    We get red earth ‘pebbles’ down at the beach. I have often wondered if they can be used in my textile playtime, so thank you very much for this video.

    I really love working with soy milk and very much enjoyed this video. I did not realise you could use earth pigments to paint fabric! I have some blue powder from Morocco and believe this is not Indigo powder but some stone. Therefore I shall try your method to use it as a paint! Thank you for this video.

      How wonderful you found us at Color Quest, Andrea 💙 Soy milk has so many amazing applications in natural dyeing. Your blue pigment sounds super cool, so enjoy working with it this way. I was gifted some Mayan Blue while traveling in Mexico last year, so may use some with this technique too.

      @Margaret Byrd: Color Quest have you tried botanical... um stamping/printing?
      I have all the dyes left over that has settled to the bottom, and I was thinking maybe those are the pigments I could mix up with soy milk and try

    • @MargaretByrdColorQuest
      @MargaretByrdColorQuest  Год назад +1

      @@jessicabey275 You can definitely use dye matter in a reduced form and add a thickener like guar gum or gum tragacanth to print/stamp on fiber. If you wanted to turn your old dyes into pigments, you can strain it through a coffee filter and let the residual dye matter dry out to a powder substance on the filter. This is called a lake pigment and is a way to turn botanicals into pigments. You could then add them to soy milk and try printing as well 😊

    Love this tutorial, thank you for this and all your videos, I’m learning so much!
    One question, could you freeze the paint in between sessions? Would the soy keep longer if frozen?

    • @MargaretByrdColorQuest
      @MargaretByrdColorQuest  Год назад +2

      So lovely to hear that you are enjoying the videos, Maggie 🌼 Great question, and although I've never tried it, why not test it out? I've read you can freeze soy milk, so I would assume this could also work with the pigment inside. Definitely worth experimenting 😉

    Thanks for the video!
    The fabric I’m using still has quite a bit of wrinkles after ironing (pre-painting stage). Usually I use damp towel between the iron and the fabric to get wrinkles out, but I’m nervous that would end up absorbing the soy from the fabric. What would you recommend? & can the finished fabrics handle moisture when ironing?

    • @MargaretByrdColorQuest
      @MargaretByrdColorQuest  9 месяцев назад +1

      You are most welcome, Mackenzie 🌼 Wrinkles can be tough to get out, especially on cotton, but don't worry about using a damp towel or steam on the fiber. The soy milk adheres to the fiber quite well which is what makes it a great mordant alternative for many processes including full dye immersion which obviously is wet 😊. If you are nervous, you can let it cure for a longer period of time (1+ week), but you should have no problem at all.

    Hi Margaret thank you for sharing this, amazing! wanted to ask you if this can be used to make artworks for outside, is it water resistant?

    • @MargaretByrdColorQuest
      @MargaretByrdColorQuest  Год назад

      You are most welcome, Evgenia! Earth pigments in this application are wash-fast after they have time to cure on the fiber. The soy milk also helps with the bond. I've never tested leaving a painted surface outside to be exposed to the elements, so hard to say how long it would last. But remember, earth pigments have a long history as an ancient paint that has withstood the test of time across many artifacts and wall murals across the globe. Why not see what happens 😉

      @@MargaretByrdColorQuest hi so i tried writing with soy based paints on soy treated fabric... washes out straight away... maybe the fabric does need to sit for a few months as they say...

    • @MargaretByrdColorQuest
      @MargaretByrdColorQuest  Год назад

      @@EvgeniaEmets Thanks for sharing your results about not waiting for the paint to cure. Although I'm not sure you need to wait that long for the fiber itself to cure with the pre-treatment of soy milk, I absolutely would let the soy milk paint have a few weeks to cure on the fiber after painting it and before washing it. Hope you get to try it again soon!

      Totally valid question 😊 I have used soy milk as a binder for years on fiber and haver never had it smell bad. There is a specific odor that lingers, but it more of a subtle earthy smell. My son doesn't like it, but I don't mind 🤎
