I have such a similar experience with music. My parents bought me a guitar and signed me up for lessons in 6th grade and I never really started playing until I was 22. And now music is my entire life

I love how Joe was like hey man there's nothing wrong with you. When luke was worrying about how he doesn't get super excited over things that basically anyone normal would. But also he loves those moments where he sees his crowd fully engaged with his music. Luke combs def a regular dude who made it big and didn't let it go to his head.

Repent and trust in Jesus. He's the only way to Heaven. We've all sinned and deserve Hell. Sins like lying, lusting, etc. Repent and trust only in Jesus, and you will be saved! You can be saved because he took the punishment for our sins on himself when he died on the cross, just like someone can pay your speeding fine in court, and you get off free.

My dad is an amazing guitar player well known in MN. He always told me to learn to read sheet music bc he couldn't. Similar to Luke. I can read and am an okay musician across handful of instruments and singing, but nothing compared to him and guitar. He's got perfect pitch. Love this convo.

A lot of great musicians started by learning by ear. Eddie van Halen, for example. He started by playing piano when he was young and was great at it, but didn't learn to read music even when taking music lessons. His teacher was teaching it with music notation, but Eddie played all of the pieces by ear anyway. His teacher discovered he couldn't read when he asked him to turn the music sheets for the teacher as the teacher played a piece and Eddie failed at the task. However, I believe it took a few years for his teacher to discover that, and Eddie had already won a few national piano competitions for kids at that point. :-) 1.o0

I get what he means about reading music. I can read music, but it doesn’t come easy. I always found that it was easier for me to mimic sounds and rhythms than to pick them up from notes on a sheet.

  • @Bee-tj8gc

I can guitar and piano and also gave up on reading music.
If I'm not constantly playing a song after learning it though I forget how to play it.
I won't ever totally forget the songs and it's easier to relearn once I learned it the first time

  • @JumperAce

The not learning to read music thing happened to me too. My mom had me in violin lessons when I was in pre-school. Expecting me to learn sheet music at that age was just not going to happen. I was learning notes like learning new words, just by listening. I joined orchestra a year early and was first chair the next year. I would fake playing the first times through each piece so I could just listen to the music, and then just knew how to play it. Hated violin tho, quit to learn tennis and other stuff through my teens. Now I'm tone deaf and don't even hear lyrics when listening to the radio. It's weird

*Gotta be honest - I hated that damn 6' apart song..* But, you speaking about your OCD with such honesty -- something in the universe shifted. I played it for 16 year old son (who has suffered with exactly the brand of tortured OCD you described); we got to the end where you described what you've done to overcome the loop - he looked up at me as if the Lord, himself, turned on a f**king high beam light.. and was pointing it right in front of him.
I haven't seen him walk with his shoulders rolled back, as if he might have a chance in hell to overcome those demons -- ever.
Dude -- thank you, brother. From the bottom of my heart. I might even listen to that covid hitter, instead of making fun of ya, the next time it comes on the radio.

I said I would try and he handed me the song sheets.
I looked it over and I knew some of the requests, humming as I looked over the music.
The Chaplain laughed and said,"You're a note reading Campbellite!"
Having grown up in an acapela Church of Christ, I had learned to read notes because singing was easy and memory was good back then.
I remember every inflection of all the music I absorbed throughout my life and I don't understand any of it.
I play guitar and some keyboard by ear and can only get by personally with guitar in open "C" tuning.

I have played the drums for 32 years now. I self taught beginning when I was 16 and it just came naturally.
Through the years I tried over and over to learn stringed instruments and it just wouldn't take, I mean at all.
Several years ago I borrowed a guitar from a guy that I had taught to play the drums. He also plays bass and guitar and had attempted to teach me guitar.
Long story short. I tossed learning chords or even any known songs out the window and I taught myself a song that I was hearing in my head.
When I returned the guitar a couple of weeks later he asked me to show him what I had learned so I played him my song.
He was absolutely floored and just said "Do you even realize what you just did" and then proceeded to explain.
Apparently the way that what I wrote, and played very well, walked up and down the strings and up and down the neck covered the pentatonic scale in such a way that he said he was still incapable of doing after thousands of hours of learning and playing. Go figure.
So what I learned was that I can play beautiful complex music on stringed instruments if it my own music and I play/learn what feels and sounds right to me.
I even self taught myself on the banjo, but my kids accidentally broke my banjo while wrestling and I never replaced it.

I would say it's more ADD than dyslexia. I've been playing jazz/blues/fusion for 30 years and I'm really good (not to float my own boat) and I can barely grasp music theory. I know the basics and I can read music because I grew up playing the sax, which is just single note reading on the treble clef, but when you start getting into modulation and theory, I get completely lost. The thing is though, players like Jimi and EVH didn't know how to read music. They had a grasp and an ear for music. What makes them great though, is that their playing didn't fall under any rules, because they didn't know "the rules". Most famous musicians and singers could not teach at a high level (such as a Berkley professor), they are just naturally talented and their actual style and abilities get them to where they are.

    Luke combs
    Before I met Luke,
I had already won an Emmy and worked with artists. Trace Adkins, Michael Ray, Cole Swindell, Craig Campbell, Craig, Morgan, lonestar Randy Houser.
I Produced and engineered and Mixed and Vocal coaching for the first three songs that Luke ever recorded in his life
Including the song that they added Upchurch to
    Can I get an outlaw
    That I produced for Luke
I hired Musicians that ended up being on his number one smash Hurricane.
He hadn’t recorded any songs “ever”
I had modest gear that I upgraded, and he came back and recorded three more songs
And then I upgraded more gear and he came back and recorded six songs that I produced and engineered and Vocal coaching
That ended up on his first five times platinum album
When I met Luke, he had awesome instincts, rhythmically, and Tone
But I taught him a lot of the tricks of singing in the studio that I learned from
Seth Riggs when I was in Los Angeles for five years, and he taught Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder
Prince Ray Charles, Barbara Streisand, Hall & Oates, David Coverdale, Sebastian Bach, and too many others to list.
And then I moved to Nashville and studied voice with
    Renee Grant, Williams,
who taught Christina Aguilera, Garth Brooks, and all of the super stars of the 90s and early 2000s before she passed away
    Both of those Vocal Coaches
    being iconic
I shared all of that information and taught Luke how to sing in the studio
But his instincts were already on the way to greatness
