A splendid cast. No Verdi voices of this quality around today. Excellent sound too. One almost feels one's in the theatre. Many thanks. One of my favourite baritones as well in an unfamiliar role.
The audience was in great voice also. And among the treasures in this great cast was the Angelic Voice at the end of the auto de fe. She really did sound heavenly girlish so I was surprised to read online that Tota de Igarzabal was at that time a 46-year-old mezzo. From a 1948 autograph photo, she was a dark haired beauty and it's easy to see why she was a popular artist at the Teatro Colon. Thank you for posting this performance which sounds professionally recorded.
The cast caused a frenzy in the audience, even though Cossotto was told by the Chorus Master to not expect much applause that night. She was surprised at the audience's reaction after the Canzone del Velo, to which the Chorus Master simply shrugged at her as he too was shocked. If I am not mistaken, the audience was not made up of the general public.
The "Allora son io che a voi parlerò, Sire." seems to have suffered some sort of distortion or recording damage, would you agree? I'm surprised by how Wildermann, considered to be a third-rate bass is singing with Hines and pulling his own weight well enough.

Or do you think he simply faltered there?
I don't think there is anything wrong with the recording... 😊
