Great stuff as always. I play with a 9 handicap player. He hits the ball very straight => stays out of trouble. But the rare times he gets in trouble, he always "takes his medicine" and makes sure he gets his ball back in play for the next shot.
@@daniellamb7828 I recently got a $20 4hybrid off ebay and it goes exactly 150 yards pretty straight so those par 3s where i normally end up in sand or deep rough i was able to get on the green or the fringe. I have a weak hit but its a matter of playing my shot like master playa teaches
I am close to a 9. my index is 10.3. I appreciate your advice and videos. When I look at my game, I think my issue is i have that one blow up hole that comes out of no where. Usually once I come off the tee well I score well. But at least I am working on my game and focusing on what I do not do well, so I can be more consistant.
I really enjoy your videos. I am an older high handicap golfer and I want to improve my game by making decisions. This video and the channel really helps.
Spot on, Matty! I play off ~8-10 and when I turn off the ego and play to my index, the biggest key for me is “only play shots you know and play TO shots you know.” The more comfortable stock shots you have under 120 yards, the better you can score!
As a short hitting Handicap 9.6er who plays Srixon Soft Feel, I can attest to everything Matt says here (mostly because I was a 13 before learning from the Playa what to do!). One point of emphasis from his other videos- play from the correct tee boxes!!!
Dear PIC (Playa in Chief), I've been struggling with leaving pitch marks on the greens. I tend to aim straight for the cup, but will occasionally mis-hit & leave pitch marks 4-5' away from the hole. The Way of The Playa has confused me because now I have to leave my pitch-marks in Texas & don't want to disrespect the greenskeeper like that. Thanks again for another banger of a video. Keep on crushing boyfriend.
Another great video! I watch your videos over and over to hammer in the Wadda Playa mindset. Seriously, your approach and philosophy has evolved my game. Shaved 8 strokes last season, and my goal is to shave another 5 to get to a low double digit. Positive mindset!
My home course's third hole has a bunker in the middle of the green. Like totally surrounded by green. I always aim for it, because that is a sure way not to hit it. Have to chip over it sometimes
I had never broken 80 until last year but now I do almost every round at my home course. 9 index here (the naturally long hitter that struggles with control off the tee) Can confirm - #8 might be the most important, and #10 is right up there. The biggest struggle I have with improving is reminding myself to play within my abilities.
I started doing that with my 4i. (195) If the hole is 200+ I just focus on getting on the approach and go from there. Better to pitch/chip from there than t y to get out of a bunker any day
Yep. Play with an older guy in league. We nick-named him "Iceman" because thats how he plays, ice cold. Straight, in play, hits every fairway, gets atleast close to the green if not on it. I watched him shoot a 72. I adopted that style and shot an 88.

Hi Matt, the condition of the green at this course looks great. What is the name of these golf courses you play at? I know you play in Thailand but are these golf courses in the Chiang Mai area?
Tempo is the biggest downfall to most amateurs in my opinion. Everyone is trying to crush the ball when really they just need to be swinging at 70-80% power and letting the club do the work. I find when I feel like I’m swinging my driver 80% it goes 270 and when I swing 100% it maybe goes 280 but I miss the center a lot more. It’s not worth a few extra yards.
The best thing you can do to drive these principles home is to go find the day all the old guys play at your course (100% there is a day at every course on this earth), and join as a single. Watch as you get beat by 20 shots by guys who hit it 190 off the tee but have 9 or 10 up and downs a round.
@MonsterERB One old dude told me one time, "never forget that the object of golf is to get the ball in the hole." Pretty similar advice to the PIC. That's what I tell guys who I get paired with that are struggling (you know the ones...downward spiral of bad shots->embarassment->worse shots). Just swing your swing and keep the object of the game in mind.
I have a knee injury and cannot swing full. Played last week on a new and challenging course where I only hit driver 2x (one in a hazard) and basically used these principles more than ever. Two par 5s I hit the ball to 100 yards when I was only 230-ish out (normally would hit hybrid at the green) and made par. 79 with 2 penalty strokes… probably one of the least stressful rounds of my life.
Went to play on a quite horrible course in Sattahip,Chonburi yesterday. I’ve played on this course since I was 12 yrs old(turning 25 this year). It was my first time for me to play conservative style after watching your video. Only hitting 6 Iron off the tee as it is my confidential club and I can only tell you this but usually I would shoot 95-100 and lost around 10+ balls every time I go there despite all the experience I have with the course. But yesterday was different due to fact that I only play to keep it safe and have it in play for the next shot. Shot 89 and lost 4 balls. I still absolutely hate that course but it’s the closest one and cheapest to my house.

Hey Matty, I had been following your many helpful and interesting videos. With due respect, there is one suggestion. I think when u use .word confidentiality, u actually meant confidence or confident, probably a misguided language teacher fault. Keep u your good work buddy.
If someone doesn't have a shot shape, what should they do? When I hit a ball well it goes straight. I don't have a slight fade or draw. I do have a tendency to slice extremely hard right though on bad hits. Like absolute banana slices.
@@GolfSidekick I'll give that a go next round. Think the next thing on my list is finding my 100 yard swing. I'm confident from 120 and fairly confident from 40 and under. But as soon as I'm in that deadzone and I'm not in a position to bump and run, I'll add 2-3 strokes to the hole.
