    I'm always amused by historical reference humor. Eleanor of Aquitaine really did love Richard best.
    Oh Brian Bedford. If only you had been there to see Nick Wilde. He might as well have been Nicholas of Loxley. I still think he's the time-lost son of Robin and Marian.

    I remember liking this movie as a kid. Even then I didn't like that king Richard returned and punished his brother off-screen.
    I get it: the deleted ending showed his return, but was edited out probably because it seemed too convenient that the king returned from the crusades the very moment prince John was about to stab Robin. However, it's better to have a contrived coincidence than to have an off-screen ending.

    I believe another reason why the re-use of animation in some scenes (especially in the "Phony King of England" scene) is due to the film having a lower budget than normal (approx $1.5 million USD). Animated pictures cost a lot more to make than live-action, even back in 1973, and one way to save on cash is to re-use animations not just within the film (and from what I remember, that was a rare occurrence), but from previous films as well. In this case, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), The Jungle Book (1967), and The Aristocats (1970).
    Even with this in account, they did manage to put out a rather imaginative product with what they could do, and I won't lie when I say it's my personal favorite Disney film.

    Characters in Reynard and their Robin Hood counterparts:
    Reynard = Robin Hood
    Hermeline (Reynard's also-a-fox wife, with whom he has three sons) = Maid Marian
    King Nobel = Prince John
    Isengrim (Reynard's wolf uncle) = Sheriff of Nottingham
    Moufflard = Trigger and Nutsy
    Chanticleer = Alan a Dale
    Bruin (one of Reynard's enemies, ironically) = Little John
    Grimbert (Reynard's badger nephew) = Friar Tuck
    Other characters in Reynard without counterparts in Disney's Robin Hood include Tybalt the cat (whom the Romeo and Juliet character named Tybalt was named after), Courtoys the dog, the king's secretary Baldwin the donkey, Isengrim's wife Hirsent, who was raped by Reynard, Reynard's ape uncle Martin, whose son Moneke is thought to be where the word monkey comes from, Cuwart the hare, whom Reynard murders after "reading the credo" with him, and Belyn the ram.

    Now wait just a sec...just because Robin says they were "kids" together doesn't mean they were children. He could just mean they were teenagers. When you are 16 or 18, you may feel grown up, but by the time you are in your mid-twenties, you see yourself differently and may say "I was still just a kid back then." There's no need to take Robin and Marian so literally.
    Also, the animators didn't re-paint existing cels for any reason other than cost-cutting. After Walt's death, there was a lot of upheaval in the management structure for several years, and hand-drawn animation was always expensive because it was time-consuming. If you can traces and repaint existing bits of animation, it saves DAYS on production and tons of money. That entire decade was one of uncertain futures for the animation department, and The Black Cauldron was really the final nail in the coffin. By the time Eisner came and restructured everything, he was convinced no one wanted animated movies anymore and decided they were too expensive to produce, which is why there was so little animation out of Disney from Cauldron to The Little Mermaid (which kicked off the animation renaissance era)

    Personally I think the complaint about reused footage (which is more like reused rotoscope sources since everyone is redrawn) is extremely overblown. This was before the days of TV reruns, home video, and streaming so nobody could watch these things whenever they wanted. Plus all of the time take to record this footage, which wasn't as easy to put together as it is in the digital age, meant a lot of money and effort was put into it. They're supposed to put that much work into creating an asset and then toss it out when it can be used again? It's not like people don't do the same dance over and over in real life.

    You know what I find interesting the plot about a younger lion brother jealous of his older brother's success and kingly Statius would be reused in the lion king, only big difference is that while Prince John is a spoiled crybaby man child with mommy issues and is comedic villain that is played for laughs, while Scar on the other hand is a sadistic cold heartless bastard who we can't wait to see him getting his just desserts especially since unlike John he literally had the balls to kill his own brother so he can take the title as king.

  • @carlossoto1715
    @carlossoto1715 3 года назад +1

    I will agree that this film needed that alternate ending to the climax to make it near flawless, since excluding Maid Marian from it and not having Prince John do anything to put up a fight, in addition to leaving Richard's relationship with John ambiguous given he doesn't appear until the end, meant it felt incomplete. Light hearted fits Disney's profile, and quite frankly when I saw the sketches for that alternate scene it didn't look too dark, I mean Walt was already dead before this film entered production so who's counting? All and all, it is outright fun, and in a way I kind of see Robin and Marian's relationship somewhat paralleling how my relationship with this friend of mine could turn out.

    FINALLY MY CHILDHOOD INTRODUCTION TO FURRYS

  • @DowntownWithBrown
    @DowntownWithBrown 5 лет назад +1

    I like to think this is a parody of Robin Hood furries put on in 1973 to "emulate" 1194. That would explain why a lot of the stuff not invented yet (farthings, Happy Birthday, balloons) would be in there. Then after their sole performance of it, they gave the reins to Disney to animate it and thus release it in theaters. With the alternate ending in place of its anti-climactic normal ending, I'd probably call this movie my guiltiest Disney pleasure.

    No. No. I love you, Hunter, but you cannot disrespect Princess Aurora. :P not the girl Walt and Mary Costa put years of work into creating. She does have a personality that's clear to people who actually watch the movie and aren't just saying it because it's hip to say so. More than Marian too, since Aurora shows a wider range of emotions and more layered traits like being flirty, sly, and intuitive. But Marian is good. Why do people always need to insult female character to uplift another? She's got nothing to do with RH.
