I still remember the first time I watched the Shawshank Redemption. Me and my mom were watching TV and she was flicking channels, I was about to go to bed cause I had school the next day, my mom saw the Shawshank Redemption was about to come on and I said I'd never seen it. She then next to forced me to stay up and watch it and I can't say I've ever blamed her.

MD is 3 hours of various scenes from different films thrown together (at least it seems like it) with no rhyme or reason and most of his films are failed pilots.

This is my own personal Top 10.
Though it may seem like a strange list, these movies connected with me the most.
    10. It Follows
I love horror movies and I have a fear of being followed. So this was the movie I've been waiting for.
    9. American Beauty
This was the stunningly beautiful character study I didn't realized I needed in my life.
    8. The Matrix
I know every shot, special effect, and fight choreography in this movie. It blows me away even to this day.
    7. Back to the Future
Everybody loves this movie. I can watch it 1.21 times and never get tired of it.
    6. The Dark Knight
This is one of, if not, the best superhero movie of all time. On my list it's my favorite DC movie.
    5. Napoleon Dynamite
The movie of my generation. In terms of comedy, it's the movie that's shaped my sense of humor.
    4. The Wizard of Oz
A true classic in every sense of the word and my all time favorite fantasy.
    3. The Avengers
Definitely the best movie I've seen in theaters. On my list it's my favorite Marvel movie.
    2. Toy Story
Animation is my life. So many movies could have been in it's place, but this is the one that beats them all.
    1. Forrest Gump
It took me a while to realize it, but Forrest Gump encapsulates all the qualities I look for in a great movie. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry, it makes you cheer, and it even makes you think. I can watch it a million times and never get tired of it. I don't care how overrated people think it is. This is the best movie I've seen.
P.S. I'm a huge fan of Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, but I just cannot separate the the movies.

    *My top 10*
    10. La La Land
Never been a fan of musicals or romance. However, this film was simply astonishing. Beautifully shot and directed a brilliantly executed film.
    9. Shawshank Redemption
Would be a disgrace to not have this on a top 10 best movies of all time. Near enough faultless and a timeless classic to say the least.
    8. No country for old men
It was one of a kind. So much suspense and tension in it, great story telling and acting all round. Will always be one of my all time favourites.
    7. Your Name (kimi no nawa)
I am not an anime fan at all. I have watched a lot of Miyazaki films and even them have never got me intrigued into anime. However, "Your Name" was amazing. I would highly recommend even if you are not an anime fan, if you are a true movie lover and animation lover, you will find huge enjoyment in this.
    6. The Matrix
My all time favourite full on Sci Fi movie. The effects and visuals they pulled off at the time was breath taking to say the least. So unique at the time and will always hold up to time. An amazing film with great action scenes and an idea that turned out to be revolutionary.
    5. The Godfather
Was a hard decision between this and the sequel but I had to give it to the first for the original screenplay. Every actor was on point at all times, the story telling was spectacular and it kept you intrigued throughout the entire film.
    4. Forrest Gump
Maybe overrated to some. To me an enjoyment in every way possible. You find happiness, sadness and it gives you an experience like no other film could ever do. One of a kind and could never be replicated.
    3. The dark knight
Huge comic book fan, so had to include a comic book movie. What other comic book movie could top the dark knight? Heath ledger gave one of the best and most iconic portrayals of a comic character, and film character in general, of all time. Changed the superhero genre all together.
    2. Empire Strikes Back
I am a massive Star Wars fan and it was close between this and A New Hope. However, I can only imagine the shock in theatres during the "I am your father" scene. This film stands up to any movie ever made and will remain an icon. Empire Strikes Back is the perfect example of great directing, ideas, effects and story telling.
    1. Pulp Fiction
As my number one I chose Pulp Fiction because I am a huge Tarantino fan. I was contemplating other QT movies to put in the list but I have never enjoyed a film more than Pulp Fiction. I can watch this in any mood at any time and never get bored. Story telling in movies just don't get better than this. With a great score, story and cast this will be my favourite movie and probably will never be topped.
    Honourable Mentions:
    Casablanca
    The Prestige
    A New Hope
    2001
    Bladerunner
    Inception
    Django
    Reservoir dogs
    Inglorious Basterds
    Fight Club
(A lot of other films but I've seen a lot of films and can't name them all)
    THIS LIST IS MY OPINION

Honorable mentions to The Matrix, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Shining, the entire Harry Potter franchise and The Avengers.
    10. Kill Bill - Fucking phenomenal, and my personal favourite Tarantino work. The music, the camera work, the over the top fighting and characters, I loved it.
    9. Whiplash - Everything Adam/Plumpy said is true. It's great. Go watch it.
    8. Terminator 2 - Wow... This film... I've watched it a dozen times and it's still great. It's Arnie in his prime, at his best, with the best writing he ever worked with. Every scene is breathtaking and Robert Patrick does a great job of making the T1000 feel like it's an unstoppable force and that it's only a matter of time before it accomplishes it's mission. And Sarah's dream of the nuclear holocaust gives me chills every single time. It's so terrifying.
    7. The Dark Knight - This film is the best superhero film ever made. Bale at his best, Ledger at his best. And I had thought going in, having avoided every trailer, every talking point, everything about the film, that Ledger couldn't pull off the Joker. I was so so so so so so so wrong. Legitimately terrifying and unpredictable. He stole the show. Heath closes his role in the film with the line: "I feel like you and I are destined to do this forever." I would have watched you do it, you beautiful beautiful bastard.
    6. Aladdin - My favourite Disney film and a masterclass in cartoon storytelling. As an animator myself, the animation is STILL great today, and I can't wait to see the live action version. Robin Williams steals the show as the Genie, obviously, but every member of the cast is great. I love Jafar to death, not my favourite Disney villain (that honour belonging to Scar in the Lion King) but Jafar does an amazing job of making you hate him.
    5. Interstellar - I don't care, I fucking love this film. I went to see it in my local cinema knowing literally nothing other than that Christopher Nolan had directed it and it blew my expectations out of the water. The stakes are huge and the physics of it all make sense.
    4. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back - Everything the middle movie in a trilogy should aspire to be. Fantastic in it's own right, and raising the stakes for the final film. And the twist! It blew me away the first time I watched and I felt what Luke felt. It's gutwrenching to discover that your greatest enemy is your family.
    3. Dead Poets Society. "O Captain, my Captain." I love Robin Williams' work, and it was a toss up between Good Will Hunting and this one for this spot. I love this film so much and if I could only choose to show my future children one movie off this list, it would be this. It's heartbreakingly beautiful and extremely emotional.
    2. Casablanca. Yes. Just... yes. It's definitely one of the greatest ever made and the fact that it's stood the test of time as well as it has proves it.
    1. The Shawshank Redemption - It's the best. film. EVER. made. Gloriously acted, sensationally written and it's just... fucking perfect. I can't praise this film enough and I believe it is essential viewing for any sentient being on this planet. If aliens ever come, they should judge our society based on how good the Shawshank Redemption is.

    10. Nightcrawler
This film is essentially a dark comedy and I love it! The film is so interesting and smart and jake gyllenhall's performance is the best. I love how Lou becomes insane till the end. It shows the narcissism of the media and what it takes to get to the top
    8. The iron giant
I've never seen an animated film with such charm and an emotional punch that it leaves u guessing. Then you ask yourself how is this film not have as much praise as other animated films.
    7. The Lego Movie
This is the smartest and funniest animated film ever made! The film talks about existence and capitalism and movies in general! Best animated film ever made.
    6. Prometheus
I don't understand why this film gets so much hate. People complain of those plot holes and script issues but there aren't. Back in 2012 mainstream wasn't familiar with confusing smart sci fi films. The scientist dudes were pretty stupid but everything other than that is amazing!
    5. Nocturnal animals
This film is so ambitious and amazing. How it plays off of 3 stories and connects them wonderfully. The movie is basically a metaphor in love and art and this film owns that shit
    4. 2001: a space odyssey
So people call this film boring and I totally agree. But idk I have fun watching a ship glide through space for 30 minutes with blue Danube as the music choice! The film is so ambitious and amazing I've watched it a million times
    3. The dark knight
This is the best superhero movie ever made and even an amazing movie to. This movie has one of the best villains and best scenes. The performance by Heath ledger was amazing. Everything was amazing!
    2. Fight club
This is such an unconventional film so when it hits that end you rethink everything you've seen and the film is so smart. I cant understand what the metaphor or message is but that makes it even more awesome
    1. The shawshank redemption
THIS MOVIE IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE AND SHOULD'VE WON BEST PICTURE! The ending is awesome, the writing is awesome, the directing is awesome, the characters are awesome, and the soundtrack is awesome. I will never forget this one....

Tokyo Godfathers is a cool and unexpected choice. Have you seen any of the original film versions of the story? (1916, 1936 [Chester Morris], and 1948 [John Wayne])

I haven't seen the original, but I rank the '36 and '48 ones pretty closely, with '36 edging ahead. Wayne can do no wrong (he's The Duke!), whereas Morris is surly and even shocking in his apathy. Very different takes. The '36 one feels much more gritty and realistic.

+Bryce Bitter Your list is a good list. It really expresses your taste - with an emphasis on morally ambiguous characters and hard crime (the majority of the movies) blended with themes that could be considered somewhat episodic either thru the protagonists inner journey (Momento, A Clockwork Orange, American Psycho) or more classically episodic (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings). Many of the movies are both internally and externally episodic - like No Country for Old Men, Pulp Fiction and The Departed. Your honorable mentions fall into this too.
