As they say over here in the (UK),
You learn new thing's every other day,so thanks my friend you've also saved me buying a new battery, I thought if connecting two together like you've shown would cause one to explode,
    I was obviously wrong.

This actually works. One of my fatmax 18v batteries was dead. I used the other battery and a piece of twin core flex wire. I only joined them for about 10 seconds and immediately put the dead battery in the charger and it started charging straight away. Thanks.

Great video. I did the same thing to a Chraftsman 19.2 lit-ion. The tricky part was figuring out where to connect the leads. Turns out on a Chraftsman the positive side is the end where the plastic cover is curved. The negative is exactly opposite or the end with the short straight plastic. Hooked it up, 10 minutes later it was showing 9v. Plugged it in the charger and away it went!!!

Thank you for taking the time to post this video. It saved me from having to take back my open box Kobalt 40V mower that I just bought. I suspect the dead "unchargable" battery had been the reason that it was returned. Your process worked like a charm, and the battery charged completely overnight when it had previously been flashing red on more than one charger. I used another 40V Kobalt battery to charge it for about 10 minutes.

@@MichaelNazareth you don’t have to actually connect them, like with alligator clamps or anything. Just get a couple pieces of insulated copper wire, touch the negative (-) on bad battery to the neg (-) of a 2nd battery, and the positive (+) on bad battery to the pos (+) on the 2nd battery, and you should see a small spark if it’s hooked up correctly. Hold them there for a few minutes then pull it back out and see if the voltage goes up. If so, try it on the charger. If it charges, you’re good, to go, if not repeat the process until it registers on the charger and starts charging again. Just make sure you charge it fully before using it again.

I have a Dewalt 12v lithium ion impact driver set with 2 batteries. About 3 months in, one battery would not charge, the yellow light was blinking, which said something about the temperature, even though it was at room temperature. I did this trick on it just now and it has charged now and is working perfectly fine. I knew the battery was still good, cuz it's fairly new, barely used, I think the battery level light was being pushed while it was in the case and drained the battery all the way down. Thanks a whole bunch, man!!

Battery-to-Battery method worked perfectly to kickstart my 12V Bosch Li-ion batt. It was somehow sitting at 1.2V. I connected this dead batt, as per vid, to a companion 12V batt. Let it sit for 20min. Then disconn batts. Dead batt had been restored up to about 9V at which point charger worked to bring it up to full charge in about 35min. Seems to work great again in my drill motor. Thanks!!

I connected it to just a small 9V household battery for just a couple of minutes, and it brought it up to 5 or 6V. Put it back on the charger to see if it would take, and sure enough...it started charging again! Going to let it go, but hopefully it will be good as new! *fingers crossed*

Thanks to your video I revived a SWIT S-8056N Li-Ion Broadcast Video Camera Battery. After leaving it for a month in the camera last Friday I took it out of the camera to charge it, but "smart" charger wasn't responding to the battery. I thought that I scrapped a $300 battery. After I watched your video, using the same principle, I taped wires with electric tape to the leads of another NP-1 style battery (positive to positive and negative to negative) for 5 minutes, then dropped the depleted battery into the charger. Charger became very hot at first, but came back to life. Close call...

Cheers for this upload!! Hugely appreciated. I just tried this earlier this evening on the battery for a laptop I just bought from eBay, and was extremely disappointed and annoyed to find that the battery appeared to be knackered - so much for the "perfect working order" description. Looks like it had just "gone to sleep" and wouldn't therefore wouldn't charge. I carefully broke the casing open and did exactly the same thing as you did using a laptop battery from another older laptop I no longer need. Both were 11.1V with the usual 18650 cells arranged in series. The 'sleeping' battery was 3 cells in series and was reading only 6.5V - I suspect it had been laying 'flat' and unused for well over a year judging by when this laptop last had a Windows Update run on it. A few seconds of doing this and the voltage was up to 10.2V. Put it back together, plugged it back into the laptop, and off it went :-). Currently at 86% charged so will be interested to see how long it lasts once fully charged :-)

I tried this on My Ryobi 18v lithium battery and it worked fantastic. In my case, however, I had to take the battery apart and attach jumpers from the charged battery to the battery leads inside the battery. At first, I tried the leads outside but some circuit seemed to be isolating me from bring up the voltage on the dead one. With the jumpers on the internal terminals, I was able to bring up the voltage to where the charger would recognise it as valid. It's charging right now. Very happy. These batteries are not cheap to replace.
    Much thanks.

THESE manufacturers have these safeties in place to protect YOU from burning your damn house down.

I tried this as well - it works great. My 24V li-on Ryobi was dead for 2+ years - super dead. This is just like jump-starting a car battery! I had no options - they didn't make this model of battery anymore, and I couldn't buy it anywhere - I was looking at throwing out the entire tool and spending lots of $$ to buy a new one. I connected the negative-negative and positive-positive to my 20V li-on Black & Decker, and I had to wait for 10 hrs for my Ryobi to get a 20V charge. (Note that different brands will have the positive-negative leads in different positions). If you do negative to positive, you will get the arcing - so there is no way you can make a mistake on this! Then I put my Ryobi on its charger, and it started charging without any problems. So for $15 for the alligator clips and AWG 14 gauge wire, I rescued my battery instead of throwing out the entire tool! Thanks, this is a great DIY hack.

Only use a lithium charger with lithium batteries. Piggy backing in parallel batteries works well for smart chargers because you use the known good battery to fool the undercharged battery. This can be dangerous so don’t ever leave them unsupervised. Been doing this for years with RC batteries and I use a 4010 duo charger which will charger any type of battery you want, including car batteries. It’s also capable of putting batteries into storage mode when you’re not using them keeping the life going for years when properly maintained.

Thanks for this! I had to get another battery to do it, but now I don't have to throw out a barely-used battery that I was careless with! ;)

Thanks, this worked great for me. I already bought a replacement battery, but now I have a backup as well! I used some wiring I had laying around, the solid bare wire slid right in. Thanks again!

2 lithium porter cable batteries here, about 5/10 minutes as this man shows and they now take a charge and are stronger than the 1 that was working.

Perfect! Now I have a free spare. Originally, I had a brand new Echo CBP-58V20 that was blinking red (“conditioning”) for over 24 hours in the charging station. (Bought the blower on year-end clearance and did not take it out of the box until this fall.) Called warranty service and they sent out a replacement battery. I was told to recycle the defective original battery. After the new battery was fully charged, I decided to give this a try. The original tested at 3.3 volts (from 58v!!). After 5 minutes, disconnected the wires and placed the defective battery into the charging station. Viola!! it’s now charging! Thanks!!!

I had two 20 volt li ion batteries from dewalt that died. Apparently if you don't use them for 6 mos they completely lose their charge and die, meaning that cannot be charged. I called dewalt and they happily replaced the batteries but I wasn't about to just throw these unused batteries out. I tried to resuscitate these batteries using this trick and lo and behold, SUCCESS!! Instead of sticking metal pieces into the batteries I used some 10 amp fuses I had laying around. It was scary at first because of the small spark and the potential for explosion. All in all, great hack!!

What voltage was you battery at when you fixed it. Mine's showing zero and this method isn't working. Brand new 2.6 amp, 4 months old.

I use a DC power supply just to get the battery to start taking a charge. It's safe because I limit the current to 20 milliamps, which will not heat up the battery. Once the battery starts to take a charge, I use the regular charger to finish charging the battery.
