Marvin was devastated when Tami.passed away so young from her illness. She and Marvin were pure magic. This song is Timeless and has been a hot recorded by so many artists including Diana Ross and her version . This one as the original is just simply the best.
She's a beauty. Tammi probably meant everything to him, career wise and otherwise.

She was magic. And so was he. In fact, Marvin Gaye has the best pure voice I have ever heard in my life. This is a top 10 all time song in my book. It grabs you early and never lets you go.

I'm not necessarily a Christian, but if I was, I'm real certain the gun panty equipment wouldn't be glorified or brandished. Of course I'm an ample dude not in fear, but I also don't run around threatening anyone. I'll speak up when I'm being trampled on. But I don't make trouble. Times are hard enough.

Always loved this one. Their voices match so well. Marvin Gaye lived for 2 years in Ostend Belgium (My country). That's where he recorded parts of a new album. And he got to know some people in music business here. Sad about beautiful Tammy - They both died too young.

Oh guys, you’re killin it today! In 1967, when this song peaked, i was 13…and had such a crush on Ms Terrell! Like many, I was heartbroken when she passed. What a timeless tune, penned by Ashford & Simpson! Contrary to popular opinion, there was no romantic connection between the two, just one of many great duets.

Oh man, that last segment, from Johnny Carson's show, was magical, despite the flubs. My guess is that was Carson's studio band, led by Doc Severinsen, faking the instrumentals to a brand new song in their old school big band way and missing the mark. But Gaye and Terrell step up to the challenge right off when it becomes apparent they are going to have to front the entire song with only a modicum of support from the band. Doc was a strange dude. I believe he was one of SINatra's Mafia servants. Sinatra tried to use his pal Barry Goldwater's fake liberal image on race, but SINatra was KKK as it gets telling "N" jokes with his Mafia buddies to prove he belonged. Doc had lots of black musicians he got along with, but my bet is he was envious of more talented musicians, especially if black. But hard to say. Sinatra + Mafia ran venues and record pressing companies. He killed early Elvis because Elvis got more popular than Sinatra, which he couldn't handle. That's why Hollywood put Elvis in all those terrible movies. So they could bypass Sinatra's Mafia boyfriends who were trying to contain Elvis songs. The movies were terrible and lip syncing embarrassments, but in that cheesy era, it worked to get Elvis out of SINatra's grip. Some day Americans will all know the true horror show Sinatra was. One of the worst humans this country ever produced. A complete coward.

Woah, now you're talking. I've buzzed off your reactions to Led Zeppelin, Motorhead etc but, Motown, Stax and the lesser known American soul labels, were my first musical love. There's nothing quite like 60's soul sounds to get your feet tapping.

Tammi's death, in fact, was part of the inspiration for Marvin Gaye to write his legendary album: What's Going On? - It was commonly accepted that he NEVER got over her death.
[What's Going On? JUST preceded Stevie Wonder's: Music Of My Mind and Talking Book (the following year) -his first 2 "T.O.N.T.O." albums (using Margoulieff and Cecil's (literally) room-sized computer-synthesizer!) and, those were the albums which broke Berry Gordy, Jr.'s [He's, actually, Berry Gordy III, but, everyone knows him as "Jr." so 🙄🙄....] "make non-threatening music" Motown standard and allowed 2 of its primary artists and voices to go out and make important, ground-breaking work which they, each, felt they needed to make, at that time.
It started a new era at Motown (brief as it was -by the time Motown moved to l.a., that was, already, a "dying breed," for them!-even if no-one there saw it, yet!).--So: To know that losing Tammi Terrell was, at least in SOME way, responsible for starting that/pushing that to become reality ...seems important, in context.]
Tammi Terrell died of brain cancer,
but she, also, lived through HORRIBLY abusive relationships with James Brown (when she was only 17 ...he was, I think, in his 30s, then....), who beat her within an inch of her life for, simply, NOT watching hi entire performance, one night! 😡😡😡
and, then: with the egoistical, (by then) drug-addled, also: married to another woman, when their relationship started (which Tammi was unaware of): David Ruffin (best-known as a primary lead vocalist for The Temptations).
...there is no way to "confirm" or "dis-confirm" anything, but: both of those men (and, perhaps, others, along the way, as well 🙄🙄🤷) beat Tammi in the head and may (or may not) have exacerbated damage or growing symptoms/elements of her (then: unknown and undiagnosed) brain cancer (which had been developing from a pretty early age, for her 😢😢).
As I said: Marvin Gaye never, really, got over losing her and the WORLD lost and INCREDIBLE voice! 💜💜💜💜💖
...She is, absolutely, gone-too-soon (and suffered too much while she was here!)!🤍💔💞

Everything they tried to tell us about Marvin and Tammy just being friends was a lie. They were definitely in a romantic relationship and Marvin was never the same after she died. He was the only one from Motown Tammi's family let come to her funeral because he was the only one who stuck by her till the end. I love them together so much!
Motown tried pairing Marvin up with other women like Kim Weston and even Tina Turner but Tammi was the one who clicked. She had such a difficult life. I think singing with Marvin was the high point.
Another great song from that era is Tramp with Otis Redding and Carla Thomas… the mixture of their two voices are like Marvin and Tammy ❤. Give it a listen

What's really inspirational is that this love song is also metaphor for Civil Rights Act era feeling so hopeful. Strange how Vietnam War protests helped bring all the struggles together. In some ways I wonder if times were more hopeful then. Beautiful song. Free spirited at the root. Of course it's rooted in church choir set free. We white Americans just heard the pretty song, but I feel all these years later an emancipation in the song. Our black American sisters and brothers always hopeful. Motown purity is completely compatible with rock and roll.

Great honest reaction as usual. I agree, the Tonight Show rendition was lousy. It is what it is ... but I like that you call it like you see it. Keep up the great work. You need to react to James Brown on Letterman on July 12th, 1982. Quite possibly the greatest live musical moment on Letterman ... and he's had plenty. He was so blown away by how good Paul Schaefer and the band were that he commandeered the whole 2nd half of the show and basically took over. It was epic.

Even in that lousy version, they pulled it out of their hats. This was the era of truly live television. It would be years before TAPE DELAY was added, and shows that canned music were panned by music fans. So to me, it's validation they are who actually performed the song, imperfections included. And they are humans with off nights, yet you can tell the song is really them.

Such a great song. Made beautiful music together. Carson had a great house band. Some of the musicians played in other great projects including Steely Dan. But this arrangement was not a good fit … especially next to the Motown sound.

Marvin's voice on tap even lost in the live version he's a pro with legit control of his range. I never had a Marvin Gaye fan period. Edwin Starr, Billy Preston, Reverend Al Green, Jackson 5, 5th Dimension, Earth Wind and Fire, Ohio Players, etc etc...all before my rock years began. Mind you: This was a very homophobic era. The worst thing for a guaranteed instant fist fight? A guy calls another guy "gay" with the "F" word. So I think it was because Marvin was popular during that time when at least in white culture, fist fights from that could occur at any time. Ironically, it was before Elton John came out. I got in fights mentioning he was gay. I thought it was obvious. Meanwhile Marvin definitely wasn't!! And it didn't matter at all, then or now. But I think in white culture, that's why Marvin Gaye had some limitations during his era. Which is ridiculous. Hard to explain to someone who didn't live through it. On the school bus, heckling using the above slur, or at PE class or after school. That was how 'gang stalking' punks of the era operated. Boys in fear in groups picking on the new kid or the bookworm. Using those slurs. It was like the "N" word in that time. Now if someone says I'm gay I'd simply say it's none of your business but if I was, I'd let them know. And they aren't my type. Or maybe tell them to let my girlfriend know so she can tell their blowup dollies issued by NRA Maga mail order to upgrade their companionship. Anyway, rambling. But his name is ironic since I do know my black buddies' moms, sisters, relatives etc all spoke about Marvin Gaye like they wanted to throw their panties at him. We knew he was a black sex symbol, but his last name in white culture was taboo. Even with the "e". So it's another case of ridiculous white evangelical influence in the subconscious mind (progress note: Russell Westbrook is a Taylor Swift fan ... And Taylor Swift is a Brodie fan. That is something that wouldn't be public information in 60's - 80's. So we can still turn this corner! I'm not sure I'm ready for Taylor Swift but I know she's an anomaly. A truly good person to her soul. Hope to see her get some legit band around her like War and take another step). Anyway, long post sorry, but it was his last name in white culture, why Marvin Gaye was held back. AIDS era extended it another 10 years. Strange world. And all that Maui Wowie Up In Smoke :(
