@Hamid Hussein .The Taliban would still have suffered enormously had it not been Pakistani tribesmen sheltering them inside Pakistan. The answer to both the USSR and Nato forces dealing a decisive blow to the Taliban lay in sealing the Pakistani Border with large numbers of Troops.
Like the Soviet Military leadership would later say, they should have deployed at least 330,000 troops to the Pakistani border to effectively seal off infiltration Taliban supply routes.

Wow.. Sergei, being only a pilot, after being shot down successfully held off an entire band of mujahideen fighters for over an hour with a SMG and some hand grenades until a rescue squad flew in to get him out of there. I understand the magnitude of a country like the USSR having to bail on the conflict and how it subsequently wounded the pride of that nation, but they seem to treat it as if they lost a conventional war to a much smaller and less capable country. Bad things happened, but the Soviets could have leveled Afghanistan, but that wasn’t what they were there to do. I don’t understand why the government rather chose to forget about its involvement there. Stories like Sergei’s are phenomenal and deserve to be told. He could have thrown his hands up and accepted his fate, but he decided to out fighting. That’s a warrior.

As sad and tragic as what has been happening due to the fatally flawed peace/withdrawal agreement; my thoughts are that the Coalition enabled many positive and hopefully permanent improvements in regards to the drastically improved infrastructure, the newfound educational system which has made education for girls/women compulsory, and furthermore, the improving housing situation which positively benefited citizens in both urban and rural areas. It also has to be said that there is still a long way to go in order to make sure that the many positive projects we started are followed through to their successful completion. The Afghan economy has been modernised and diversified to include mining, some light and heavy industry, improved agriculture, and a fledgling services sector. Due to the thurough modernization of Afghanistan it's a vastly different situation than that of the rundown, dysfunctional 'emirate' in which fear and intimidation were used to rule over all levels of society. Another way I believe that was an improvement over the heavy-handed way the Soviets tried to impose their Communist government was the inclusion of moderate Islam in the governing of the country, helping people to see that modernization is a positive way to improve the average Afghan citizen's life without having to lose their culture unlike the Soviet way which attempted to eradicate religion with militant atheism that angered and alienated a large part of Afghan society.

@@BolshevikCarpetbagger1917 You're repeating Soviet agitprop. We heard a lot of it in the US by women's groups who were fellow travelers.
Most of them could not have lasted a week as cadres. The first mass reprisal would have them screaming. The Soviets were extremely violent to suspect villages.
One advisor said, after burying the bodies of the male inhabitants of the village, "Next year you will have a good potato crop".
Afghanistan after the end of Soviet occupation allowed for women's education. They associated all rebels with Taliban like restrictions.
In contrast the Soviets worked tirelessly to destroy Islamic influence. Young people were taken to the USSR to be corrupted with alcohol, premarital sex and smoking.
They returned as True Believers in socialism, dialectical materialism and being very disrespectful to their Klan elders. This last one was a Deal Breaker in Pashtun society, and probably for Tadzhiks and others as well.
The Afghans are intensely family oriented, in this they emulate the Chechens. Russia and allied nations keep trying to "secularize" people who are content as they are.
Afghan rebel Achmed Shah Massoud was hardly an Islamist. He didn't get along with the Taliban. He kept them out of the Panshir Valley. He was much more moderate than they.
Two Taliban suicide bombers murdered him on Sept 10 2001.

First when the Mujahideen invaded a village, and shot at Soviet soldiers after butchering any educator that may have been present, ridding the village of these jihadist savages was a very justifiable response.
Yes, you're right. Women still continued to go to school, work, and walk in miniskirts without the burqa after the Soviet withdrawal. Rights that they lost in 1992 when the Mujahideen took over Afghanistan. Secular education, women not treated as cattle, smoking, drinking alcohol, and premarital sex, such horrible offenses! Right? All the things Afghans expose themselves to when they move to North America and Western Europe.
Ahmad Shah Massoud was a member of Jamiate-e Islami, an organization notorious for throwing acid in the faces of uncovered women. He was butcher and indeed an Islamist, whose crimes were well-documented by RAWA (an organization I don't particularly like) and featured in the documentary Afghan Women: A History of Struggle which you may find here on RUclips. Including Massoud's butchery of mover 700 Pashtun and Hazara civilians in Kabul 1992. A "moderate" who admired the Ayatollah Khomeini.
When Afghans stop being a major portion of the migrants and refugees fleeing their homeland, maybe I'll give some credibility to your notion of them being content.
