"À la Civette" is one of the oldest and most renowned tobacco shops (tabacs) in Paris. Located at 157 Rue Saint-Honoré, near the Louvre Museum, it has been serving customers since the 18th century. The name "À la Civette" refers to the civet, a small mammal whose musk was historically used in perfumery. The shop is famous for its wide selection of cigars, tobacco products, and smoking accessories, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists interested in traditional Parisian establishments. The symbol on top of the sign is a golden civet! Kinda looks like a cat. 👍🌞
I went to Wells cooking class in Paris 10 years ago. And I met Julia many Saturdays in Santa Barbara farmers market where she explained what potatoes I should buy . She was a lovely woman.
Sharri, don't beat yourself up about pronunciation, it's okay! Yes there is NOTHING like Dehillerin in Paris, but I've visited many huge restaurant supply stores in the US. They just don't have the same ambiance, of course! Some of your fans may also remember that Anthony Bourdain mentioned Dehillerin and Les Halles in his books and shows. Lovely tour, thanks! Would love to hear a bit more about your experience with Patricia Wells --I don't know if she still offers classes now but I was once tempted to go.💗
I still miss Anthony Bourdain's shows. He was a gem. Yes, Patricia does a few classes a year, but possibly only to prior class members, I'm not sure. Her classes were great. More conversational that heavy cooking techniques, as many of my classmates were serious cooks. In comparison, I was an amateur. The dinner/lunch conversations were wonderful given Patricia and Walter's work experiences and connections. She shared a lot about Julia Child. Lovely memories. Thanks for joining me!
I loved walking with you through the cooking shop E. Dehillerin. I will have to check it out on my next trip to Paris. I love Julia Child! She changed the way Americans think about food and encouraged us to try new things. I think the greater message you have of not being afraid to try and live your dream, or to make a significant change in your life is so inspiring.
Thanks for the video. I had read about this shop and one day while visiting Paris I happened upon the store! Wow what a surprise and a wonderful treasure hunt for chefs and cooks! You never know what you will find when you walk Paris❤
Love seeing Paris through your eyes. I have been visiting Paris since I was 16 and am now 57. There have been a lot of changes and of course a lot that is the same. My first visit was before the I.M. Pei pyramid and it has changed so much for the better. Dehillerin is amazing for cooks, bakers and all visitors to Paris.
I just found you! You inspired me to think more about what I want. Not just dream it but take positive action to first define it and then to create it. Yhank you.
That question should be interesting to ask ourselves and yet, it makes us pause...what do I really want? Connect to your feelings not a to-do list and it'll help you to find the answer. Thank you for joining me!
Thank you for explaining how the arrondissements are set up like a snail. Now, I can finally understand how they work. This is the first time I have watched your video and I enjoyed it very much. I look forward to going back through them and hearing your story -Pam
Thanks for joining me Pam! Yes, you'll hear the snail reference all the time, and it then makes sense because the city is not set up in a grid- it's curves and circles!
I am new to your vlog! I admire you and am so inspired by your sentiments. I was divorced after 31 years of marriage. The single life can be so rewarding. Thanks for sharing your life.
Some day I am going to go on a road trip. Write now I am a care provider for my elderly husband. I am quite young compared to him so it has taken a toll on me. I have not left my home for over 5 years and I am so down right now. I will take that road trip just don't know when.
Oh Betty (my mom’s name ❤)…I hope you can take a little break from the good work you’re doing and plan a little road trip now. You deserve it. Take care of you too. ☺️
She was an original...and stayed true to herself and her dreams and never once said, I'm too old! Plus, aren't her cookbooks amazing? You have a treasure.
My husband and I did a very similar route last May (2023). It's some of my most cherished memories - just walking around Paris and somewhat stumbling upon these things. We did have things marked on a Google map we had created so we had mapped what we wanted to see and then went to the area and just found the sites we wanted to see. It was the same kind of weather, same time of day and seeing your video just warmed my heart and brought back memories.
I love reading your share...it sounds like you have a wonderful trip. Sometimes it's only on vacations that we let ourselves wander...we should do it more often and in our own home towns! ❤
I haven't read the other comments and this is the first time I have watched your vlogs but Ina Garten also loves this shop and has had multiple careers. She is also been a great inspiration!
Love the journey with you, thank you. Dehillerin is wonderful, what I would call a restaurant supply store. We have a couple of nice big ones in Toronto and I have been in some in NYC, so surely in any city of any good size would have them. By the way, I so love Boston, part of my family ancestry, so love your excursions around that city too.
Hello Sharri! watching you is spectacular specially today home working on my next chapter in my life. You are taking me staright home to my city of love and a majeur part of my heart. Please don't mind of your pronunciations of French I understand you perfectly.
@extraordinarywomennextchapter I can imagine...I know Paris very well but I have never been at the Vefour...perhaps one day... Greetings from Berne 🇨🇭🙂
Just discovered your channel -will pop in later for more Paris updates-the cooking shop looked like maybe it’s more open for the trade. Maybe? But I’m hoping to follow you as well make it to France again. I’ve only been there once. I also watch Chateau Diaries. 😀
Chateau Diaries is one of my favorites too...Stephanie and team are lovely and fun. As for dehillerin, you just need to know what you are looking for...or want to purchase a keepsake you will use...and it's a perfect stop off for home cooks. Thanks for joining me!
Hello Sherry, From a fellow American who has lived in Paris, for over 25 yrs, a correction: the French Revolution was in 1789 not 1820. Thanks for video.
Oh good grief, how could I have said that!! I know this to be true, but what in the world came out of my mouth? Please excuse my verbal mistake and thank you for the correction!! (I have to be more careful.)
Hello Sharri! (pronouncing your name with a faux French accent As in Cheri. 😀 Just discovered you. Loved your video! Informative, interesting and so engaging. Look forward to seeing more. ❤️ from Australia. 🍃🌸🍃
I think you did fine with the French. Develop your confidence level. Thats all. I totally enjoyed the video. The ladt shop was lovely. Now, I want the copper pots and skillets.
Hi Sharri ! I really appreciate your videos, I just discovered them. I am starting my new chapter having just retired from a long time career. Ready for new adventures and inspiration. I’m looking forward to reading your book! Keep these videos coming, you’ve got me hooked! 😊
Great video Sherri! Please keep sharing bits of Paris such as E Dehillerin. We love that store, as well as Le Bon Marche (which is the video we first found you). You have very good taste and are well spoken. Please keep the Paris videos coming!
i love les frenchies! i've been following them for a couple of years now and they even have a facebook travel tips group! also, antoine's family members give tours! i've seen places similar to this here in the states. they are restaurant supply shops that are open to the public. but a lot of them have gone online. there are some places in nyc at least for baking. it was open years ago. not sure if it still is. you'd have to do some research. haha i'm going to get into so much trouble in that store when i visit paris! shipping. that's the way to go.
Great info on Antoine's family member tours!! Les Frenchies are lovely and provide loads of really good information...I need to invite them for lunch one of these days. Yes, you might get in trouble in Dehillerin but you'll have wonderful forever memories!!
The video was two - thirds over when we reached the destination, after a tedious meander through the district and we were treated to no more than a few minutes of the contents and 'ambiance' of the place before the sales pitch from the author. How interesting.
Hello! Thanks for the tour of Dehillerin. More restaurant supply stores in the immediate area are A Simon around the corner and across the street, who sell mostly tableware at wholesale prices, and Mora, good for baking supplies. There are others within a few hundred metres that are good for poking around. To answer your question, IMO many big cities have restaurant supply stores (NYC, Montreal) but perhaps none as complete/varied as those in Paris.
Thanks so much for taking us along on your tour today, you have such a lovely personality (you remind me of my Minnesota relatives). Take us along on a boutique shopping trip one day -- it would be such fun. (Love your apartment; which, I believe, is a French word so don't think you cannot pronounce French words correctly!) Nice to see a little rain; its been so hot and dry here in W Washington.
It rained every day for months!! Too much of anything is just too much, right? And you are correct! Appartement is a french word! Thanks for joining me.
Good morning Sharri! Wonderful video. I am very familiar with the route that you took to get to Dehilleron, and it’s lovely to see Paris in the rain☔️The store is going to be a top destination for me when we return in October. It does have a “restaurant supply” feel to it in the cellar area, and the only other similar, but definitely not as historic or famous, stores that I can compare it to are the ones on NYC’s lower east side. Always a bit scary looking though😊Greetings from Chicago✨
Hello and welcome!! Yes, put the shop on your list for your next visit. Also, if you fall in love with one of their big copper pots, they do deliver! (Pricey was a forever keepsake.)
Well, it goes up and down here...but an incredibly cool and long spring. Triple digits sounds difficult - life must slow down when it's that hot outside. Thank you for joining me!!
Thanks for the tour these arrondissements, I lived in Les Halles back in 86' and things were very different back then...I was wondering if you have done anything different to your Parisian apartment, just curious...LOL! Yes, I am very interested in your book, cannot wait to read it.
💗Hi there, great video and Thanks so much! As you may know by now, the civet is a small cat-like animal. I believe I read that they can produce a musk-like oil used in perfumes. Though that shop did not appear to be une perfumerie ---but anyway....I LOVE traveling along with you! P.S. I don't have Netflix so I had no idea Emily in Paris is a series. Sounds good!💗
Great information!! It must have been a perfumery of sorts at one time. Emily in Paris is fun but not all that realistic...but if you love Paris, you'll enjoy the series.
Sharri you did good. You’re honest & unpretentious. English speakers find it hard to pronounce words in French. It takes time & and a lot of practice. Same with the French their English pronunciation is not spot on as well. So there keep doing what you love doing & happy travels.
Don't worry girl about not speaking perfect French! You panned the camera to the street sign so we understand. You're videos are fantastic. Just be you! Brave you! xo
Great walk through Paris. In regards to your french get some good french novels, current literature, read them out loud this will improve your confidence etc. Also write 3 sentences a day in french and read them out loud. I promise you will improve. Courage.
Have you ever heard of the civet coffee? The civet cats eat the best and ripest coffee beans. Then nature takes its course. Someone collects the civet poo, washes the coffee beans and roasts them, and they’re sold for a huge amount! Apparently it’s very good coffee because the civets only eat the best beans. True.
Although I enjoyed following along on your 18 minute long video walk on the way to Dehillerin, I was very disappointed that you only spent FOUR minutes actually showing us a very tiny portion of the store itself! It would have been better to remain on the main floor of the store, as that is where the kitchen items that most of us would want to look at and perhaps buy are located. I’ve only been in this store once but spent almost two hours looking around…just fascinated by so many choices.
A la civette, an ancient scent and tabac shop, civette oil was used to make scent , Bégum , woman of high rank, Serge Lutens also a perfume maker of great quality varied price range ,***** leh aal ( Les Halles market ) silent s ,silent h. your enthusiasm is great
@@extraordinarywomennextchapter In the vlog you said Dehillerin had survived the French revolution which is impossible as they only started their business after the revolution. That's why I wrote what I wrote. That's all...By the way...I really enjoy your vlogs!!!
@@hubertl75 you are so correct!! I start talking in the vlog and sometimes it's like a good ramble- and I apologize!! Happy to have you join me and please do keep me from any long, inaccurate rambles!! 😊
So sorry Le Grande Colbert is not a fav, I come there annually for years for my birthday from US before it made popular by the movie. Returning this year for my 75th! Agree this is now more of a tradition than good food..but it’s my journey.
Fabulous birthday celebration!! Make every single birthday special is my belief, and it sounds like you've had many at Le Grande Colbert. Maybe I just experienced an off day. I'll have to try it again!
Nope…you definitely mispronounced Monsieur Pepin’s surname. I think you absolutely must get a tutor or take some classes. French is actually graded as one of the easier languages to learn, and I’m sure as a smart, sophisticated woman of the world you can get some basic pronunciation skills under your belt. First video I saw of yours, earlier this evening, I was so surprised and delighted to see your apartment and your wonderful finds from Puce, but like most Americans you even mispronounced the venerable Hermès name. You mispronounced that second syllable! I used to sell Hermès merch at their boutique in San Francisco in the 1970s inside I. Magnin and met the various family members … and that was when a Kelly bag cost about $100 or $200. Now a Kelly can run into five figures or more!!! Au revoir et merci beaucoup!
Pronunciation... 🙄🙄🙄 Do people really want references to the horrible Emily in Paris when you are there experiencing the real thing? I can't imagine anyone here is that superficial.

Someone collects the civet poo, washes the coffee beans and roasts them, and they’re sold for a huge amount! Apparently it’s very good coffee because the civets only eat the best beans. True.
How interesting! I learn from viewers like you with every video. Thank you for joining me and sharing!!
Great feedback. Thank you for joining me!

Thank you for all your fabulous information!! Loved it all...
If Dehillerin had started in 1820, it could not have survived the French Revolution in 1789. Just saying...love your vlogs btw 🙂
Not sure why you said what you said...yes, Dehillerin started in 1820, which was after the french revolution. Am I missing something? Please share.
It's a civet. You know, the animal. The name ofvyhe shop was a "hint." 😅
So perfect! So many of the beautiful signs above shops in Paris are from days gone by. Thanks for joining me!!
Well, if it opened in 1820, then it opened after the French Revolution.
Tuileries - you do not pronounce the s at the end
Hi Sheri, such an inspiring video as always. Although you are working on your spoken french , your joei de vivre is☀️spot on
Oh, your comment brought a smile to my face! Thank you!!
French is a different language to learn
Do people really want references to the horrible Emily in Paris when you are there experiencing the real thing? I can't imagine anyone here is that superficial.
