    Hi! Thanks so much for putting together these tests.
    You are correct in saying that Bluetooth weakness is more on the obstruction than distance. Airpods tend to be more visible compared to Instamic that you might cover with your entire body. I personally reached 80 feet with Instamic facing my iPhone 7 when I have originally released the Hands-Free Profile that allows this kind of connections.
    From what I can see, the majority of our users are moto-vloggers or vloggers in general where Instamic is close to the camera or surfers who like to have a simple setup that preserves the waterproof feature on the camera.
    Every time Instamic is recording/streaming the LEDs show the VU meter. If you have activated the "Auto LEDs off" option on our app, the LEDs will go off after 10 secs when the mic is streaming or recording. You simply press the Instamic button to check if it is streaming/recording (VU meter) or if the unit is off (LEDs not active). You can turn that option off if you want to have the LEDs always on though. I hope it helps.
    Thanks again for this video.
    Very useful and informative for the Insta360 community.
    Wish you the best with you channel!
    Take care, Michele

    Really fantastic video, thank you so much! You present some awesome options, but I'd like to also respectfully offer another solution. Given all of the options, for my workflow the most elegant solution by far---which uses one of the exact pieces of equipment you review, involves no bluetooth or wireless setup at all, has no limitation regarding distance from camera, and has no physical stuff dangling from the camera at all---is to simply record your voice audio directly to an audio recording device, in this case your InstaMic, rather than transmitting audio signals back to the Insta360. You then simply synch the recorded audio with the video during post-production. I use a fairly middle-of-the-range video processing software and even it can automatically synch audio after just 2 or 3 seconds of analyzing the files. The bonus here is that you can also use the audio recorded by the Insta360 for background ambient audio, especially if you're in an environment like near a river or out bird watching where you want to get some of the nice ambient sounds on your track as well.

      I've also found that disabling wind suppression has helped a ton. I use my X3 to record at track days on my motorcycle. With suppression on, anything higher than 15mph and the audio just dissipates and crackles, whereas without it, I can clearly hear the engine of the bike all the way up into the 140mph zone (this is without special wind socks on the camera.. just mounting on the nose or behind me on the tail).

    I'm thinking some cheap version of Bluetooth just to have a scratch tack for your audio sync and a decent external recording would be a very easy (and much better quality) option for most people.
    For people that don't mind editing you could forgo the Bluetooth connection and just record a 10 second scratch track directly to the insta360 and sync your audio track.
    AirPods sound terrible even when used on the phone but still would make a usable scratch track if you already have them.

      There are many budget wireless mic options, but quality probably isn’t the best, plus you need to add the X4 Mic adapter (an extra $20) and then the receiver is sticking out the side and can easily rotate and appear in your image. I would suggest that the stand-alone DJI Mic 2 transmitter ($99) is a pretty good budget option.

    What is going on with these super expensive mic options? I have shot gopro for years and you can get external mics for about $30 that sound fine. Super small basic mics. There is no way you need to spend $200 on some fancy mic. You could do the same test and nobody would know the difference between the $30 mic and the $200 one for voice. Insta has horrific audio, but you dont need a mic that costs half of the camera, thats crazy. Normal cameras have decent mics and they are not near this complicated.

      @gwebster65  5 месяцев назад

      That's exciting. We love Thailand and actually just got back from a trip there (will be posting some videos soon). Make sure your plans include Chiang Mai.
      As far as remote controlling the X3 is concerned, there are a few options:
      1. Voice control - you can start and stop recording or take stills with the corresponding voice commands, but the downside is that the camera has to be powered on (and there is no "voice wake" function).
      2. Use the app on a smartphone or even smartwatch - but here too, the camera has to be powered on.
      3. There is a bluetooth remote available, that will start/stop, take stills and even change modes remotely, and can also power on/off the camera. I also made a video review of this remote (ruclips.net/video/oIShdvLh4qQ/видео.html), One limitation of using the bluetooth remote, is that you cannot connect a bluetooth microphone (like the Instamic) at the same time.
      As far as purchasing is concerned, Amazon is a good choice, but make sure it's not some marketplace reseller. The link below is for the X3 from the official Insta360 store. Just be sure to buy from a reputable store.

It would need to be a right-angle USB-C plug and you would also need to not go too far down, so as to block the output from the power selfie stick. You could also bundle with an appropriate USB-C cable.

      Currently, my choice would be the DJI Mic 2 (amzn.to/3UO5hw1). You can use it in 2 different ways:
      a) plugging in the receiver, for the best quality, or
      b) just connect the transmitter by bluetooth for easy setup or when you need to be waterproof/weatherproof

      The on-board mic will struggle with that - luckily there is also a mic adapter for the X2, allowing you to hook up an external mic. Another option would be to use a higher quality stand-alone audio recorder, then sync up the video and audio in post.

    Hi, I have been thinking about buying the X3, and if I do I am mostly interested in the Instamic.
    Now, I have been watching videos about the Instamic before, when it came out and so on but is it correct that if I connect it to the X3 it will send the audio to the X3, of course, but also save the sound to a memory card on the Instamic, so if the connection is bad I can take the audiofile from the Instamic and sync it to the video later on my computer?
    Thank you for the test! :-)

    • @gwebster65
      @gwebster65  11 месяцев назад +1

      Two things:
      First, there is no memory card - if used as a voice recorder, the Instamic saves the file to on-board memory (like a flash drive) and is uploaded by connecting the Instamic to your computer by USB.
      Second, as far as I know, you cannot use the Instamic as a wireless mic and voice recorder at the same time…it’s either one or the other.

    Hi there, lovely very interesting video. Thank you so much for the contributions and dedication. What mic moto-loggers use with an insta 360x3 that is waterproof and it’s easy to connect once you go back to the motorbike( meaning it will connect via Bluetooth directly without touching anything)?.
    Very important is to say bikers use thick gloves and they want to know when they decide to record( as they have the microphone inside the helmet in order to avoid the wind noise as much as possible) a mic that is easy to touch and start recording unless that has voice command( like AirPods-which seems a bit of a issue every single time you go back to the bike and you have to connected to the X3).
    Thank you for your time.

    • @gwebster65
      @gwebster65  Год назад +1

      the Instamic is waterproof (personally verified!) so no problem there. The “no touch” thing is more difficult - this is a limitation of the X3. You have to go into the settings menu and reconnect each time. I guess we have to hope for a firmware update or new version that solves this.

      -How do you start recording without touching the camera when it’s in front of the bike? Will it work voice command at 60km/h in order to start recording?…if yes, then I don’t need insta remote control.
      - Bikers use thick gloves. Instamic is good because it’s not attached at all to the X3 but, will it connect and start recording by voice command to the X3?
      Please answer this as well.

      The aim is to have audio/video together at the precise moment i start recording video.
      May I ask you in your video how you do it?.
      -Do you basically press record on the X3 and press record on the Instamic in order to have audio/video together? Or how do you use?. Could you have the Instamic on without recording( connected via Bluetooth to the X3), but when you press record on the X3 ( as it is connected via Bluetooth) audio/video record together?
      _And with the AirPods, once is Bluetooth connected to the X3 you only press record/ command to the X3 and audio/video record together, correct?

    Interesting - but unfortunately you didn't seem to test the basic sound of the inboard mics. I rather suspect that you had wind noise reduction turned on, which gives a rather unpleasant processed sound to the inboard mics - that would explain the dire sound at 10:22- really, the wind noise setting should only be used if you are desperate! In fact, all the audio options for the X3 involve digital processing of the sound, including reducing it to mono, except when you set the audio to "stereo" and you don't choose "voice focus" in post-processing. Then you get pretty good quality unprocessed stereo sound, using all four of the built in mics. Well, too late for this video, but going through the various options for the inboard sound in a future video might be worthwhile.
