1947. Directed by Catherine Duncan. This is the story of Pat Oliver, an ex-sailor of the Royal Navy who came to Australia to build a new life after the Second World War. Like thousands of others, Pat was attracted by the opportunities on offer in a developing nation. The film paints a glowingly positive portrait of working and living conditions, from union-negotiated hours and wages to new homes being built by the Housing Commission. It follows Pat's experiences - a job in a factory, boarding with a family, a beer at the pub after work and Saturday at the races - until his new girlfriend encourages him to take advantage of rehabilitation training under the Government's scheme to teach ex-servicemen a skilled trade.

38 schillings = $3.80 in 1966. Man what a time in Australia. My parents came to Australia in the late 50s as postwar immigrants from Europe. Dad had to work wherever they sent him for 2years, mum in the factories making shoes and jeans. Gave us a good life.

Wouldn't it be great to have schools like this for todays unemployed and new immigrants! Today I'm afraid people don't have the same desire to contribute to society.

My great great grandfather (& mother) were pioneers of Australia coming out from Somerset England in 1825, he was also a friend of John Batman the founder of Melbourne & purchased a property from him in Ben Lomond Tasmania before coming to the mainland in the 1830’s it was people like them that made Australia what it is up to the 1980’s as from then on we became to reliant on China & now look what we have now, no large manufacturing industries, all of our utility services sold off to greedy private enterprise & the farms being sold off to China! Even water is BIG business, the migrants coming here today are not so lucky as they were for several decades post WW-2, thanks to the Politicians of both sides they are selling us out to China the SLOTHS & are directly responsible for stuffing up this country that is happening now into the future, they all have investments in projects that line their pockets, geez even Darwin ports now owned by the Chinese let alone John Holland constructions! We don’t even have reliable BASE load power in Victoria thanks to the socialist Andrews govt. and a white elephant desalination plant, the future is not with re-newables!!!!! Mark my words our beloved country is stuffed!

What you're watching here is the start of the Great Australian Dream, where home ownership became the norm rather than the exception as it was before the end of the War. The only reason most Australians ended up owning their own homes was because Commonwealth, State and Local governments made home ownership a priority. Since the late 90's governments have made pumping up prices and high density housing a priority and the latest Intergenerational Report expects most Australians to be renting in high density housing before 2050. Apparently this is progress, just the way it is.
    RIP, the Great Australian Dream.

Hi David. As the Film Australia Collection is made up of government sponsored films (propaganda) you will not get a critical view of Australia generally. Especially from this era. If they show Australia in a negative way it may be through retrospect where viewed through today's standards they can be seen as racist, for example. However the NFSA collection holds other no government films such as those we published recently from the Realist Film Unit which tell a very different Australian story: Homelesness in Australia: the post-war era
