  • Fred Astaire's solo, and the first true dance number of the movie, in Top Hat. As he goes into a fit of dancing to "No Strings" and gleeful at his single and carefree life, he unwittingly wakes up Ginger Rogers in the room below.

    I love this routine, and the "sandman" soft-shoe scene that follows.
    Almost all of Astaire's routines with Ginger had to be looped in order to pick up the sound of their taps clearly. The only exception was in "Roberta," where they danced on a wooden floor, and were utterly delighted to do so.
    Funny thing, though: this particular scene sounds very distinctly as though Fred's dancing on Linoleum. I can't help wondering if that is indeed the case.

    • @muzafferelbeyli2756

      How can you get from the sound on which material he dances on?

    • @TheVetusMores
      @TheVetusMores 3 года назад

      @@muzafferelbeyli2756 Because the house I grew up in had a Linoleum kitchen floor. Haven't you ever walked across Linoleum in hard-soled shoes? It has a very distinctive sound. Not sure quite how to describe it other than to say that it sounds kind of "plasticky".
      This of course is not to say that the scene in question _was_ done on Linoleum, only that it sounds as though it was.

    In Japan, now this program played by Masayuki Sakamoto (as Jerry traverse) and he commented about this; the center balance of Astaire's tap dance is not low, but the upper body and that's why his dance performance looks light. Though the remake Japanese one has some difference in terms of words or music that is used in a play, it is very exciting and fascinating. Hope it will be played again and seen by as many people.
    Btw, Masayuki Sakamoto played Tarzan in the Disney movie Tarzan (Japanese edition) and Phil Collins, the original singer of Tarzan said that Mersa Sakamoto (his artist's name) is the best singer in Tarzan movie in other countries. so then, Sakamoto won that award and received the shield by Phil.
    I really love Mersa and i wanna tell his charm to many people:)))

    Fred was seldom seen smoking (as opposed to smokin' hot) but he indulged in private until the 1950s. He was hardly ever shown eating or drinking on camera either. Hermes Pan said he had firm ideas of what was 'classy'.
    He lived off a boiled egg for breakfast, cup of soup at lunch and a light dinner. Five feet nine, 110 pounds- no wonder he was often compared with a strand of spaghetti or stringbean, and was never photographed with his clothes off.

      +Psalms817 Often times I agree with you, but the Astaire movies, and other early musicals, are different. They seem to know how ridiculous it is to break out into song and still do it anyway. The whole of the movie revolves around how absurd their reality is and they play it up to the nth degree. It's so honest that I can't help but find it very endearing.
