  • Loud music, packed beaches and plenty of cheap booze - Golden Sands near the town of Varna in Bulgaria is a popular holiday destination. Especially for young tourist revellers. But how does it feel to spend your holiday by the Black Sea, with the war in Ukraine raging across the water to the north? And is the war having an impact on tourism in Bulgaria? DW's Lukas Stege asked around.

Golden sands can be peaceful and is family friendly. There are hotels that are far from the center and reallyyyyyy peaceful.

As a Bulgarian , and I live somewhere between golden sands and sunny beach xd (what a lucky guy I am) I can honestly say, golden sands is more for Germans, and sunny beach for brits. Sunny beach is like Ibiza , golden sands is better than Mallorca (been there few times I mean in Mallorca ) but still, if you like peace and quiet, there is Kamchia , shkorpilovci , Albena , Obzor ….

When we were flying from Prague to Burgas for vacation this year, we were also flying with multiple young Ukrainian women with small kids, they seemed well off and enjoying themselves. The best thing europeans can do in this situation is keep calm and carry on. Its important to keep the economy going strong by working, investing and innovating but also spending. What better way to spend than on a nice holiday we deserve to relax sometimes?

I was enroute to Sophia August 2021 and while making a connecting flight I was notified the Bulgarian government has closed the borders (covid) to Americans. I returned home. hope I eventually get there.

You're not next to the war in Bulgaria. Go a little further north to Mamaia Beach in Romania if you wanna be "next" to the war. Mamaia Beach is the best beach on the Black Sea though and way more packed and fun than Bulgaria's beaches. It's next to Constanta, the largest port in the Black Sea and it's a big party scene there all summer long with natural real sandy beaches because it's located in the Danube Delta.

I have been all over Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Prices in Bulgaria are unbeatable. The beaches are as good as the best in the other countries and the Black sea is much much much better than the Mediterranean when it comes to the level of salt and temperature...Croatia sucks...it's all rocks in there.
