  • What is The Pygmalion Effect (or Rosenthal Effect)? That’s the question we answer in this video tutorial.
Read the complete guide about The Pygmalion Effect here: jeroen-de-fland...
The Pygmalion Effect (or Rosenthal effect - Jacobson) is a fascinating leadership phenomenon. The Pygmalion Effect - and counterpart Golem Effect - impact your performance.
When we expect low performance, our expectations kick-start a negative spiral that leads to low performance. “Underachievers grow accustomed to getting by with minimally acceptable performance simply because nothing more is expected of them.”
Just by replacing a management style of negative comments and neglect with a ‘can do’ approach, it was possible to turn the negative spiral into a positive one for over 50 percent. Imagine the power of The Pygmalion Effect if we apply a ‘can do’ management style to everyone in the team.

The best way to take advantage of this effect on a training course like mentioned is to say there is going to be a division by skill groups like mentioned earlier. However the groups are told to be segregated to different areas as the difference in skill group requires a special set of terrain this way the soldiers do not meet each other. The catch is, every set of group is said to be of the highest skill group. Thus the Pygmalion effect shall hypothetically increase the overall quality of soldiers of course it will take into consideration the social dynamics and type of approach necessary to gain optimal results.

I would wonder about how the Pygmalion Effect correlates with the performance of 1st round draft picks in the NFL. It seems like a lot of 1st rounders are really built up to be superstars in the league, and a large percentage of them just fizzle out with little impact. Then you have a lot of guys who went in the 3rd or 4th rounds who end up being quality players for many years.

Yeah imagine a;l the brats and scummy kids, I’m just saying parents need to give the kids a firm hand and maybe a fast one every once and a while and not let them be spoiled

It might also be difficult for these leaders to go against the judgement of their management. If their management told them, these are high performers, would they feel comfortable enough to say, ‘well I worked with them for 16 weeks and it was a great dissapointment’. The same for low performers that did an outstanding job. In other words, my dearest management you got poor judgement skills. Noone in the army would ever go against the judgement of their senior rankers.

In the myth, Pygmalion carved a statue that he ended up falling in love with. When making offerings to Aphrodite, he secretly wished for a woman that was just like the statue. When he got home, he found the statue had come to life. The psychological phenomenon is named after this story.
