What a beautifully played transcription of the Toccata. Sounds as if it was an original work for marimba. The tempos and phrasings are perfectly balanced. Anders Elten is an extraordinary musician. He seems completely to have transcended the technical difficulties connected with playing Bach on a marimba (only 4 mallets compared with the pianists 10 fingers), and he is able to shape the music in a way that can compete with the best recordings by pianists.
Ilove thiS!!!! Bach on marimba is why I wanted to learn the instrument in the first place! Thank you for your lovely and intimate interpretation of this piece. You have an understanding of the energy between notes unlike many others. I deeply appreciate your dedication to the subtle nuances in execution of your concepts...very inspiring for the rest of us!
Quelle merveille ! Johann Sebastian Bach, père spirituel de tous les musiciens, serait fier de vous ! Dans l'imposante fugue centrale, vous restituez le contrepoint des 3 voix à merveille. Vraiment, merci !
Beautifully played/transcribed. One of the best interpretations I’ve heard, not just for a transcription, but overall. The septuplets in particular have a great feel to them, very even yet organic
Gorgeous performance, the polyphony in fugue sounds so transparent, it’s mesmerizing even with limited dynamic. Is it possible to get the whole partita? Thank you for uploading, it is the best one and I know almost every famous version.
this is magic... brings about strong feelings. Ethereal performance... Bach's music always seems to be adding up and piling up till it all just collapses and then the cycle repeats... Amazing performance... It's scary how your interpretation is so good! Absolute genius! Those low notes sound like out of this world on the marimba... WOWW
Je ne peux pas faire mieux qu'approuver ce commentaire sans réserve ! Superbes phrasés et nuances, quelle musicalité et quelle maîtrise technique ! Bravo.
I cannot imagine how difficult it is to play this on Marimba, and you did it so well! This is one of my favourite renditions of the piece. Thank you for uploading this!
A few months ago I searched for bach played on marimba but I didn't find much I like. But today youtube algorithm somehow worked and I am finally listening to this! Thanks for this video! This is so good.
Hi, thanks for your interesting remark! The simple answer is taste. A more elaborate answer would involve diving into the works of C.P.E Bach and his contemporaries, where it is mentioned that harmonic tension/dissonances should be paired with louder dynamics, whereas consonances generally take the softer dynamics. Of course such a rule is destined to be broken - but it is a rather interesting principle to work with (light/dark), especially on an instrument like the marimba where we have quite limited means of articulation.

The voicings you interpreted to this arrangement are simply "right". Well done.
I can’t put into words how happy this makes me
WHY?? SOUNDS SO SAD THIS PIECE
Sounds so ethereal on the marimba. Maestro Bach would be proud.
My oh my. This is just sublime. Your love for Bach comes through completely. Really enjoyed it!
I feel sorry for the billions of people before my time who did not have access to such fine music.
This is a full on performance, not only very musically but you are even « in » the music. ❤

Amazing how gently those notes are tapped out of the wood. And you can let it sound as if Bach wrote that piece for marimba, great.

Thanks for your kind words!

@@anderseltenmarimba Thanks so much for your detailed response. Definitely fitting for marimba.
Can you play the piano as well as the marimba?
I only learned piano for a brief period of time, so unfortunately not!
