How to Dry and Preserve Basil

  • Drying Basil is the best way to preserve. I first submerge basil in water to get rid of any pests and then wash basil. I make bunches and hang basil to dry. Hanging basil this way aerated the basil and helps the basil to dry faster. Hanging basil also keeps basil out of reach of bugs and Pests. Drying basil on a surface can cause dampness and mold.

    For smaller you can also use a brown paper lunch bag for drying. Good for keeping the dust off. I still tie the stems when I place them in the bag as it makes it easier to transfer to a mason jar for storage after drying; and then I crumble before using.

    • @willkarn9750
      @willkarn9750 4 года назад +2

      No one ever replied to you so I'll give it a go. You want to allow the plant to grow so that it has atleast three sections where the leaves form. To harvest you will make a slightly slanted cut just above the leaves of the lowest, or the second lowest section. This gives you a nice little plant with a stem and one section ( or two) of leaves to continue to grow. The neat thing is where you cut the plant it will grow two or more new stems that will grow even more basil. Repeat this every time you get three sections of leaves above the cuts. Eventually you will have a nice bushy basil plant producing plenty to use fresh and to dry.

  • @natejones6700
    @natejones6700 3 месяца назад

    One thing to know- don’t leave it in the water for very long or the stems will soak up the water and the leaves will wilt and you’ll have to pull them off and throw them away. If you start this and then leave it for an hour or two that’s enough to mess up your basil. Don’t leave it!! (Speaking from experience here)

    nasty air dust... I don't wanna eat it. Use oven instead!

  • @CerberusBindeweed
    @CerberusBindeweed 3 года назад +1

    Not a good method at all.
    First of all, when you cut basil, if you hang it and expose it to the sun, the essential oils found within the leaves will evaporate rapidly and oxidize giving you a less fragrant and lest pure tasting product.
    Also by introducing water the way you have done, can cause the basil to mould and hanging it outdoors after rinsing just defeats the purpose.
    Traditionally if you want to "wash" your herbs from dust, simply give the plants a good spray of water the night before and the following day during warm weather and before the sun has reached its peek, the water should hopefully be evaporated and this would then be the ideal time to harvest the plant. Harvest as quickly as possible because as soon as the plant is cut, any exposure to the sun afterwards will cause the plant to loose its vibrancy, colour and volatile oils rapidly.
    Take the plants indoors and hang them in a dry and dark place ensuring the small bunches of basil are spaced a bit from each other for aeration. Leave this to hang for about a week or 2 checking the basil to make sure there are no signs of potential mould.
    As basil holds quite a bit of water, after a week or two, take down the basil leaves and separate the individual leaves from the stalk and speak them out on a drying screen. A drying screen is virtually a window fly screen that you lay your herbs on in one layer and have raised so air can reach all around the plant. Leave like this till completely dry.
    Alternatively, a more modern way is to use a dehydrator at very low temperatures.
    Oven drying methods are not recommended for herbs as heat negatively affects the volatile oils within said herbs.
