I grew up listening to him and never considered his music country. Probably because it played on the regular radio station. He was absolutely amazing. Everything he sings is beautiful. Just throw a dart and pick a song. You won’t be disappointed.
@joelliebler5690 no, not country at all. His genre is folk. You can Google and learn that much, but he did have a ton of top ten and #1 hits so he kind of crossed over to pop. I can agree with that 😊
@@lovestreet2675I grew up in that era with my brother having a few Of John’s albums including his best of and he definitely had quite a few country folky songs or just plain country if you know his extensive list of tunes. He also had great folky pop hits as well
@joelliebler5690 not country, but folk influences. Country has a very different sound. You can Google him, he's not country. I grew up with all his albums, memorized them all, and lived in a very 'country' small town, square dancing and all lol. John Denver wasn't country.
Another Aussie here. I must admit, this one makes me nostalgic for a place I’ve never physically been. But, spiritually? I think that’s the connection.
John Denver was a great singer-songwriter & actor. He had so many hits in the 70's-80's. Some of his signature songs were "Annie's Song", "Rocky Mountain High", "Poems, Prayers & Promises", "Calypso", "Thank God I'm A Country Boy", "Sunshine On My Shoulders" etc. John appeared in several films & television specials during the 70's-80's, including the 1977 hit "Oh, God!", in which he starred alongside George Burns. Home Free does an awesome version of "Take Me Home, Country Roads".
Always loved this. Paints such a mental portrait of peace ... in your car, windows down with the noise and cityscape disappearing into the rear view mirror. If you like this, his voice is even more crisp, pure and emotion inspiring in the song to his wife "ANNIES SONG"
John Denver was huge in the 70's. His music was inescapable back then and hearing it today takes me back to being a kid listening to the radio with my parents -- "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Rocky Mountain High", "Sunshine on My Shoulders", "Annie's Song", "Thank God I'm a Country Boy", "Calypso" -- It's easy for me to get nostalgic listening to those songs today. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" comes with the nostalgia baked in. Even when I was a kid I thought the song was already a hundred years old. Denver starred in the 1977 comedy "Oh, God!" as the mild mannered supermarket manager chosen by God, played by George Burns, to spread his message.
Grew up in West Virginia near Wheeling. When this song came out, I was a sophmore in high school. This song was on every radio station that could be picked up. The entire state pride raised to a new level. Tourist flooded the state for years. Eventually became one of the state songs.
Great reaction! Rocky Mountain High is my favorite Denver song. Please react to it!! This was my first taste of John Denver. I was ten years old. I remember my mom coming home and surprised with the 45 record!!
The way he draws out the last word in each line gives me chills. So much emotion and feeling in his voice. Music nowadays is so generic and lacks so much.
Loved that mans music. I can still sit and listen to Winter Skol and Christmas for Cowboys for hours. Oh how I along with millions of others grieved when his plane crashed.
He had so many great songs, and a goofy fun personality to go with them. He was a staple on TV and radio for a long time. "Annie's Song" is a beautiful love song, and "Rocky Mountain High" has been adopted as a state song by Colorado. Both are worth a listen. I call this type of music "Warm bath music", because they make you feel the same way as stepping into a warm bath on a cold night - relaxed and content.
About 1975 I was hitchhiking home after about a year of on the road and a truck driver gave me a ride across the snow covered fields of central Iowa when this song came on the radio, stars and moonlight reflecting on the snow covered fields. That truck driver took me right up to my parents front door just in time for Christmas.
By far my favorite John Denver. Off the top of my head I think this came out in like 1971. I think it was his first big hit and shot to #1 and was all over AM radio. First time I ever heard of him and bought the single. Great lyrics, great backing vocals, great guitar work and nice banjo and steel guitar bits. Yeah, great song. We don't have music like this anymore. Peace, ❤
You reacted exactly like we did, back in the day. I was a kid when this came out and we'd be belting out the chorus so loud, everyone did. It still gives me chills. John Denver was incredibly popular, universally, across genres. Like others mentioned, his music was on regular radio stations so I didn't consider it country.
John Denver is a LEGEND! Two of my favorite songs of his are Leaving on a Jet Plane, especially the the duet of it with Cass Elliot on The Midnight Special?,and his sweetest song is Lady....🎙🎶💕
I've heard it said that it doesn't matter where you're from; when "Country Roads" is playing, you're from West Virginia. The crazy thing is, John Denver wasn't from West Virginia - he was born in New Mexico. If you want something fun, check out his song "Grandma's Feather Bed."
There’s something about John Denver imo. When I was young and punk in the 80’s, Country Roads was still played in the jukebox. We all knew the words. Now it’s such a warm sound to me. Sunny. Like childhood. PS That just made my day.
Maybe the most famous crossover hits ever done. John had so many incredible tunes that would make your heart melt. Rocky Mountain High, Annie’s Song, Calypso, and Looking For Space, just to name a few !
This song reminds me so much of my Dad. He grew up in West Virginia and moved to Ohio later in life. He loved nothing more than returning to visit and show us around the places he grew up.
I'm a transplant I now live in west virginia I'm from Pittsburgh it's true life is older here and slower its relaxing and I really advise people to visit west virginia its a beautiful state
John Denver has a multitude of excellent songs.. "Looking For Space", he does a song, "Fly Away", which also features Olivia Newton-John, and if you want to hear him yodel, try "Calypso", a tribute to the adventurer Jacques Cousteau..
Just took a drive yesterday from our Virginia farm to WVA. Leaves aren't all gone yet. It was sunny and beautiful and this song was the perfect background music for it.
Hauntingly beautiful song. A bit of sadness, missing his home. The next John Denver song you should listen to is "For You." Another song that will touch your heart.
Great reaction. John Denver has always been one of my all time favorite performers. He was my first live concert. I spent maybe about 8 hr's creating a Cassette-Tape with nothing but this song. The reason it took me as long as it did - is because I played and recorded the song back to back so you only heard the song without any of that blank space at the start or end of a song. This was a master piece of recording and editing. At one point I had every single album of his. So many of his songs really hit your Heart-Strings.
Loved your reaction, love John Denver. I just subscribed! All John Denver is awesome, could you react to The 'Eagle and the Hawk?' You would love it...powerful. Also anything from 'An Evening with John Denver' Album! Thank you!! ❤
Some of the most precise strings, harmonies, melodies and vocals ever created. He was a truly incredible Singer/Songwriter. RIP John, so glad to see new folks get on the JD Train.
The south has a strange charm that worms its way into your heart. I spent my early years in Boston but my later years in the south and my family is all from the south.
I'm in a music jam group and we're doing this in front of an audience soon. Myself being one of the main singers 😊. Next, my late Dad's favourites, Sunshine on my shoulders
If you haven’t listened to Annie’s song, I believe that is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Also do a song called. I’m sorry and poems. Prayers and promises is beautiful as well. Great reaction.❤
I think my allergies acting up a little bit when you were talking afterwards, yeah right on man. The song was on the radio constantly when I was little and also it became a Sing-along song it didn't matter what the context was. Everybody knew it and everybody felt emotion when they sang it. I feel so much more investment it now that I'm older and can get all the nuances and the emotion. I didn't really get all that as a kid I just felt so compelling to sing along with. As a musician of many years, I like pretty much everything about this song but I would say still my favorite part about it is the bridge. I could listen to that over and over and over but of course it doesn't work unless you have the whole first part of the song leading up to it and the whole last part of the song following it.
John Denver is a fantastic singer and song writer. He also sounds just as good live as he does on the studio versions. If you enjoy a love song listen to 'For You' from his Wildlife Concert which, although I love 'Annie's song', I think is better. He was an environmentalist before most people knew what that was. He died far too young and the world lost a great talent.
Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert are the co writers and background singers on the album. They presented a partially written song about West Virginia to John Denver and asked for his help on more verses, a chorus and the music so they could sell the song to a country artist. John Denver was so impressed with the idea that he helped complete the song and included it on his Poems, Prayers and Promises album. Although the song is about West Virginia it has as an emotional connection to anyone that has a special place called "home".
I grew up listening to him and never considered his music country. Probably because it played on the regular radio station. He was absolutely amazing. Everything he sings is beautiful. Just throw a dart and pick a song. You won’t be disappointed.
Agree! I thought of him as more folk or bluegrass, not country. He definitely brought people together. I had his poster up in my locker ❤️
More of a crossover pop star with country influences!
@joelliebler5690 no, not country at all. His genre is folk. You can Google and learn that much, but he did have a ton of top ten and #1 hits so he kind of crossed over to pop. I can agree with that 😊

I'm an Aussie 🇦🇺, I and most people I know, know all the lyrics to this beautiful song 🎵
This song reminds me of the Ozarks. Thank God I'm Home. 1 Amendment 2 Amendment 🇺🇸. Adios from the Ozarks

"Annie's Song" 👍
If you like this one you should listen to John Denver’s “Rocky Mountain High”. The lyrics are incredibly beautiful.
Shout out to Taffy Nivert who co-wrote it and is the beautiful backing vocal.
Didn't Taffy Nivert co-wrote this with her husband Bill Danoff as well?
@@samkeepintherockalive yes. Good story of how it all came together.
Ain’t nothing better than singing this song with 60,000 Mountaineers after a West Virginia University football win on a crisp autumn afternoon!
"Annies Song" is a beauty.

Pure human emotion set to music.
John Denver's music is so peaceful and relaxing. Check out Rocky Mountain High or Sunshine On My Shoulders next

It gives you a comforting feeling of memory, family and friends!
