I'm so happy to share with you one of my favorite DIY's to date! All I wanted for Mother's Day was a window box and here's how we built it! Thank you for always following along with all of my creative home projects! You are a wonderful encouragement! 🥰
Thank you for sharing another great family project! You, husband, kids and Kathy/Cathy? all pulling together to create a wonderful Mother’s Day.💕 The colour combination looks very pretty. I’m guess you could hear me yelling all the way from Australia 😀 but I kept telling you to tease out the roots at the bottom of the plants. It gives them a better chance to bed in. Geraniums are a great choice, very hardy - don’t over water them. I know I’m very bossy but gardening, cooking and grandkids are my great passions.🦘🇦🇺
Hi Kaye lol I usually do tease out the roots, but these felt pretty loose to me already. Good to know about not over-watering them, thank you for the tip!
❤ This window box is SO awesomely beautiful…with or without flowers! Your husband and you ❤ did an amazing job of this! Really compliments your lovely home! ❤
My Dad made our window box when I grew up. I remember the pretty flowers my Mom would pick out at the local nursery. A couple of years my Dad grew the flowers from seeds. I liked window boxes so much, my husband bought us one with wrought iron braces to hold the box into place. My son for my birthday, takes me to the nursery to pick out some flowers for our window boxes. I think flowers in a window box just adds a nice touch to your home. I like the colour choices for your 💐, simple but elegant!
I love what you do in each video to your home. This is a beautiful window box. May you have joy and blessings throughout the years.. Otis 🐶 and me and Massachusetts❤
Wow! Y’all did a wonderful job! So fun to decorate for upcoming seasons. I can imagine little flags added for upcoming holidays and maybe faux pumpkins this fall. I love the character it adds 🥰
What a picture perfect addition to your home! It definitely looks like it has always been there. I can't help feeling that if the original owner were to see it, they'd be so impressed and wish they'd put a window box there, too! You chose really pretty flowers, as well. All my favorites! For years (before I moved), I used to plant huge pots on either side of the front door with just exactly that combination plus the green, spiky plant in the center that feels obligatory in big round pots! 😂 Occasionally I'd switch it up with red geraniums and white in place of the coral, still with the blue and the trailing plants. I think one year I did salmon geraniums with the white in place of the coral and then the same blue. I had impatiens in white plus a matching color to whatever geraniums I was using all along the curved walkway to the door. Gosh, I'm getting all nostalgic for that house! Or at least the flowers. Sorry for the ramble! I'm glad you had a great Mother's Day! Your hubby worked hard with you to give you the window box you wanted. So sweet! 💕
I loved reading you reminiscing about your beautiful flower arrangements! I am new to gardening, but its quickly becoming a big passion of mine! Glad you enjoyed the video!! Thank you for always saying hello in the comments
Your vision worked out perfect. I makes a statement that was needed right there. I am happy for you and your family , to have such a warm loving home. thanks Joyce
Turned out perfect! Loved the flowers! Our cedar window boxes have been up for 23 years and they are now needing to be replaced. We left ours natural! Cedar does last a very long time! I live in Minnesota. ❤
@@oldmaplehome here’s what I did. I bought the long skinny plastic plant boxes that fit inside of my cedar boxes. It wasn’t a perfect fit, I had to shave or cut the one side of the plastic box. 2 plastic long boxes per cedar box because mine are extra long like yours. I didn’t put dirt directly into the cedar box like you did. You may want to line yours. I also put rocks at the bottom of cedar box to help with drainage. The plastic boxes sit on top of the layer of rocks. Hope this helps! 💕 I just went and measured for you. Plastic boxes are about 35 inches long at the top (they taper a bit at bottom), my cedar boxes are about 70 inches long measuring from the inside edge to other inside edge. About a perfect fit!
*Just beautiful, Elizabeth and hubby❣️🥰 Small Flags 🇺🇸 tucked in the flower box for Memorial Day and Independence Day would look lovely - and tucked into your 2 topiary planters, too. 🥰🇺🇸 ❤🤍💙🇺🇸🌿*
I’ve never seen cedar for sale in UK 🇬🇧. ❤ With Cedar it doesn’t need lining then , that’s so cool and no knots like pine that can weep onto water based paint . Looks perfect well done .
Lovely flower box. I want to build two for the front of my cedar shingle house. I didn't see if you used a wood sealer on the inside of your box. I would definitely do that to extend the life of the box. It will be sitting with damp/wet soil for many years and you want it to last. I also plan to drill weep holes (and attach screening) on the bottom so excess water can drain away and plants won't get water-logged and rot.
I LOVE your box and the flowers you chose! How long did it take you to build and what was the cost for the wood and corbels? And did you use liners in the box?
Deadhead. Sometimes the stems are hard to break off. I would try to twist the stems if I didn’t have something with me to snip them off. The plants will produce more blooms and look great. I also would recommend adding a little plant food once a month. I just use Miracle Grow. I’m not a big gardener. I learned this by trial and error over time.
When about half the flower is brown follow the stem down and snip it off close to where it comes off the main stock. You will get a bushier plant with more flowers.
It looks great. Did you think about screwing into the rock pillars on the sides for extra support? If you would've went with red geraniums you probably would have been able to have seen them better since your paint is white.
Looks so pretty. But I was wondering if you lined the inside. A sheet metal liner with drilled holes for drainage would really increase the lifetime of a wooden window box.
Love the planter box. But I don’t think the red bricks are very old. I like the look but that old of brick would show wear and fading. They may be from the 60’s or so, while your house is older.
Just saying I’ve seen and looked up 100 yr or more old, red brick. They are not perfect and should have many flaws in shape size and color. Easily looked up and see how they were made. 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️

Nothing says home like a window box. It’s so charming and inviting. Yours turned out just beautiful. Beautiful verse too.

Nice window box
Looks awesome!
You could use the plastic inserts to protect the wood or a plastic liner. We did add drainage holes. It was an easy project and I love it so much!
Great window box. Wood rots in a couple of years. Wondering if you lined the box with tin or plastic? Love the flowers you chose. Great feature.
Thank you Melinda! I bought those plastic inserts, but sadly they were a tad too wide. I think I will add lining in the fall :)
Love it looks beautiful I supscribe to your Chanel today God bless you all ❤️👵🏻
Welcome!
I LOVE your box and the flowers you chose! How long did it take you to build and what was the cost for the wood and corbels?
And did you use liners in the box?
Remove the geraniums that have brown spots on the blossoms and it encourages the plant to produce new blossoms.
Dead head or just remove the brown petals?

Very pretty I hope u put drain holes in ur box.
Sure did!
It looks great. Did you think about screwing into the rock pillars on the sides for extra support? If you would've went with red geraniums you probably would have been able to have seen them better since your paint is white.
It’s very secure in the mortar. Maybe I’ll do red one year! The white geraniums pop nicely off the red brick.
Looks so pretty. But I was wondering if you lined the inside. A sheet metal liner with drilled holes for drainage would really increase the lifetime of a wooden window box.
Thank you! I purchased plastic planter inserts, but they were too small... so I'll have to figure something else out in the fall.

How to clean windows?
How to build a window box.
@@oldmaplehome 🤣🤣 no. I mean... hahahah! How do you clean the window right behind it after making this flower pot? 😁
🥰❤️✅
Thank you for your comment Ann!
Love the planter box. But I don’t think the red bricks are very old. I like the look but that old of brick would show wear and fading. They may be from the 60’s or so, while your house is older.
They look just like the brick on the house I grew up in, built in the 1920s and like the brick on my daughter's house built in the 1910s. 🤷🏼♀️
Our home was built before 1900 and we have photos of it from then with the same brick 😃
Just saying I’ve seen and looked up 100 yr or more old, red brick. They are not perfect and should have many flaws in shape size and color. Easily looked up and see how they were made. 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
@@catfishm.1361
Evidently the brick you saw was much older. 100 years now is only the 1920s.
@@Lucinda_Jackson Supposed to be before 1900
Surly brackets woukd if been better...good job though
It’s been almost a year and it’s holding up beautifully 😃
