Actually it's less the number of artists that lessens sales, than the lack of shared experiences. In the years before digital radio and individual playlists, broadcast radio was the primary source of music for most people. The combination of having a limited choice of sources, repetition of songs on DJ playlists, and promotion of those artists on the top 40 or top 100 playlists meant the everyone's attention was focused on those songs/artists.
Artists today don't have the shared experience/exposure available to them. Broadcast radio is virtually dead and with it the DJ promoting songs he/she likes or that the station told them to play. E.g. Wolfman Jack wouldn't be able to tell 200,000 listeners, "Wow, I really dig this song," and drive half of them to the record store. The last vestige of that disappeared with the appearance of satellite radio and music players that can store thousands of songs.
    Just my personal opinion...CHEERS!!!

    • @anadialog
      @anadialog  4 года назад

Less individual promotion is surely one of the causes but again that happens alla because there arebjuatbtoo many artists and albums! On one side, thatbis positive, but you really needn't to dig because allot of crap, that would have never find its way in now sufficient to be published or occupy a space on social media. Thanks for your input!

Loudness is needed because everyone now listens to music on Apple earpods or smart speakers. Obviously, without loudness pumping nothing coms out of those devices. Hence compression.

I have had fabricated music CD's "die" on me due to oxidation of the reflexive aluminum layer through edges that weren't properly sealed. And once the reflexive layer is compromised, the data is gone. Which is when I decided to rip all my CD's into a lossless format on a harddrive archive that I keep several backups of. Vinyl might indeed last longer, but will also fail if not stored properly.
As for older gear: 100% agree. There were some great amps and turntables back in the day that still stand their ground.
Remastering: I remember buying the CD remaster of Stevie Wonder's "Songs In The Key Of Life". The remaster sounds like the studio monitors used had no tweeters. Yuck.
Vinyl and CD can both sound crappy. Or fantastic. Quality is in the mastering and the production process. For CD, it is mostly mastering due to built-in C1/C2 error correction that can - up to a certain point - recalculate missing chunks of data. Vinyl doesn't have that luxury which is why the production process is much more important. And there are real issues involved. After all, it all comes down to a case-by-case comparison.

When I moved house in the early 90's I stored a box of CD's in a mates shed.
They ended up living there for several years and when I retrieved them about a dozen or so were ruined.
The silver layer had disappeared from around the edges..!!

@@anadialog as with any digital format, backups save your day. If you are going digital, music CD's serve best as a show-off (if they have a good booklet with artwork, lyrics and liner notes, that is) while the actual music plays from lossless formats like FLAC. The first thing to do with a CD is always to get a perfect rip to a PC. Pretty much like the first thing to do with a new vinyl record is to get a copy on tape for everyday listening.

3:20, I did some research and found an old transcription from 1948 (when the LP was invented) that says they designed the "microgroove LP" to handle up to 4 grams of vertical tracking force! I've played some my records on 3.5 grams every week since the 80's , and they still sound the same! I've never used a system over 3.5 grams!

As a kid I discovered that I could hear the music by folding a piece of paper to a horn and attach it to a sewing needle I took from my mom. If was a nice discovery, but man did I destroy some records that way.
The scars on those records were audible as terrible squeeks from cutting into the grooves.
But what can I say. It was in my experimentation age where I blew up capacitors in my room for fun, and setting glue on fire with sparks of my model train transformer.

👍 Again, the remasters done by Kevin Gray and Bernie Grundman at their studios are *ALWAYS* kept in the analog domain. That doesn't mean that they are always necessarily better, but these guys do VERY good work! 😊 Now, I'm gonna hafta check out that Audioslave album! ***EDIT WOW! Just listening to them now (funny I never checked them out before) they're pretty good! You mention that the Bernie Grundman remaster is not good on vinyl, BUT there is an original 2002 release that MIGHT sound fine, although you will hafta spend about $150 - $200 to find out 😊 Here are two comments on Discogs about the 2002 US release:

Definitive copy. I've had 3 versions of this record and and this one is by far the best. Great dynamics, soundstage and intricacies I had never heard before. The groove spacing is much wider than the first EU/MOVLP (they used the same metal work) and the most recent run. Pick it up if you can!

Hello again from Canada! I don't believe "vinyl deterioration" is a myth. It's a physical reality: There is physical friction between a stylus and a hard vinyl surface. There has to be deterioration. Everytime you go out on your bike your tire deteriorates a little bit. It's the same principle. And yes the sound is modified after several playbacks. I use to have a large vinyl collection in the 80's and I use to record all my records on high quality cassettes the first time I played them. Once I did the following experiment: I played the same record everynight side A and B for a month. 30 days. After that I listened to the tape I had made when it was new. There was a clear audible difference after only 30 plays. And yes, I had the correct weight on my stylus.
Don't get me wrong, vinyl does sound great. No doubt there. But if you are a perfectionist like me,then I don't think a well transferred and mastered digital version of any audio that was well recorded to start with, can be beat. The problem of terrible sounding cd's is mainly due in my opinion, to mediocre sound engineers who just don't know what they are doing. And they dominate the industry today... A very sad fact. But I submit this to your consideration...
    Keep up the interesting videos!

I listen to a lot of this now off
Of a USB stick on a good DAC and they sound great.
Plus there's the ease of convenience and the transportability... plus many music formats can be digitized in flac whatever they may be: vinyl, cd, shm cd, dvd etc...

I am quite happy and grateful for your knowledge of the world (I would say Universe, hehe) of analog and digital recording. Little I have to add, except that above the prize of the diamond disk exists (or existed, because it is impossible to sell so many copies these days by the multitude of artists, as you say) the uranium disk, which corresponds to 50 million copies. Those who have this award are AC / DC for Back In Black (1980), Queen for his compilation Greatest Hits (1981), Michael Jackson for Thriller (1982) and the singer of my country (Spain) Raphael for his total discographic sales.
It was just that. I greatly appreciate your contribution to the world, your realistic vision on the quality of analogue technology over digital (although I recognize that analog sound is superior in many aspects to digital, I must confess that my record collection is mostly CD´s because of the practicality that it has. My dream is having a vinyl collection like a good friend called Gerson, that when I met him at age 14 he already had in his vinyl collection 17 LP's of Queen that "tortured me" (just kidding) a whole year listening to them on a superior analog set until making them one of my three most listened and favorite bands, sharing the podium with Pink Floyd and Alter Bridge, bands with a lot to say (analog listening preferred :)

Hi there, here in the Netherlands we have an expression, I played that record grey. With other words played it a lot. If someone say's that to me I response with, check the stylus pressure.
Then with a simple explanation how it works they get it. I explain his as follows. If your wife weights let's say 75KG and she step at you're toes with a sneaker at her feet you will feel it. But it aint hurting that much. But now she wears High heels and step at you're feel, My gosh that hurt a lot. To me it's the same with the 1.8 gram my stylus is set. If you calculate this, this 1.8 gram to the stylus thewight is actualy around 1500KG at that tiny little tip. Think noone is realizing this. Therefore allso the tip can become very hot. And as you just mentioned in this video, by playing the same song over and over again, yes that song can wear out a little It is melting a bit. Espacialy at cheap player with a conical tip which need more tracking force. Enough about this now.
I would like to see you do a video about a liniar tracking turntable the so called prons and cons. I never understood why it really din't take off. I wont tell you right now which one well Actualy 2 I do own, but there are many brands that did produce at one or 2 models. The only thing I tel you right now is I do use an Ortofon 2M Black in one turntable and in the other a Grado ReferenceMaster+1
So keep on doing the good work and spinning the records.

      @@eatdrinkwineguy Hj Myles.
I agree. It is possible to improve on a bad recording in a limited way. When bad means noise or distortion, there are some digital tricks these days. On the other hand, when bad means, we don't like the way it sounds, well....music quality is rather subjective. You might like something that somebody else dislikes.
Having said that, I am under the impression that most remasters have been done for commercial reasons. Sadly enough, for record companies, better often means turning up the bass and volume.
A good example is the version of the remastered Bad album from Michael Jackson on Spotify. Bad is the only correct word for it indeed. My wife still has the original LP from the eighties laying around but I have no record player any more to play it on. Perhaps one day I buy myself a record player again, just to enjoy some of my old record again.
If you have some recommendations of good remasters, please let me know. I would be happy to give it a listen. :-)

Yeah Remasters - some are good, many bad. I bought the original Pretenders LP when it came out in '80 and then a remastered CD a few years back - I had to seek out the unremastered CD to get that magic back in digital form (I still have the vinyl though). Then there was that ZZ Top Six Pack (WTF?!). Conversely I do have a couple of Steve Wilson's and several good remasters that recaptured stuff that was lost in the original digitization. Then of course there is the truly marvellous White Album and Abbey Road 'rebuilt' remasters.

Great video, the new Sting remastered Lp's, the Soul Cages for example and the Beatles mono lp reissues, Revolver for example, are superior to any previous versions in my opinion. Comparing the new Beach House album 7, on cd and lp, the lp version grabs you more, the cd is colder. Could be because the lp master has more bit depth, because of the digital to analog conversion used, who knows

During the heyday of the 1970s when I was living in Melbourne from time to time, and it was the music capital of Australia, the record companies used to pay people to go to the record stores to purchase records in order to boost the sales figures. A friend in the US music industry told me that the record companies used to report sales of records to the performers from only one of several record pressing plants so they could pay the musicians less. Eh no, your inner ear converts pressure waves into electrical impulses which travels to your auditory cortex, and then processed by the parietal and frontal lopes of the cerebral cortex. There are no 'ones' and 'zeroes' in the human brain it is all electrical impulses.

So in this sense, the brain is computing using something like binary signals. Instead of 1s and 0s, or 'on' and 'off', the brain uses 'spike' or 'no spike' (referring to the firing of a neuron)." Another great video, agree records do wear but it takes many plays to become noticeable.
On another point, I suspect it is in the mastering, in the early days cd did not sound so good if they were burned with media mastered for vinyl.
And now albums mastered for cd (digital/streaming as well) will be too hot and sound not good on vinyl. Albums need to have a separate masters created to sound right on each media format.

Back in the 1970s we "listened" to several records with a spectrum analyser. Invariably, a previously played record had more HF than a virgin record. Playing with too _low_ of a tracking force was _worse_ in this regard than playing at the upper limit. The tone arm was a Shure SME and the cartridge was a V15 Mark 3, or 4 (I can't recall which). The damage was not only permanent, it was cumulative.

I think the studios and record labels f##ked up the CD, if a CD is well recorded and mastered, it will sound fantastic, it’s a shame that the people giving us music on CD choose to jump the fence where it was the lowest.... remasters, I totally agree with you, but I also think that the Hi-Fi dealers being often very snotty and know it all types scared of a lot of costumers in the 80s and 90s that would like well recorded music played over a good system, mp3 made the system redundant.

Worn out records are much more possible due to sticking dirt on the diamond. This stuff can weld together to a really annoying hard stuff that destroyes the grooves. It`s astounding how hot such a stylus can get when not be cleaned properly! And, going back to 1970ies Vinyl culture: People with an eliptical stylus had much more responsibility for the maintainance of their cardridge, while coneheads had more "Headroom" in their accuracy of cleaning and setting up their cadridges and tonearm parameters. It`s not without sense that DJ Cardridges have a conical needle. It`s just because being a record in a Discothek was a pure torture for the poor vinyl. And i am concerned, that a Record that came from a Discothek immediately came into the heaven of music when they died at last, because they had already hell on earth lol....
(I often explode inside when Friends see my group of 6 audiophile Turntables, and say: "ok, so how good are you in scratching and Teccno? " ) Wow.. scratching is the last thing i would do with my poor Records. I even have a bad conscience, if i don`t clean the Record before i play it! Scratching is a pain in the ass for me and i thank the gods of Walhalla that CD-Scratching was invented!

@@anadialog Ciao Amico, My Turntables are especially 3 Pieces Unitra GS531, a polish Manufacturer that built very good TT`s in the 1980ies, but i made them from descent Turntables to proper audiophile Ones! They were also sold under the Brand of Tecco and Altus back then. I decided to use them, because they have a very good and stable casing, made of 2mm solid steel, and a Tonearm with an excellent Antiskating System. The steel casing is excellent shielded against all kind of magnetic fields, and i also braced them with inlays of MDF for extra acoustical damping. And, it`s no question that i rewired the tonearm with new british silver covered oxygenfree Copper-Cables.
A man must do what a man must do ;-) ^^.
Also a new SME mounting System had to be installed, so i can use the newest Headshells i ever want to use!
One comes with a Nagaoka MP110,
      One with an AT95,
and One with the new AT-VM95 E -
which is a really excellent cardridge for middle weighted tonearms! I was really surprised when i compared the VM95 E to the Nagaoka!
And, for additional acoustical damping, and for the eye, i covered the steel housing of my TT`s with a very fine Leather!
The first of my tuning Projects i made up with a fine black leather, the second one with a bordeaux-red calve-leather, and the third one is just waiting to be covered with a middle brown Buffalo Leather!
The Leather is a value surface, and has an extra damping factor that we must not underrate! every milimeter counts!
So, then i also have two DUAL CS 430`s that i tuned up also in a certain way.
One comes with an AT 95 E,
and the other one has the Ortofon OM20 installed.
OK, the Duals are not the same league as the Unitras, but they play very well. I just work on them to give them an extra massive plinth, to make them more stable, but that`s a project i am not finished by now... But they play!
Then, in a weak minute of my life, i bought a DJ TT.
A stanton T.80, which i converted from DJ Stuff to audiophile with a new 9" Tonearm, silver cables, and an Antiskating System with the usual counterweight that`s hanging down beside the Arm...
But my 7th TT will be the masterpiece!
This is a Turntable completly designed by myselve, and this comes with a 12 Inch Carbonfiber Tonearm, and a direct drive system from a Reloop RP-2000 MK2.
To describe this TT: It looks like a Big Zylinder, with a Diameter of 34cm, and a hight of about 25cm. The main part of the round casing is covered with middlebrown buffalo leather, and the top-plate with a beam for the Tonearm on the side is made from oiled black acacia wood.
As soon as i have my video equipment ready for making some videoclips, i will provide some pictures from this stuff.
But in short words: My "masterpiece" has a touch of steampunk Design, with a plate of grinded raw Aluminium (just covered with clear paintjob) for the switches, and the brown leather..
So, at last, i am working on a swiss Turntable, a Lenco L-236! One of the last Fully Automatic Turntables from Lenco before they closed the doors....
This TT also will be housed in a massive new plinth out of black acacia and maybe red leather. As a supplement, I have to mention, that my slipmats are made out of the same leather as the cover of the housing. Leather is pretty good against static energy, and gives the whole thing a nice look!
At last, i think, that i will make a Stand-alone Project with my Lenco. For this i may use a nobsound little bear tube - preamp, and a descent poweramp, all together in the same casing, and with two DIY 2Way Loudspeakers. I just must figure out how the small class"D" Amp i have in plan for this All in One Solution, is good enough or not...
And before someone will come with bad critics to the little bear: I figured out, that with a really strong power-supply of 10A, this gear works really fine, and has a good dynamic range! I red some bad critics about the little bear, but i think, the lack of sound-quality comes from the wimpy original power supply!
All that said, i also want to reveal the rest of my gear: The main is a chain with a Dynavox TPR3 Preamp, and two Dynavox ET100, which i use to bi-amp my 4way JBL 4341 Clones.
And, the second chain is just an old Philips Receiver, a Philips AH683 with 2 pairs of Philips loudspeakers from the 1980ies!
One pair is a FB565 Bass-reflex with passive membranes, and the second is a pair of FB563 ported Bass-reflex. Both Chains work excellent, and reproduce Music very fine! Especially the Philips Loudspeakers have got a total makeover, and are better than new nowadays, as they are over 30 Years old lol...
And the JBL Clones... what should i say? They have the potential to bring an orchestra into my living room, just as possible as this can be done...
But, i will provide a video as soon as i am ready to do so.... You must know, i am retired, and i have time for almost nothing... lol....

@@anadialog Bytheway: I see you have the Dynavox Aux-S! How would you rate this switch? As i got mine, i first tried it out with some wimpy interconnects, and i was really annoyed from the Net-Frequency hum. Then i added a Binding post for Ground, and purchased better Chinch-Cables, and - Simsalabim: The hum is gone! Everything is dead quiet now! cables matter lol... They matter, more than one can imagine! They really matter!
And, the Aux-S is a really good device, i think... That casing only matches my Dynavox MT-50, and not my ET-100`s.
The MT-50 is used for my little Computer Loudspeakers, and i don`t need a switch for this... But, it is what it is... lol...
Saying this, i am really annoyed by the costs of simple casings with nothing inside. Most of the time, it would be cheaper to buy a device with a casing that matches my needs, and to throw away what`s inside, and then use the casing for my own project.... Sounds funny, but so it is... sadly...
I purchased 2 sets of 4to 1 switches with some good relais, and a remote controlled ALPS-potentiometer, with the possibility to controll my switches. All together would be a proper device, but the costs for analuminium casing are three to four times higher than the electronic stuff that comes inside... Isn`t this crazy?
