Its the herd mentality. There are millions of gorgeous sunny beaches all over the globe that don't see as much tourism and they actually want it! I just watched a show on Jamaica and the locals there love having tourists, this is how people make a livng and the economy thrives.
I never understood the appeal of travelling to some exotic place just to spend half the time there intoxicated. Never been to Mallorca, but I saw a similar phenomenon when I travelled through the Algarve region of Portugal.

We, the family of four, considered Mallorca and Canary Islands for our upcoming holiday week in October, but due to the massive protests seen on these places, we decided to travel Greece. It just seems that the Greek are much more welcoming and are ok with the aspect of tourism. If the Spanish are tired of tourists, we respect that and stay away from them 👍
Greeks are MUCH more hospitable and friendly in general. Probably the friendliest in Europe. I saw a big difference in service from locals between Spain and Greece.
That is great that you decided not to go to Mallorca. Mallorcans will appreciate this. I hope more people stay away and make the place more bearable for the locals.

I’m going for the first time next month early September. I’ve been researching a lot and reading and watching lots of reports about the Over tourism on this island. Especially now that I’ve been living in Germany for four years. I’ve come to know Mallorca as number one destination for German holiday makers. I hesitated a bit going to Mallorca, But at the same time, I wanted to see what the hype is all about. I managed to curate how my Travel is going to be, basically private boat trips every day so I can avoid the beaches. And swim directly in the beautiful water. And that’s going to be my conscious contribution into being able to enjoy mallorca without adding too much strain on the local. I hope it works out well for both parties ❤
The real problem is that British and German tourists have the need to drink and be devastated to have real fun. In Southern Europe the drinking culture is way different.
Jose Dias, the head of tourism, said that apartments hadn't been built in 10 years. But have any hotels been built in that time? If so, then the people and corporations who benefit from tourism are the problem.
My family and I are heading to Mallorca in September. It came highly recommended by our Spanish cousins, because in between the hectic cities of Madrid, Barcelona and Paris (those are our intended stops), we wanted one stop on our vacation where we could just relax and enjoy beautiful beaches and nature. Specifically avoided Ibiza because we're not looking to party, we didn't realize how touristic Mallorca was, I guess our cousins went when they were much younger before the current tourist boom. I guess we'll see how it goes, but as an optimistic person I'm sure I will love it regardless.
I actually wanted to move to Mallorca, but decided to move to Sardegna now. Because the authorities and locals were not helpful at all. I realized new people are not welcome on the island. I’m very happy now that my new home will be on Sardegna and not on Mallorca. Also because of the mass tourism on Mallorca. Sardegna doesn’t have that problem (yet).
Mallorca is a great island, but El Arenal is the worste place to visit in Mallorca. That's the party area. The island is beautiful, it has many interesting place to visit all year round. Also very popular for cyclists and hiking. It's true that in summer there are really a lot of people on the island. but that's only 3 months, the other months are perfect to recover. I was mostly in September there was perfect not so many tourist and is easy to find a Hotel all over the Island . but is definitely worth to visit.
There is just too much overprinted money circulating among the upper classes that is damaging the regular people by taking away their cities. Is not about regular tourists is about the investment funds buying buildings and about the high income individuals buying for investment and overpricing for a "good return of investment" not noticing they overpayed for a house that someone else really needed.
We went for a week to Mallorca and just came back yesterday. We stayed in Cala Millor and it was fine. Not as busy as the media was portraying it. But I can imagine in Palma or places like Calo Des Moro it can get overcrowed. Unfortunately, Mallorca relies solely on tourism for survival and as long tourists behave, it will be fine.
People have the right to protest, if on top of that they have to keep quiet, the solution lies with the politicians who are the main culprits for not regulating and caring about the citizens' problems, the tourists come because they let them, if there is saturation it is because it is allowed for money andinterests of a few, (including politicians) disturbing tourists by throwing water at them is shameful, and who knows what the reasons are behind it, it is important to protest now because if not it will get worse and worse.
So, a solution could be to create a tariff to enter the island (i.e. 250 Euros per person). This will screen out the individuals who don’t have the funds to afford the destination. In many cases, the ppl who are irresponsible and, disrespectful to the destination are younger and just don’t care. With the monies collected from the 250 euro tariff, you can help to pay for police force to enforce the rules. You can also flex on the tariff based on season (i.e. free in low season, etc.). By creating rules and regulations you can preserve the money into the destination and minimize the impact and find creative ways to enforce the the rules. It defiintely needs regulation - unfortunately ppl don’t care so, we have to find solutions that are sometimes unpopular.
That is the whole point. Their industry is not bringing them benefits. Apparently there’s lack of school teachers, who with a 1,600-2,000 euros (net) a month cannot make it anywhere there. But also nurses and physicians (the latter earning close to 3,200-4,000 eur net a month) are missing. It is very likely that quite a few locals making a fortune by renting inherited apartments or houses, but lower-middle class is struggling, there is no question about that. I presume most of them (in the Canary and Balearic Islands, and maybe some pockets by the Mediterranean coast) rely on tourism one way or the other to make up their lives. Possibly they work somewhere between 40-50 hours a week and earning between 1400 to 1800 euros a month. It is clearly not sustainable, they need to be faaaar more selective with the tourism they receive, targeting high incomes and those who can afford to pay for a more cultural experience rather than just beach and sun. To put it differently, they are selling Ferraris at VW Polo price. Their nature is slowly being destroyed because of so many people and at what price? Also with taxes from tourism (as if they were coming from oil) they could seek to establish good quality affordable public lodging for residents of those places. Also diversify their industries. Now it is on them!
I think they should require all non-local hotels and Airbnb's there to contribute to a fund for local housing builds. If they are going to profit from the island, they need to support and contribute to resources. And Airbnb's, like everywhere else, need to be heavily regulated.
Tourists are not the problem, lack of regulation is. Poor working conditions and lack of enforcement of regulations are driving us to poverty. Access to housing is off the books if you're a local and hotel owners are hoarding all the money while our standard of living is sinking further and further.
This problem exists everywhere there is mass tourism. In the UK there are regions where the housing stock is bought up by people from large cities and rented out. This cases the poorer local population to have less opportunities for housing and the jobs created by tourism are often low paid. The wealth generated goes to the hoteliers mostly. The average person suffers more than they gain in my opinion. They should introduce some sort of special levy or tax which should be used to compensate the locals for the effects of mass tourism.
To conserve nature form overcrowd you need some restrictions. For example; 1- Put a daily visitor limit 2- Symbolic amount of entry fee to beaches. For over populated tourism there are many things to do, but the government, locals and tourism companies have to unite and bring solutions. The locals obviously no need this much tourism and new buildings to live. Local people leaving from the island and renting the apartments for the tourist. The greed has to stop. I think to live together in peace the government should limit for Airbnb or short term renting. Additionally, Airbnb is very greedy as they have been increasing the rates and fees and than the properties become more expensive.
People who work in the Islands can't afford to live there. As where I live there are flats that are empty and the price for renting or buying them is completely abusive, I think that building more is NOT a solution, they are building more and killing the nature, expelling animals from their homes, etc, it is horrible
Mallorca perhaps did not properly curate their vacation industry. Rather than appealing to the German yob tourists they could selected a more exclusive clientele. Many vacation spots make this same mistake.
well when they write "kill a tourist" it doesn't feel very welcoming. especially on the canary islands. but they shouldn't be angry at the tourists. they should be angry at the government for how they handle things. most tourists are good people. and i don't hear them complain about all the illegal immigrants flooding the canary islands everyday. but they are angry at us from europe who pay a lot of money to travel and without us there is no economy
Truth be told Tourism and tourists are just a nuisance. They dont respect local culture, do what ever they want (pee in public in Amsterdam). Mallorca also has white sand beaches. I’m moving to Sardegna, an Italian island with many white sand beaches and clear water. But also on Sardegna, it depends on what coast you are. You have Caribbean like beaches, brown sand beaches or stone beaches. Same on Mallorca.

PLEASE promote lesser-known destinations that NEED tourism and stop promoting the places EVERYONE already knows. This is especially true in Greece, where Santorini has been suffering this overcrowding, whilst next door in Anafi, Sikinos or Amorgos they're lucky if they get 1/10th the visitors!
It's interesting that they think it is ok to break the rules or the law in another country bc they say so. I am not sure if they would be doing that in their own neighborhoods and flipping the law. Does the German police let them do whatever they want? I think Europe and the US has a drinking problem. I understand that people drink wine, beer, and spirits bc is all you have and it socially acceptable. But really, what you should be drinking on a hot day on the beach is coconut water, papaya, orange, watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, guanoabana, limonada, naranjada, or a mamey milkshake. That's just to mention a few fruits that are good for you and are non-alcoholic. On the other hand, I do understand why they need to get drunk in the morning or the middle of the day before they hook up. They are not particularly good looking, so alcohol might make them very attractive. I don't know. 😛
More regions need to act like Barcelona are doing with control on short-term rentals which is strangling efforts of locals to live there. Interesting how the head of the Tourism Advisory Council, when asked if he was in contact with those organising the demos, didn't answer 🤔 Maybe therein lies part of the reason why locals are protesting and are frustrated. As the report said and as most locals would probably agree, it's all about a balance which has been completely lost.
If tourists will stop to come there. They will die of starvation. I Have been there one time. Its not bad climate and beaches. But service is not good. You have to pay for everything, beach towels, air tax, beach beds. Turkey much better

Mallorca also has white sand beaches. I’m moving to Sardegna, an Italian island with many white sand beaches and clear water. But also on Sardegna, it depends on what coast you are. You have Caribbean like beaches, brown sand beaches or stone beaches. Same on Mallorca.

PLEASE promote lesser-known destinations that NEED tourism and stop promoting the places EVERYONE already knows. This is especially true in Greece, where Santorini has been suffering this overcrowding, whilst next door in Anafi, Sikinos or Amorgos they're lucky if they get 1/10th the visitors!

It's interesting that they think it is ok to break the rules or the law in another country bc they say so. I am not sure if they would be doing that in their own neighborhoods and flipping the law. Does the German police let them do whatever they want?
I think Europe and the US has a drinking problem. I understand that people drink wine, beer, and spirits bc is all you have and it socially acceptable. But really, what you should be drinking on a hot day on the beach is coconut water, papaya, orange, watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, guanoabana, limonada, naranjada, or a mamey milkshake. That's just to mention a few fruits that are good for you and are non-alcoholic. On the other hand, I do understand why they need to get drunk in the morning or the middle of the day before they hook up. They are not particularly good looking, so alcohol might make them very attractive. I don't know. 😛

More regions need to act like Barcelona are doing with control on short-term rentals which is strangling efforts of locals to live there. Interesting how the head of the Tourism Advisory Council, when asked if he was in contact with those organising the demos, didn't answer 🤔 Maybe therein lies part of the reason why locals are protesting and are frustrated. As the report said and as most locals would probably agree, it's all about a balance which has been completely lost.

If tourists will stop to come there. They will die of starvation. I Have been there one time. Its not bad climate and beaches. But service is not good. You have to pay for everything, beach towels, air tax, beach beds. Turkey much better
