i know this video is 2 years old but it may help someone. If you find your z18xe 1.8l running poorly/ hunting idle, and it almost sounds like the engine is misfiring on a cold start, then smoothen out. Its most likely the Fuel Evap valve is stuck and needs to replaced or the valve's hose is cracked, causing a vacuum leak. This can also throw sensor codes like MAF and oxygen sensors, when in reality is just the fuel valve that comes off the throttle body. Good luck and check your coolant lines
hello mate great videos wifes got the same car, been to moon and back been such a reliable car , just recent and dangerous to drive the car accelerates by itself only when moving revs fine when parked any ideas faulty ecu ???
picked up the same car recently, same 1.8 engine, took the throttle body off after first watching this video and the body was filthy and the small hole was also blocked, took a good while to get it cleaned using stiff wire and plenty of carb cleaner but finally got there! ive watched all your videos on this car and the way you explain things step by step and the camera views really helps,i now plan to do the timing belt in the bear future now i know how its done! great videos, thanks
what a great good video, very clearly explained and filmed! I have the same problem and will try it tomorrow. my thanks are great. greetings from the Netherlands.
Good video, well done , nice and clear instructions. ,I had a vauxhall once ,rough idle , turned out to be a 1/2 block cat, it just started to fall to bits internally , that was a strange one...
Now with most of these model engines the throttle body is gummed up. Can you explain what stops the oil coming from the engine as they don’t seem to have a pcv valve or how to set up a catch can to reduce the oil and stop it from blocking up the hoses. Or is there maintenance to be done inside the rocker cover to ensure the oil doesn’t leave the engine. Thanks.

What a great video? Got a maf sensor problem, and after replacing it the problem persists. Someone advised me to have a look at cleaning throttle body. Does anyone have other recommendations?
Hi martin, thanks very much for your astra videos. I'm working on a zafira A 03 and I have had the same idling issues. So I've found this very useful thanks 😊 👍
Nice work Martin I had a blocked rocker cover breather pipe, that was the problem with my ventra years ago same engine as yours it was totally blocked in the rocker cover itself
It was pretty gummed up in there,I have a vectra with a z18xer engine which is different but i think they share the same problems with the thermostat housing which is electrically heated and they seize open,a sure way to tell is the temp gauge drops to 0 when on a long drive but around town can't tell and heater goes cold.Yeah suck eggs i know but sometimes this can be missed and with affect engine performance and fuel economy. Very noticeable in the winter but summer you can hardly tell. Just a thought.
Them two pipes in throttle body ,one goes to water pump one goes to expansion bottle only for one purpose, to bring hot water to throttle body and warm it up in cold weather ..
Basically it's an air vent. The throttle body equivalent of a bunged up nose with the same effect. If one of them is blocked, it could affect fuel, air or fuel/air mixture volume delivery within the throttle body & onwards to the engine & a likely cause for any / the rough running in this case.
Martin I have a short term fuel trim of 15.6% and a long term fuel trim of 8.6%. Have you had any problems like this on your vauxhall? These figures are at idle so I am going to rev the engine tomorrow to see if the short term fuel trim falls, if it does I think I have a vacuum leak.
you will be surprised what problems a dirty throttle body will do, was the fuel filter even doing anything, with it been fitted the wrong way, who knows.
Hello! I would really appreciate your help if possible I ve been struggling with some jerky acceleration and deceleration for some years now I think a few years ago a mechanic sprayed some cleaner in my throttle body and it was working nicely I was driving a lot at that time (20.000 miles per year so after a while I had it again) I cleaned myself many times but it always looks clean and I never have any error codes but still runs jerky What could it be?
@@retrorestore hey thanks for the reply I have an obd tester There are no codes but I ll recheck I checked the coil pack today I changed it 3 years ago and still looks good I managed to take my throttle body out and took the vacuum hose off to see if the two sides communicate (where the small hole is) And yes they do I also have a new egr and a new lambda o2 sensor
Hey man love your videos! I have an borth american Astra H with the 1.8 engine (Z18XER) and it has a P0068 check engin which is mass airflow colleration. Would cleaning my MAF get rid of this code?
Best to plug a diagnostic scanner in to see what codes have come up bud. It could affect other sensors trying to compensate to the body being out of range.
As far as I am aware this engine does not have an EGR valve. It does have an intake manifold air control solenoid that is often the cause of a lean mixture.
I seem to remember that when cleaning it is important not to open the butterfly valve. Might be worth mentioning, as I note you didn't open it. Just as a heads up for others.

Well done.

Very useful video. Experiencing hunting running on my 1.6, guess the thottle bodies are similar, I'll be giving it a go in the morning. Big thank you.
Good spot there Martin, very easy to miss that. Loving this series, keep em coming 👍
Thanks 👍
Loving the videos Martin, your step by step hands on approach is better than any Haynes manual. Thankyou
Thanks 👍
Thanks for the Astra episodes Martin! 😜
I guess I'm kind of off topic but do anyone know of a good site to stream newly released movies online ?
@Paxton Zayd Flixportal :)
@Weston Genesis Thank you, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) Appreciate it!!
@Paxton Zayd no problem =)
Beautiful work boss..it can't get any more easier than how you have explained it..
Thanks 👍
Legend mate, you helped me fix my car after the mechanics gave up.
Nice one Michael, Well done bud.
Perfectly explained, great video going to do this to my 1.6 meriva.

Nice job, The maf should give fluctuating readings on idle

Thanks 👍

Another great job Martin good to see you remembered your gloves this time lol 👍👍👍👍
Absolutely lol
Top work as always Martin .
I still think it would loom better without the body kit ( tacky)
I wonder how much that job would have cost at the garage or dealers Martin.
Any job at a garage is dear Dave lol
Not sure if your cards link is working mate, each time you mentioned it and pointed, nothing was showing.
Great video mate 👍
Top job and well worth doing. Looking forward to the next one.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice work Martin. Thanks for sharing this with us take care

If the idle is hunting try the idle air control valve...
Fantastic work buddy 👍🏻

Yes they all suffer with the thermostat being stuck open. Both the Vectra ans Astra both have this issue. Its a £55.00 thermostat as well .
So clean very helpful video thank you
Top video. Did you check that the hose leading to the blocked port on the throttle body? I had an Astra F that had a full vacuum pipe totally clogged
Yes I did
Them two pipes in throttle body ,one goes to water pump one goes to expansion bottle only for one purpose, to bring hot water to throttle body and warm it up in cold weather ..
How would the a small clogged hole affect the engine?
Basically it's an air vent.
The throttle body equivalent of a bunged up nose with the same effect.

@@retrorestore the label just above engine bulkhead on the Astra just curious to its meaning.

Could be a coil pack, You need to get an OBD11 tester plugged in to see if there are any codes.
@@retrorestore hey thanks for the reply
I have an obd tester

Its best to just change it but you could give it a try.
was that a trouser cough at 3:27 lol
No it was Sharon's brother making silly noises.
Hi Martin, What did you clean the hole with inside the throttle body? Mine is clogged up bad!
I showed that in the video bud. welding tip files and carb spray
@@retrorestore cheers Martin, I'll get myself a set and give it another go.
I cleared throttle body on my 1.8 Astra, than i got lean exhaust and throttle body failure,i cleaned it with brake cleaner
The one that was blocked was that the oil breather ??
One of them, yes
Cheers mate, great help, poxy car playing up on Xmas day. Of course it does.
No problem 👍
Another spot on video 👌👍
Thanks 👍
Was that Chris with the cameo role? 😂
Finding that blocked hole should improve the running,
Haha, yes it was Jason, I couldn't cut that bit out but he done loads more noises lol
omg that sounds really nice better then what it was mate
Martin are you having log sheds like the one already up or metal ?
No, we'll build our own. These ones were pre made.
Good vlog martin

Can this issue cause the spanner light to come on? Cheers

The throttle body was gunked up. It will be the EGR that's caused it.
As far as I am aware this engine does not have an EGR valve. It does have an intake manifold air control solenoid that is often the cause of a lean mixture.
No Michael. not in this case.
Where is the face pulling parrot man . Good job.

might do mine now. what was the pipe that connected to the hole that was blocked for? is that the crankcase breather?
Yes it was the smaller of the two
