Urdu Bazar: The Slow Death Of Delhi’s Urdu Literary Hub

  • Urdu Bazar Delhi: Barely 40 years ago, almost 80 bookstores lined up from Jagath Cinema to the entrance to Matia Mahal Road. Now, with barely six bookstores left, there is less discussion about Ghalib or Faiz’s poetry and a keener interest in making a profit from food joints. In front of Maktaba Jamia, one of the largest and most reputed bookstores in Urdu Bazar is a new and upcoming kebab shop. Booksellers in Urdu Bazar admit to the decline in business. Yet, a handful of them continue to adapt to the changing conditions to protect their history and family heirloom.

Question arises internet measurely caters and focusses on English language but publishing books in English is still higher than any other language around the globe this status was once enjoyed by Urdu language in this subcontinent! Why Urdu printing is declining this is some how due the biased and ignoring attitude of the state of India but measure responsibility of this pathetic state of affair rests on Urdu speaking people themselves for not having interest in Urdu literature poetry and script if they wish a serious need of Urdu printing and publishing will definitely be restored in present time muslim India which comprises almost 20 to 30percent of the Indian population which is a very suitable percentage for doing business of Urdu publications so don't blame govt teach your children Urdu script and creat in them the interest and love to read and write beside talking in this most beautiful language on this planet earth! The Urdu language!

Sanskrit is an ancient language. It's identity and existence is being preserved in the heart of every child that goes to school. In simple words, it's compulsory to learn the language from sixth to eighth. You would know if you paid attention in school. 😃

sansikrat is now a dead language like hibro in Israel but both are paid a deliberate unnecessary and unreasonable attention in both Israel and India even then they both still unable to make hibro and sansikrat popularized! While Urdu is a vibrant agile and lively language rich in culture literature art music poetry cenima and drama industry in pakistan MashaAllah is flourishing in the fullest color and distinction with script and accent acceptable to all and in India too gaining attention gradually of the masses in learning the script too along with enjoying the status of lingua franca across the India!

@@FaridUlIslam-co2ys i completely understand that sir. my point was that urdu is a language that we, even as "hindi" speakers, use but are not taught about in schools nor is the language being taught elsewhere unlike sanskrit which is taught across india. urdu isnt even a muslim language. it is very much a part of the indian heartland and should be encouraged all across north west at least. urdu is a beautiful language with even better literature that should be preserved.
