Rob Smith talks with artist Steve Bloom about his interesting life in art. Steve takes us on a journey from his early days in South Africa during apartheid to his current focus on traditional printing and experimenting with painting after going through some life-changing events and a near-death experience.
Steve's impactful painting, "Mariupol," (Shown in the Storytellers exhibition) was inspired by the war in Ukraine. It reflects the profound loss and devastation caused by intentional violence, similar to Picasso's famous work, "Guernica".
Steve's fascination with images started when he was young, leading him to explore photography during the apartheid struggles in the 1970s. The conversation unfolds his career, from retouching photos to establishing a successful company in London. A significant moment came when he shifted to wildlife photography, creating well-received books and outdoor exhibitions that focused on bringing art to public spaces. He shares stories of challenging wildlife shoots, including risky underwater shots of swimming elephants.
Bloom also talks about the delicate balance between expressing himself as an artist and the commercial side of his work. He emphasizes his preference for avoiding commissioned work to maintain artistic autonomy.
Now in his seventies, Steve reflects on changing his approach to photography and experimenting with traditional printing methods. His meaningful art and passion for creative exploration ensure that he will continue to pursue his artistic journey.
