For all the problems I have with the film and there are many, I must admit to watching the film, 7 or 8 times. The acting and dialogue is mixed probably due to trying to fit every one's story together, whichit can feel very forced at times. But I can forgive the film because the music is great and the last 30 minutes is a joy to watch because we get past all the story motivations and it is just pure positivity as we finish the journey. Also the cinematography is probably better than Mark suggests, it isn't going to win Oscar's but is pleasant.
Some may go on about the connection between the walk and church but this didn't bother me and isn't the major part of any main character motivations.

reminds me a bit of a film by Zhang Yimou called Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles.

Awww, gee, guys. Just watched this movie. I'm as cynical an old atheist as they come and I loved it. Sheen's ever changing hair was only mildly distracting...

I am not sure what all of the brutal criticism are of this film. Will it be showcased by film professors as how to create the 'perfect' film as art? No. However, it is a breath of fresh air in a claustrophobic space of pretentious drivel as a tale of transformation, humility, and grief.

A book describing this pilgrimage, written by a television entertainer/comedian, was on German bestseller lists for something like two years. There's an apparent resurgence of fluffy spiritualism. In my opinion, the Church hijacks natural human feelings to draw people into a dogmatized channel, leading to financial and political profit through membership and memorabilia sales.

@moeezS In my country, the church directly influences lawmaking. These are laws that have a direct impact on my life, week after week.
Besides, have you never minded anything outside your immediate daily life? My empathy urges me to comment and act on things that influence other people's lives negatively.

@richandiben With respect, that's a tremendously foolish and ignorant way in which to choose your viewing.

@moeezS How about the millions in donations that come in each time the Pope visits a place of pilgrimage? How about nearly half a million Euros found by the French tax authority in the personal bank account of Lourdes's managing priest (who makes no more than 9,000 Euros a year officially)? The certificate of pilgrimage is officially handed out by the Church - but only to people who profess true faith (this matters because in Spain, some employers will ask for proof of such journeys).
