There’s something about Topol’s singing and acting that makes Tevye completely his own. I’m will not dismiss Zero Mostel, Alfred Molina, or any of the other performers that have come before or after. It’s just that Topol does these little things with his acting and singing that none of the others quiet do. Because his voice is such so strong and deep, he plays around with it and when he raises it, it gives the character an edge of extra personality. A great example is when he delivers the line “do what would’ve been so terrible, if I had, a small fortune.” The high emphasis on the word “small” is such a tiny detail but adds so much to Tevye’s character.
This indeed the Real Tefje. And... that deep deep buzzing voice, sweet as honey, yet very powerful! And then his acting. Oy, der Jiddische gefühle! He's the best!
I did briefly, after I saw him play this on Broadway in '91, the year this was taped. He seemed a kind, generous man and very down-to-earth. I consider myself blessed.
R.I.P. Chaim Topol (September 9, 1935 - March 8, 2023)
May your memory be an eternal blessing.

Absolutely, topol nails the role in such a charming and unique way with his movements, mannerisms and even just his amazing voice!
This was 20 years after the film and his energy didn’t dip in the slightest.
ICON.

Hes really the best at his art, God save him
Epic.
It’s like he didn’t age between the film and this
He aged perfectly into the role
Both he and Julie Andrews were almost exactly the same age, 55 when this was taped. Born about a month apart, I think.
Theres never gonna be another tevye.
🌹🙏🏻🌹
I based my performance of Tevye on him
He was in the IDF too. Rest in peace SSG 💔
