It always amazes me how smoothly Glenn switches from singing effortlessly to his turbo voice ( as he calls it) to high screams - and back. This guy is 68 and still performs like that, simultaniously playing bass. Can't wait to see him in a couple of weeks here in Germany.
I've been listening to Deep Purple since I was a teen. But only heard Mistreated in the last couple of years. No idea how I'd missed it do long. This live performance of Mistreated is phenomenal!
Right. Saw him a year ago in Moscow. He’s a monster singer in his late 60-s! He’s the only one of all the Purple vocalists who saved the voice. Incredible vocal improvisation cause he mixes so many styles, funk, soul, hard rock

Hughes and Coverdale, of similar age, are two of my favourite voices in rock over the years. While Coverdale lived a relatively healthy life with smoking as his only vice, Glenn Hughes spent decades doing hard drugs and derailing his once blossoming career. Yet, it was Coverdale who lost his voice when he entered his 50s, while Hughes seems unaffected by his formerly destructive lifestyle. He must have unbelievable genes.
Glenn voice is higher and isnt as Heavy and growly and physical than David . Also though Glenn is the exception , Glenn didnt sang and scream Heavy metal related Stuff on exhausting tours as David did in 80's . Plus David went constantly a bit over high in the " geffen " era .
I would say Coverdale lost his voice much earlier .. than his 50's . In his 40's it seemed to go downhill very fast . If you watch him from 1994 and on it was just gone . Glenn on the other hand is just rare and amazing .. he is the only guy from the Deep Purple lineup who could still hit those notes ! in their later years .
Coverdale was more of a natural baritone than Hughes, David tried harder to get to the high range putting strain to his cords. That's the issue. Overall I like to listen to Coverdale more.
1 little story to tell, I happened to meet Claude Schnell at Musicians Institute, (Dio’s Keyboard player in records like “last in line” and he also happened to be one of Glenn’s solo career Keyboard players, and he once told me that Dio’s favorite singer (if not one of them) happened to be Glenn Hughes, he also was a good friend of his.
That's an awesome story, Gaston! It's cool to know who Dio's favorite was, and that it was Glenn. They were in a tight circle of musical friends. Keep rockin', my friend, and thanks for your comment.
Ken, it was Blackmore’s Guitar that drew everybody into Deep Purple. When he started the intro to Mistreated it sent chills up my spine. That Coverdale comes in with such soul only puts icing on the cake.
Absolutely. Still top notch! I always wonder how Glenn keeps his incredible voice in shape while great singers like Don Dokken, Sammy Hagar, David Coverdale are getting worse with age. Is it practice? Or genes? Or did they waste their voices in exhausting them too much? Always wonder..anyone knows? (I'm a guitarist, not a vocalist..) Btw, Ken Tamplin, you are an incredible vocalist as well!
@@PeterPotensMusic I think that out of the three Gagar still sounds pretty good. Not one of my favourite singers (often down to the songs rather than his performance) but he is consistent and can still do the Van Hagar songs justice.

Halfway through the show he gave me a shout out and told the whole crowd that I hadn't been able to see him at Steelhouse festival because of my leg and how I was so happy to get to see him finally. I might have cried a little.

First off let me say I’ve been a Purple fan for decades and BURN is one of my favorite albums. Glenn’s performance here is stellar!! There are moments where he sounds spot on to the studio recording of the song. And his runs are amazing!! David Coverdale, unfortunately is a shell of his former self. This California Jam performance was, in my opinion, very good. I was lucky enough to see Coverdale with the Deep Purple version of Whitesnake (Lord and Paice) and he sounded amazing. A few years ago I saw the revamped version of Whitesnake and sadly his voice was shot. Thanks for the reaction video!! And for the record, you would have been a good fit for Blackmores Rainbow!!
Glenn Hughes incredible voice and then there is Glenn playing bass and holding down the parts he had in Burn with Deep Purple. I saw a recent recording of Hughes and Coverdale redoing Burn and those two seem to only get better with age and experience . Remember at Cal Jam both Coverdale and Hughes were a mere 22 years old each !!! At 67 years of age they are still very much great singers . Thanks for yet another great Video Ken
This was from a Swedish music show called Rhapsody in Rock who usually touring all over Sweden summer time. This specific show was a special one since it's shot at the Royal Albert Hall in London with Glenn as a special guest. The leader/musical director/creator of this concept is the guy at the grand piano.
I had the chance of seeing Glenn sing mistreated with Kings of chaos. It blew my fucking mind. It's probably the greatest display of vocals I've ever heard. I'm sure I skipped some notes only dogs can hear. God bless Mr. Glenn, love him, and you said it, there's only one!!! The voice of rock! 🤟

Cool. In 110% agreement with you on Glenn. He's amazing to hear & see especially live! He's got more energy as a singer & bassist than most musicians half his age. Love both Burn & Mistreated. Tommy Bolin also had a distinctive voice.
Coverdale's range increased over time I'm sure with proper training. His voice in the 80s was hard to beat...I feel the same about Paul Stanley...I feel they peaked in their mid to late 30s
Hughes is amazing. After living 25 years under cocaine, he reborn like a phoenix. I saw him sing live in Brazil last decade, in 2006 or 2007. Spectacular show, fantastic.
Thank you so much for doing a reaction video to Glenn Hughes! No one bothers with him and I have left requests to others and no interest. Jorn Lande, D.C. Cooper and Tony Harnell are others that are so good.
Hughes is fantastic! Coverdale here was a beginner. He was "streching" his vocal too much here. Anyway after Deep Purple, Coverdale improved tremendously his technique. In first Whitesnake albums the sound was still distorted but more relaxed even at high notes (he managed the falsetto and volume control with the mic to protect the voice)
Your slogan is absolutely honest and true: "where the proof is in the singing" And i am not licking anyone's boots but recognizing honesty. I'm not as good as I use to be (years of smoking but I haven't smoked in ten months. Yay me😁), but with not smoking, I improve daily. I thank you for your videos. They really do help.
DAMN! I REALLY LOVE SINGING! Hahahaha great video Ken, always supporting from Guatemala! Deep Purple has a great energy. I've always wanted to sing Burn, but I still need some practice to work on my head voice. I'd like to see them live they sound like gods!
When Glenn says "Liar" it sounds funny cause he just says it not sing it. This man got it all. Great vibrato, tone, small man ha ha. Have to like it. Now I know too you don't have to be bodybuilder to sing great...and with powerful voice.
Glenn still killing it at his age too. There is young vocalist that can't touch him. David Coverdale is awesome too. Whitesnake is one of the first bands that got me in to this kind of music.
Great version of this song, and I had no idea how talented Glenn Hughes is. I always thought Ian Gillan was amazing, but this adds a new dimension to my appreciation of the band. Speaking of which, is this Deep Purple, because I don't see anybody like Steve Morse or the other cats in this video? Awesome rendition either way!
When I hear Glenn another vocalist comes to mind... Graham Bonnet. How about reacting to Alcatrazz "Jet to Jet"... Vai version of course. Love Yngwie, but the stage is too small for his ego. Anyway, GB just made me look at vocals way differently. I think its time to analyze the man they call Graham....Once again.. Love what you do Ken. Godspeed Brother..
I agree on the absence of soulful singers. I look to preserve, promote and support singers that sing from the soul, that old school Bluesy heart & soul passion and emotion. Love the way you elongate & carry those notes that David didn't ..very nice! You inspire me Ken, hope someday to meet you and sit and learn in person from you! Long Live Rock n'Roll! Keep Rock Alive!!
I remember watching this on ABC and was blown away I remember watching this I was 12 and I thought this doesn't sound like Smoke On The Water guy lol just not known there was different incarnations of singers at that time of Purple then started to research who this guy was, which before technology took some time, I enjoy your stuff very much Ken! No autotune straight from the pipes!
Deep Purple ,Rainbow , Whitesnake were my "religion" when it came to music in my youth till mid 20s. Knew every word, Chord and solo. Still Love this. Mistreated my "Blues Song" But Damn Ken ,You Do a damn 1st Class job yourself.

Yes, Karen. Yay You! 😊 Thanks for watching my videos. I'm glad they help you. Quitting smoking helps a lot, too. Hang in there and keep singing!
Ken, Ken, Ken! how do you sing like this? Looks like magic! You are an amazing vocal coach! incredible! you are a genius! A big huge from Italy!
Thank you, Bruce! Merry Christmas! 🎄🌟🎁
@@kentamplin Merry Christmas, Ken! Buon Natale, amico mio! Sei grande! 👍
DAMN! I REALLY LOVE SINGING! Hahahaha great video Ken, always supporting from Guatemala! Deep Purple has a great energy. I've always wanted to sing Burn, but I still need some practice to work on my head voice. I'd like to see them live they sound like gods!
epic stuff..this vibrato is the best tool in rock
When Glenn says "Liar" it sounds funny cause he just says it not sing it. This man got it all. Great vibrato, tone, small man ha ha. Have to like it. Now I know too you don't have to be bodybuilder to sing great...and with powerful voice.
Ian Paice what a monster drummer.
Live Shows Monster!
And not one shot of him in this video... pacey going mental!
He’s absolutely brilliant but I much prefer Cozy Powell’s drumming to this song.
Glenn still killing it at his age too. There is young vocalist that can't touch him. David Coverdale is awesome too. Whitesnake is one of the first bands that got me in to this kind of music.
redskin4040 Killer band!
Exactly Ken! The "proof" is in your's & your student's singing!!
🤟😎💞🎤🎵🎵🎶🎶 And Thanks again for Another great critique video! 🙏🤗
Thanks for stopping by my channel, Stevie!
Thanks for your comments, Stuart!
Man, I really love your reactions
This one was an expected one. Those two voices are just awesome
Thank you, as always!
I'm glad you were ready for this one, Cristian!
Graham bonnet is phenomenal. In the Eyes of the world is an incredible song
Glenn is a killer singer, hasn't lost anything really over the decades, phenomenal
Hey man, awesome as always, things to learn, stories and it brings motivation to sing better than anyone else! Cheers, Richard from Paris
Thanks for your comment, surethebest!
Deep Purple ,Rainbow , Whitesnake were my "religion" when it came to music in my youth till mid 20s. Knew every word, Chord and solo. Still Love this. Mistreated my "Blues Song"
But Damn Ken ,You Do a damn 1st Class job yourself.
Thanks so much, MARC!
Just have to say Mr. Tamplin...your voice literally gives me chills
In the good way, I hope!
Never too old for rock and roll...
I agree, 5!
How??? GREAT!!!! They should play next half time
Great video :) You are an amazing singer, Ken :)
Thank you, Kenneth! You are very kind!
One of my favorite albums.
Tau Noctua Same here.
Ken, what do you think about Glenns vocal in Phenomena's first album? For me its like his peak performance, love it so much :)
Marc Omar I agree, its fantastic and strangely enough he doesnt mention it in his autobiography.
The thing is this vocal coach can sing and actually knows what he's doing. First time I saw his video I was impressed.
The proof is in the singing!
Oh how I wish I could do that. My voice is just too low. I think my voice is just built for country.
Love love love Deep Purple!!!
Gots to have me some Deep Purple!
The most insane voice in rock!
Amazing!
