My Name is Mud video kit was a Purecussion kit - They were more notibly known for the R.I.M.S. suspension systems. I had one of theses kits around the same time period and toured with it. Very tight sounding and definately sounded better mic'd up.
Kind of a fun story about Tim and his use of the concert toms. Tim actually started using them as sort of a matter of necessity. After he left Primus and went Laundry during the Motivator era of that band they were touring around in a van that also hauled all their gear. Tim was using his Honey Gold Starclassic kit for that time , albeit a stripped down version. Just the 3 rack toms and a floor tom, but he removed all the bottom heads so he could nest the drums to save space in the van, also turned out that he just liked the sound. I got to be friends with Tim during that era and still occasionally get to see him when he rolls thru town.
I actually got to meet and be friends with Tim during the Motivator era of Laundry, my buddy Paul and I built their website for them, my sister also designed one of their t-shirts. I’ll still occasionally get to see him when they roll thru town, as we have mutual friends. Tim is a great dude and he looks out for his friends. They recently rolled thru Pittsburgh on tour and it got arranged for my sister and her husband to be able to feed the band and crew from their food truck there. Tim even bought a shirt! So things go full circle that way!
Bassist here; this channel keeps getting better & better & the interviewer is probably one of the best interviewers I've seen. His technique is near perfect and allows the guest to talk & explain - he also asks relevant questions, oustanding job - keep it up!
31 years ago MD did a great cover story on Tim Alexander and obligingly Primus played in my town just weeks later. The entire show I stood in front of the stage an arms length from Tim's orange Pork Pies. He'd recently ditched his second bass and gone double pedal, the Zen-like ergonomics of his streamlined new config fascinated me. 20 years later I stopped at a topless joint for a beer after work and the DJ played My Name Is Mud. The dancer in front of me visibly wrinkled her nose at my starched shirt and tie, probably thinking old fart (I was 30 years older than her) until I mouthed the words "so I kissed him upside the cranium with an aluminum baseball bat." Suddenly she was beaming smiles, even sat with me without my asking. Who knew Primus wasn't just a band, but a social lubricant? So did I buy a second beer? Nah, hadn't practiced yet that day.
Couldn’t believe you got the one and only Tim ‘Herb’ Alexander and as a bonus go through all of his kits! One of my all time favorite drummers; great job👏👏
Holy mackarel!! The great and powerful Herb Alexander, my first and foremost influence on drumming. Just recently got a 6" Zil-Bel, which I think is quite a trademark cymbal for Mr. Alexander. Gonna listen to this later.
❤ OMG !!! You Got Tim “ Herb “ Alexander on your show ?!? I’m so jealous , one of my favorite drummers , the first concert I ever saw was Primus in 1990 !!! I sat on the stage five feet from Tim and just watched him like a hawk all night !!! Thanks for sharing Bart !!! 🤙😎🥁
Herb was a huge influence on me. Interestingly though it was in that musical way he spoke about in the beginning. Also, I was really surprised to hear he didn’t really like the drum sound of tales from the punch bowl. I FREAKING LOVE THE SOUND OF THOSE DRUMS! They were so big and resonant with that super unique reverb thing they had going on. I can hear them clear as day in my head as I’m writing this❤️
Same! To me that is the definitive drum sound. Not just for Primus, but for anything. Best recorded example of drums ever put down IMO. Sounds like you’re behind the kit!
Tim is hands down, one of the best alt/rock drummers alive today. The only reason I say best alt/rock drummer is because that's all I've heard him play, I'm sure he's just as good in any genre though!
Herb, Lane, and 'Brain' the formidable Primus drum/ percussion triumvirate! I didn't become aware of Primus until 'Jerry' vid and quickly ran to get 'Seas Of Cheese' disc. Still have it. Since 14-15. Such a phenomenal musician Tim is!! Unreal. Everyone involved in their circle(s) are great players/ writers. Full Spectrum Abilities. I remember cutting my teeth trying to learn some Primus tunes starting with 'Jerry'. I was thinking " Dude I gotta learn that little fucker!" It changed how I thought about drumming in certain ways right off the rip. It's like a few different styles of jamming mixed together which made it a bit trickier to learn than it seems/ sounds. Great Interview yet again Bart Cheers!!
After hanging out with him several times, he’s actually a prick, and has terrible morals. He’s a home wrecker, and I wish I could have gotten video of how he treated his wife, he’s an abuser. Never get to know your heroes, it ruins the image you have of them.
Funny how he pronounced 'Peart' correctly the 2nd time 'round but then returned to mispronouncing it for the rest of the video 😁 Which was a lot of fun to watch and listen to, so thank you both, Bart and Tim! 😀👍 I admit Primus are a bit _too_ weird and quirky for me, and I never succeeded to get into them beyond 'Wynona's BBB' unfortunately, but I still am able to appreciate and respect those guys as musicians and also as the nice people they are 😊 And congratulations Bart on getting to chat with one of your drum heroes! 😍👍 I'm very happy for you! 😊🙏
Pretty cool interview. Could've asked him about his early Tama Starclassic kits, such as the honey gold kit, marine blue fade concert tom kit, and of course the white kit, which you mentioned. I think he pieced out and sold the honey gold kit on eBay. I remember one of the gong drums was up there for bid... It expired in the middle of the night and I set an alarm and totally missed it... Man I was mad at myself. Cool piece of history right there.
Honestly, the gong drum might’ve been in decent shape, but I’ve handled those drums and honestly, they were pretty banged up. Undoubtedly cool drums but they were in pretty rough shape.
@@brutesquadbbq2268 that just speaks to how for professional touring musicians they’re tools, not keepsakes. And just like my tools as a carpenter: I don’t intentionally beat the crap out of them, but over the years they do get beat up..
@@clayfoster8234 oh for sure, but that particular kit got beat up because Laundry was touring in a van and Tim had removed the bottom heads so he could nest the drums to save space. I’m sure they were in much better shape when they were used for Primus with individual hard cases and plenty of room in trucks to move em around 😂
Transitions not fills! Exactly! Play the song. I remember, at one of his clinics back in 95, Tim talking about making beats/parts out of fills. He demonstrated various fills and then made beats out of them. Tim is one of the most musical drummers ever.
If there was a time for me to recognize moments where I knew where I was standing it would be seeing Jerry race car driver video on MTV and whichever executive gave the go ahead to that in many ways that person is also responsible for putting me on a direction and course in my life that is worth me saying thank you for.....interesting different music is important

😥 No discussion about the Laundry era? Blacktongue and Motivator are still some of my favorite TA performances...

It's good to see that I'm not the only guy that thinks Tim is one of the best out there, top 5 for me !

As a kid growing up on Herb’s drumming, he really made an impression on me when he chose NOT to play at certain times and left space in the song.

I thought Tim used to use an LP Ice Bell back in the day... Zil Bel's came out in the mid 90's I believe.
dude this channel just keeps getting better and better!!
i've been waiting 30+ years for this vidio
I assume the MNIM kit was a Purecussion RIMS kit
Great interview!
Wow, one of my idols! Nice interview!
Awesome interview 🙌🥁 thank you very much 🙏
It’s couldn’t get anyone more authoritative than the man himself. Good job 👍

So cool!
Woah, dude!
I used to have a poster of the image on this video's thumbnail - and I've been looking everywhere to find another one to order!
Great man, great drummer, great soul! Thank you Herb for those grooviest crazy stuff you suck us in it.
I'd love to hear more long form conversations with Tim but focused more on the music than on the gear!
Herb is in my Top 3! What a great guy!

That first kit is the Remo “Purecussion” kit
Amazing drummer ❤👏🏾🔥🙌🏾
Were you referring to Columbus, OH? My home town - never left. Cool interview!
Awesome vid
Ah man rad!! Colossal “get”!!
Awesome show! Oh yeah, Larry's a bastard!

Those first generation Starclassic birch kits were AMAZING.

Remo Falam head on his snare. The red Gretsch kit. Same snare head that Chad Sexton used on 311’s first four albums.
He has an Impulse Ride???!!! Awesome
Oh my god YES!
😎👍❤🇺🇸💪🥁🐽🐖🐷 BILL ROCKS!!! I love the Pork Pie kit!

I KNEW Herb had a Wuhan China type in his setup, there’s no mistaking that trashy tone!
