We used to sing this song as kids in school. This is a beautiful rendition by Sinéad. It's hard to believe she's no longer with us. May the memory of her and her sublime voice live for eternity. Rest in peace Sinéad.
Slan Sinead. Peace, beautiful soul . Remarkable Woman. Thank you for singing truth to power for all your life. Our lives are richer, and our burdens lighter for it. You were always my 'pope'. 'For Love is Lord of All'.

I love this song in Spain we have one similar song talking about one boat which can not surf but like all Spanish songs it has a happy ending it doesn't matter I prefer this versión
@@Cyclops-ky9pr Yes, of course. The person said, "keeping to our culture." To me, that largely implies exclusivity. Obviously Sinéad/Shuhada is very Irish in many ways (this amazing Sean-Nós Nua album being one of course) and that is great. At the same time she is very well known for a lifetime of participating in and appreciating many other cultures (including living outside of Ireland for most of her adult life I believe). For that reason I would not describe her life as "keeping to" Irish culture.
Trying to find out which "melody" came first in the "trading of tunes with the continent". Compare this melody (being only slightly slower in Sinead's style) to the French Christmas Carol of the 17th century called "Bring A Torch, Jeanette, Isabella" - here is one example ruclips.net/video/OVLYYYOtuW0/видео.html - Anybody know the date origin of this song here, Báidín Fheilimí ?????

The little boat of Feilim (an early Irish Saint). The first two or three verses talk about the boat going to different island in Ireland's northwest. The last verse sings that the boat was broken (briseadh) on the rocks of the last island.
The lives of Erin are not in question...but the idea of 1 human pope...over 1 human woman...sip it,...or your gonna choke...turn around..her she comes...
+Marino Polo Rivas The Irish phonetic system is quite a bit different from the phonetic systems of other languages. We don't use j, k, q, v, w, x, y, or z, so obviously our alphabet is shorter than most. We use a system where putting two consonants together to make different sounds. For example: bh = v or dh = gh (This sound is made while trying to say a G and gargling at the same time.) like the German gh sound. It is a bit complicated but Irish was a spoken language rather than a written one. (I think we made it complicated to confuse the English) ;-)
Originally Irish had more grammar than other languages. Consonants could have dots over them, from one up to three making a pyramid. This changed the position of the consonant, for example B could go up to an m sound or a v sound. Irish monks introduced some of this to the English language. When type writers came around there was no way to do this writing so a letter was used to mark where the dots would be, this letter was h. Bhan, should be B with a dot over the b, and then "an", and its Van. The H is simply an accent marker. This can be highly confusing, as this was never properly explained to me as a child and I struggled with it until it was plainly explained to me as an adult. When you take this rule in mind, the pronunciation is perfectly standard. That does not mean you will find the language easy, it has a whole host of unique qualities, for example it is one a few languages on the whole planet that uses the word order it uses etc.
