For this to happen, the lack of care is insane, are the councils just taking the money and pocketing it or are they legit just fixing potholes???? If I were a councilman or an MP, I’d really consider the longevity of your own lives because incidents like this will kill people… and we know you guys aren’t paying for maintenance.

I've heard this canal or at least section of canal is owned by Peel Holdings

It's nothing to do with the council you plum. It used to be properly funded by central government, but the Tories transferred the majority of the assets and liabilities to the Canals and Rivers trust in 2012. They get a grant from government but the value of that has decreased in real terms so it is funded by selling off its assets slowly...

DOH . the canal and rivers trust, its a charity NOTHING to do with council , a culverted stream failed and washed away the canal bed, more to do with global warming and torrential rain than any council

It appears from looking at maps and the video the culverted stream that ran under the canal may have failed which undermined the canal bed breaking the clay seal, allowing water to flow out resulting in a catastrophic failure of the earth embankment through washout, is my guess. Constructed 260 years go like much of the canal network maintaining the canal itself is only part of the system that needs to be maintained.

I also took a look at Google maps and it appears the river Bollin is slightly north of the collapsed canal. The river runs on the Northside of what looks like a sewage treatment plant. I hope it gets the funding required for a timely repair.

Very expensive for peel holdings and for the canal boat people who's mooring fees will probably sky rocket 🚀

That canal failed due woeful maintenance. Doesn’t take an engineer to work it out either.
