There's a simple reason people don't believe in work ethic. When they were younger they put lots of effort into a role/job in the hope of it going somewhere. And as such they believed in the dream where effort = outcome. Then bosses exploited there efforts and gave no reward so they learned / now believe that effort = more money for the boss and nothing for themselves. So that's why society now tries to take short cuts to achievement and doesn't put effort into things. Alot of people in the west are raised on the social contract that if you work hard and have a modicum of talent and applying you efforts then you will succeed. What happens is you just get exploited and after many times this happens people then start to game the system by exploiting it back but doing little to get most back. Bosses are in general breaking the social contract and society is suffering because of it.
