- I go over all the gear I took on a month long motorbike adventure through Australia. From camping gear, bike gear, repair gear and filming gear, through New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania on my Royal Enfield Himalayan.

Hi Joe, I'm heading over to OZ for 1 year solo ride from California. The one thing I am taking that you could probably use the most..is called a Scrubba. Not cheap, but can wash the clothes easily and can be used as a wet sac if needed as well. I love the RE Himy, I will be buying used rather than shipping over...undecided on the bike. I have a Harley and a BMW Dakar...cheers maybe we will meet up on the backroads...(I'm starting my gear reviews first, while recovering from ACL injury..then to OZ...)
You'll have an epic time, 1 year means you'll be able to explore a lot and not have to rush. You probably already know but make sure you do the north in our winter (June July August) or as it is called the dry season, as the wet season up there is brutally hot and there is a lot of rain.
I hope you leg recovers soon, it not fun being sidelined.
@@freewayproject yes I've been 2xs before for playing then coaching soccer back when I was young.. lol now I'm going for me... yes I have many highlighted roads, national parks and probably 1 month on Tas... thank you for the weather reminders...yes hoping for a speedy recovery I was supposed to be there already lol...
The Mountain DA dual action mini pump is what I carry. It pumps on the up and down stroke, and it's small and compact. I've even used it on car tires, and carry one in all my vehicles.

Great deep dive of everything needed for the ride plus the gear. Yeah, lenses are tons of fun but hard to bring em all. haha I'm looking for a news sports camera.. haven't liked the gopro because of built in compression ect.. Will try the osmo 4. Excited to watch more vids. Cheers
The Osmo 4 seemed to be the best best, but the just released inst360 has HDR filming and one thing that is an issue when filming from the bike is afternoon or mornings when riding towards the sun and the dynamic range isn't good enough on all previous action cameras. Maybe something to investigate if it's been an issue for you.

On straps ,I've been using the same set of ROK straps for about 20 years ,terrific kit.

Thanks mate. Yes it a bit of gear, but when you on the road for an undetermined time, it get hard to scale right back. I recon I could lose 10kg which would then allow me to carry a little more gear 😂. But I'll be taking less on the next trip with one or two additions.
That's why the Himi works for me, I am never in a rush. If I get to the destination that means the rides over and that sucks.
I had the same pump on my bike but it was too shiny and a magpie stole it . Also I've ridden trips and carried a cooker which never got turned on, coz even if it's wet and cold just shoveling in some cold tin and crashing to sleep after a hard day riding seems way better than making any more effort. And every day riding on a bicycle camping trip is a hard one.😂 Thanks for the great vlogs, more cinematic than home movies, love your work it's wonderful.
glad you are enjoying them, yes it is surprising what you think you might use but never do.
Not too many motorcycle related gear comments, Joe...upgrade you boots.....to at least a Forma Evo Adventure boot....with the jet boil you did not use as tinned tuna will do, morale and warm food at the end of the day is a morale booster, even if you make a warm milo, or tea....especially if it is cold. One of your videos through the flinders you had a headache and said you were dehydrated....use a camel back water bladder, as dehydration can kill. Apart from that, keep the videos coming.
Hi Rob, I do have different boots now on the current ride a pair of TCX, I did have a pair of Forma adventure boots but I don't have the best feet and struggled with them (most high moto boots), I have the same issue when riding my dirt bike in my dirt bike boots so can't ride for long periods. Luckily on this trip 99% on the time I am on tarmac of graded dirt roads only occasionally going on trails and taking it easy when I do.
I grew up in the Northern Territory and just never got into hot drinks so again why I didn't pull the Jet Boil out and luckily never need a morale boost.
I have a Kriega hydration backpack for when I ride my dirt bike but on these month long rides I am limited with space so couldn't bring it, if I did I couldn't carry the camera back pack so wouldn't be able to film. I did have 2 1/2 litres in the camera backpack but it seems it wasn't enough, next time I'll have to strap 4 litres to the bike.
Editing new videos now hopefully have an new one out by the end of the week.

Glad it help Louis, I'll probably change a few things for the next journey. I am going to head through SA so will probably check out the Flinders Range too. Not sure what exactly, hopefully I'll stumble onto some decent trails.
Thank you so much for the gear run down. I keep finding myself packing far to much on the short camping trips I end up doing. Would be curious to see a link list for some of the gear (Maybe some affiliate ones so you can get some coin back too!) Currently debating between the Himalayan 411 and a Husqvarna Svartpilen 401bike wise... My cheap Braaap ST250 just isn't cutting it!

So I might be able to give you some information on you debate. last year I rode around Australia with 2 mates, we were all on Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 you can see some photos on instagram.com/freewayproject/ if you scroll down a bit. If you have any questions just let me know.
Main thing is on 401 is faster accelerating, more dynamic to ride on the road, top speed is higher, it can ride on dirt roads.
So depends on what type of riding you are doing, my next video goes into the Himalayan more, but it can carries more gear, seating position is more upright better for long days on the bike. Windscreen helps, Fuel tank is bigger so longer range, and is way more capable off road, like can get you down most harder tracks where the 401 wouldn't have a chance.

Glad you enjoyed the series Ken. I am about to get on the road again for another journey so I might look at a video like that in the future.
I do make feature documentaries and have done TV documentary series also. On RUclips it is a bit different as it is real grab and run footage (compared to a normal documentary where you have time to work out ideas, shots and story lines etc) and editing has gone down to a week or less instead of months or years. I only check each episode once otherwise I would pick each one apart. 😂
A lot of people seem to think it is all about gear were it is actually about telling a story, so if you can piece that together in your head as you go, that will inform you about what you should film or talk about next. So the same situation with motorbikes it's not the motorbike but the skill of the rider.
Awesome rundown of your gear. I learnt quickly from when i traveled to the US to do the PCT about keeping things simple and light. The Big Agnes is an awesome tent. I think a lot of the motorcycling community could learn a thing or 2 from the through hiking ultra-light community in the US. it really transfers across well. I think I have to get down to Tassie next after watching this series! looking forward to the next one.
The PCT is an awesome thru trail. I've also done the Tahoe Rim trail, the Sunshine Coast trail up in Canada and a few other smaller one in North America.
Tassie is definite worth the effort.
Next video is on the Himalayan, how I found it for my kind of riding.
I am heading off on the next journey this week, heading west.

I have just left on another journey this time heading west, I have made a few changes to the gear, hopefully the changes works better, I'll have to wait and see.

Have a look at Instra Go2, for action camera. Have a look at Marc Travel, he uses 4 of them. I have one, and been lucky enough to get a USB Power adapter. I also have a DJI Action 1. I just got a USB charger for my Canon 600D, if and only if, I can fit it in, will I take it. Looking forward for the next instalment.

Awesome set up, I have only just picked up my Himmie after your inspiration and I am nearing the end of my first trip, I did 74km before setting off on a week long road trip from Melbourne - Adelaide - Melbourne, I have also tried to film as much as possible of the interesting parts, I think I'll wait till the weather gets better before actually going camping on the bike but I am getting it all sorted out now

I think I'll try a few different setup things on this trip also, I guess it is an ongoing refinement.

I really like the idea of the hard panniers over my current soft ones as well, just a bit more protection.
Today was probably the worst day of my trip, spent 90% of it riding in the rain to the Grampians

Yes I have changed the back one a few times. It's as easy as changing a dirt bike tyre, so still an effort but not as bad as trying to change some other motorbike tyres where just breaking the bead is a mission.
The lens selection surprised me. I assumed you’d have a 24-70 GM with you. 👍🏻 Primes are so sharp tho. 🤓
I have a 24-70 GM but didn't take it, It's bigger, heavier, and it just ........ well there's no feeling to the images, I used it when taking photos of stuff like product shots where everything needs to be in focus or I have used it at world championship sports events where the action is fast and furious, were the main goal is just getting a shot (and when the action is too close for a 70- 200).

Awesome video my friend, thank you for taking the time to explain it and show us. It's crazy how much you can fit in there! I was half expecting a kitchen sink to come out at one point. Planning some short trips myself and there's really not much info on carrying all of that gear, especially specific things like the iTechworld battery - I actually have the exact same one and it's good to know it fits in the panniers nicely.
Wondering if you could add a 12V lighter plug to recharge it? I use mine to keep my camera gear charged between shoots in my car that has a 12V lighter plug in the boot and using the included 12V charger it basically just stays full - not sure how that would go being in the pannier though. Not 100% sure but I think it only draws around 5-6A to charge, works brilliantly, given your long distances that would have a full charge from 0% in 5-6 hours or so.
I've seen a few vids now of guys using a good solid magic arm and mounting a proper camera to the handlebars; I imagine with the Himalayan's windshield you could probably have it around there for protection and get some pretty cool angles, looks pretty epic for riding footage with proper 180deg shutter. A cheap little 7artisans wide-angle or something would be a really light setup for that too. Also the DJI Mini 3 Pro is the perfect motorbike drone imo. Amazing quality, tiny and afforable
Glad you got something from it Chris. I have a USB plug added to my bike which I forgot to mention 🤦🏼♂️. I will also show my solution for power in the first couple episodes of this next trip (no idea if it will work 😂 we shall see).
There is a new Sony camera out with a full frame sensor that is small, I am not due for a new camera for a while but will have a look in the future. I'll have to find out how they used the magic arms to mount them. The only thing with having a windshield is, how will the camera deal with the focus point, if it keeps picking up the windshield everything else will be out of focus, If I put it in manual focus I'd have to remember if I step of the bike to capture something.
Yes looking at a drone solution too. I am not a gear head, for me it a tool and I try to get as much out of it as I can but 7, 8 year for a drone is really pushing it.

Yes the caps are great, it took me for every to find them (I bought 3) They are called Snapback that are actually a brand that has blanks then you add your own design on them. I like them also because they are plan with nobody's logo on it.
Planning to head off soon, I can't wait.

The one I have settles on is GaiaGPS. It was the easiest one to add a route and it is simple to select an area so it will work offline. The detail on the make it great too. The app is cheap too and you don't need a monthly subscription.

Hi Joe! Hope you don't mind me asking, what have you swapping out your itech with?
well if you are referring to the white Itech lithium battery from this camping gear video, I didn't actually swap it, I bought a second one, the new Itech lithium battery is black, so I had 2 of them on the bike as I was going to be going to more remote areas and I need it for the filming.
I will do another review when I finish the current trip as I took a Itech solar panel with me and used some different gear, so I'll go over what worked, what didn't work and what I might try on the next trip.

It is an MEC Skully. Not sure if they are around anymore as I think MEC has had some issue since the pandemic, they have cut back on a lot of things.

hi mate, my tent is 8 years old, they have a newer version with a side entry which I think would be a lot better, easier to move in and out and also spin around in the tent. These are super light tents made for thru hiking, but are great for bike camping as they pack small and are light.

Just a heads up regarding the legality of the flick knife you showed in the video. Under Queensland weapons licencing it is a category M weapon and you need a M category licence to own one in Queensland if caught with it expect a court date as police are targeting all knife crimes at the moment. To find out more google knife in public place Qld for the weapons act and Google flick knife qld for definition of cat M weapons.

Thanks for the heads up mate, I'll have to sort out a solution. I spent a lot of time in the remote coast of BC Canada surfing and having a knife like this was invaluable. Have in turn back into the handle means it takes up less space and also it's a safety thing for me so I don't stab myself while rummaging around in my pannier in the dark. But I understand the worst of humanity screw things up for the rest of us.
I gather if I make it a fixed blade it's fine. or if I took off the leaver so I had to open the knife Iike a Swiss army knife by pulling the blade out it is ok also? Well that what I could work out from the link you pointed me to.

@@freewayproject Basically you can have a knife like Croc Dundee as long as it stays in your planners and only comes out when you need to use it at home or campsite or repairing your bike or something along those lines. Basicly if you are in a public place and the knife is within easy reach you are in possession of it. Further to this removing the lever may still not make it legal as you can put it back in similar to removing the bolt from a gun.
With that said I'm now off to watch your first season.
I really appreciate you following up, I'll sort it now and get another camping knife that won't get me in trouble.
Mate just took his Himalayan to Cameron corner and back to sunny coast. His didn't like the sand at all. How did you go ?
I don't have much experience in the sand at all, but what I do know you need to keep the speed up so having less gear on the bike is a big help with less weight and having the skills to ride sand. Maybe the new 450 Himalayan will be better in deep sand when you're riding it for long stretches as it will nearly double the house power.
@@freewayproject we took 12/14 kg off his bike. A passing 4x4 took it to next camp spot. I even rode it. Was so bad in the sand. Even after pressures adjusted a few times
