Thought I would post about a few of the comments on this video. 1. The instrument is AC550 BHG made in France by Courtois! 2. The method in this video is called the "pivot system." Although it is the way many established players approach the different ranges of their instrument..it is not the only way...as with any idea related to improving as a trombone player, I would suggest that you try this method and if it doesn`t work for you, try another! Often times, there is more than one path:-)
Nice synopsis. It's probably worth mentioning that while Mr. Pollard describes blowing the airstream more downward for the high range, this only applies for downstream players. Some people (about 10%) do the opposite: blow up, toward their nose, for the high range.
Definitely a Bass Trombone and customized either with or by Hagmann valves. The "third trigger" is actually a rest bar. I use one myself, but it's one my Rath which supports the back of the hand.
Your on the right path, I was at a reliable Db at the end of eight grade, I'm a freshman in high school now and not even a year later it's become a reliable triple G (what would be at the end of a 3 octave G major scale), however, since not really any pieces use that note very often, I'm beginning to work on pedals, 12c I'm hitting pedal F.
Thanks very much! I actually recently found an article on wilktone about this subject.Apparently Farkas wrote something after he published "The Art of Brass Playing" that talked about more discoveries he had made, and how some of the information in that book (which is where I read about my previous thoughts) was incorrect.
I was taught that what is bad is changing mouthpiece placement while you play. I find it useful and beneficial to change the direction of air flow in order to maximize flexibility, and richness of tone, as I move through the range. These moves do not constitute changing the embouchure; rather they are part of getting the most out of the emboucher. Air direction can affect air speed and distance between lips, all of which can prove beneficial, for me at least.
Staying relaxed makes all the difference my tone is better than ever in most of the register my middle register is a bit airy though so I need to figure that out. But my low and high register is good sounding
Rochut Melodious Etude Book 1. Great tool. You can play them as written, down a octave, up an octave, in different keys, etc. Although most of the etudes aren't too difficult, all professional trombonists play around with these. Very useful.
He is not moving the mouthpiece around. It stays in contact with the lips without shifting at all. What changes is the direction of the flow of air. This is primarily accomplished by moving the lips inside the mouthpiece to direct the air one way or another. I would like for Denson to discuss what role jaw movement plays, if any, in moving through the range.
Although this is 7 years late, it’s never to late to start learning.. for the small price between 6-8 thousand for that instrument with the sexy tru-bore valves
Mr. Pollard, when you do the multiple octave arpeggios, do you consciously use the jaw to change the direction of the air flow in the low/extreme low registers up through the upper register?
Rochut Etudes are a collection of etudes written by Marco Bordogni. They are great for transposing into different clefs to help expand your range. you can find all the rochut etude books at Hickeys.com
Andy Peacock It is a bass trombone, a tenor trombone has no loops, and only 1 tuning slide. The bass trombone has 2. The contrabass trombone has 3-4. I've played all of them, but since I'm only 14 I don't have the lip strength to play as low as in this video
I love the high notes, on my tiny little tenor trombone I'm starting to try to play above high D, it's hard, but I'll get there, only been playing 8 months. My pedal notes need some help though, I can only get to a G on pedals, but I'm stunningly sharp on pedal notes. My third position should make pedal Ab, but it's always a G. Can anyone help with that part?
When I first discovered pedals, G was in first for me. for me it required a very large embrouchure change. I had to really tighten the corners, almost like a smile. And practice them all the time, and the pedals will slowly become more in tune.
Hello Mr Pollard, May I ask you a question? Are there any tricks allowing trombonists going actually lower than G1? As far as i know, "standard" trombone is a G1-F5 one, am I right?
hello good afternoon teacher, not really speak English but I got to use the google translator, but hey, I wonder teacher about this and price in dollars trombone Yamaha YSL-610 MU because I am interested in buying one of these ... THANKS FOR THE FACT THAT I CAN PROVIDE........ I LIVE IN CALI COLOMBIA
I thought shifting your embochure to point the airstream down that far was a bad thing and that you were supposed to play high with air still going straight down the horn? Can someone clarify? :l
Don Newman imagine bouncing a ball down a long hallway. a low note is like throwing it down the hall without touching the floor or ceiling. a high note "bounces" the air off the floor and ceiling (for example 7 times for a high Bb) resulting in more oscilations and a higher frequency. so just imagine throwing the ball downward at the floor to try to bounce it an exact number of times before it reaches the end. silly analogy but hope it helps.
start with a pedal Bb, then gliss downward until the note fails to speak. keep a deep open airstream like fogging a mirror. there is a trick to pedal notes lower than G so don't feel bad. just keep practicing slow smears and lots of warm air. throw in some octave up notes to give your embochure context. happy pedaling!
It sounds like a flying saucer is in the room....
That Pedal F made me a bit damp.
Best Pedal F i've ever heard.

That pedal F is delicious

Wow, I've been struggling with my high range for a long time, but focusing on the direction of the airflow helped a lot. Thank you for the great tips!
This was very helpful I hit a high f my first try! I've never been able to do that before. Thank you so much
You are a brass god
that pedal F turned me on

excellent..thank you Denson..diaphragm,relaxed throat and air direction is the key..and play play play
These videos are fantastic. Thank you for the time!
Literally that "more air" part helped me nit about 2 mort notes higher and lower
Wha-that is the highest I've heard a low brass instument-ANY instrument on that hand-that I have ever seen!
That's what I've been taught too! I eve had to build up my tone from the very beginning after doing that for a while!
Thanks very much! Thank you. I have been having trouble figuring out how to go high and go low. No will understand it

These videos really help! Thanks!

Dem high notes though.
Great explanations!
高音域が出なくなり困っていたのですが、この動画を見て少し改善された気がします。
アルペジオ!練習に取り入れてみます。ありがとうございました😆
Hey what's the excercise you're talking about. 'row shoes' ?
Rochut Melodious Etude Book 1. Great tool. You can play them as written, down a octave, up an octave, in different keys, etc. Although most of the etudes aren't too difficult, all professional trombonists play around with these. Very useful.
row shoes hahahahaha i got a good laugh out of that lol
I play the same trombone that you played in high school. The Bach 50b bass trombone.
it opens my mind!!!! great video!!!

...so how much would a trombone like that cost me...
Although this is 7 years late, it’s never to late to start learning.. for the small price between 6-8 thousand for that instrument with the sexy tru-bore valves
You remind me of Mads Mikkelsen, but I don't know why :D
But you're the better artist!
would these approaches apply to trumpet as well?
2:45 Everyone noticed the slight correction for the f? Something most trombone players don't keep in mind when playing...
what size mouthpiece you use
Mr. Pollard, when you do the multiple octave arpeggios, do you consciously use the jaw to change the direction of the air flow in the low/extreme low registers up through the upper register?
Amazing sound

Could you do videos on tongue speed and tone quality?
I dont know wich is more difficult, low or high register.
Chap stick is not recommended for brass players as it adds a awkward coating to your lips. What you can use is Chop Saver for when you finish playing.
I think it depends on your embouchure. For you that may be perfectly fine.
The blowing back out was always my problem.
I can hit the Pedal Bb just fine but as soon as I move the slide out the notes escape me.
Any tips on how to improve lower range without the use of extra valves? I'm looking to be able to play in the key of low B flat.
hola soy de cali colombiay sus videos son muy buenos gracias por ensallar sus conocimientos
@ Steve Vang, it is a rath bass, so alot... more than 6,000 most likely
Is this a bass trombone? Or can those go even lower?
(Forgive my ignorance, i'm not a brass player at all - just satisfying my own curiosity)
That is a bass trombone. The Contrabass trombone does go lower.
Thank you :)
Consider my curiosity satisfied

heartbreaker contrabass trombone don’t often have that many valves. It’s usually for 1 to at most 3
The Blue Bone he said tuning slides...
wawawawawawawawawawa............
Thats a gorgeos trombone

@@samshaw1459 I remember Ab was in First for me
Ist probably just two triggers. Bass has two triggers but three tuning slides and tenor has one trigger but two tuning slides.

THE SOUND is completely invaded by a low pulse....very annoying.
Thank youuuu!!!!
Many many thanks! 'Row shoes' haha Now it all makes sense.
What do I do if I shoot my air upward to play higher octaves? Or am I wrong?
What is this (forgive my spelling) 'row shoes'?? I've never heard of it.
I wish I could hit those high notes...
I can hit a half partial b flat with no problem :)
Do you use chap stick and does chap stick really help you play?
What kind of valves are those? I've never seen rotary valves that thick.
I believe those are Hagmann valves.
They are triggers to Lower the pitch
The best!!

I use vaseline, and it actually can be applied while playing.
Wait, is he playing on a bass trombone?
Yes.
I asked the same thing
What horn is that?
Courtois, they make his professional model bass trombone
What type of trombone is that
Courtois AC550.
$7,000 Trombone? O.o
Joe Alien more than that!
+Aidan Ritchie No.It's AC551BH.
Oops! Close enough.
Why is there horror music in your video
😉😉😉💪💪💪
Matthew Lane-take care of that instrument...it is a good one! Tell Mr. Erdogan that I said "hello!"
Man, I've tried and tried, I CAN'T HIT A PETAL FRICKIN' F
Zachary Peterson That's a Bass Trombone, so the pedal F might not be playable on a Tenor Trombone
start with a pedal Bb, then gliss downward until the note fails to speak. keep a deep open airstream like fogging a mirror. there is a trick to pedal notes lower than G so don't feel bad. just keep practicing slow smears and lots of warm air. throw in some octave up notes to give your embochure context. happy pedaling!
Jeremy McLeroy thanks for the advice!
Tiny-Orange15 I am playing it on a bass trombone
Zachary Peterson I find that puffing my cheeks at the start of the note helps with response.
Sounds more like a didgeridoo actually.
No need for trumpets at this point
Haha Evidently - I had no idea....
It's a Courtouis
как перевести на русский?
I like that spelling better haha
I don't understand why a musician would post a video with such a major audio fault.
My highest note is an F5 and Im a sophmore
///translait in russia !!!!!!!
