Let me remind y’all. Ray won 3 world championships then hung up his controller and moved to Japan. He is literally Red standing atop Mt. Silver waiting for a worthy challenger. They couldn’t have written a better player for their competitive history books. Such an unfortunate way to snub a grass roots Pokémon storyline. Sorry Wolfe and co. but Ray is the GOAT.

I just wanted to say, you were the reason I started playing pokemon in the first place, and seeing this happen to you makes me feel a bit more justified in my recent disinterest in competitive pokemon. I feel like sometimes I'm only in it to see the friends I've made over the years anymore
What a horrible situation. I always thought they ran the Asian circuits weird but this seems waaay too far. Especially not warning people beforehand.
Also, how does a 3 time world champ not make the cut to commentate on Worlds?!

Out of all ways to not make it, I can't think of a single way that would sting more. From qualified, to not qualified but still a chance, to disqualified, all without playing a single game in between...

I also play in Asia, and you're absolutely right about tournaments everywhere having issues. I play in Thailand, and for Nationals you had players flying to Bangkok from other provinces just to lose one single elimination BO1 game, and have their hopes for the season crushed in brutal fashion. Closed team sheets T64 + 32, open team sheets T16 onwards, BO3 final only. TPCi has disrespected Asia's players massively this year.
I am sorry to hear that there has been so much obstacles that TPC puts up. I really don't get why those rules weren't posted before the qualifiers

Honestly it's so criminal how they run events and, not just that, but how impervious they seem to the criticism. It's like they just don't care to improve and players are one marketing tool (spectator mode being the example here). Anyway, I'm really sorry and I can't imagine the way you and all players in Asia feel, and I hope the unprecedented uproar of this year is a step to change things for the better
Pokemon company is the epitome of Japanese business man arrogance. Their last flagship gen is a cringefest performance wise. And their way of doing "esports" is just behind the times. But they just ignore any criticism.

this is such horseshit I'm sorry man this should be tied to player id like all other competitive games. there's no reason the TO shouldn't recognize your vp and confirm the invite that way. imagine if smash threw out your tourney invite if you changed your gamer tag or something I'm sorry man this sucks. you're the best of the best though keep your head up

thing is that it is not the whole pokemon company that is throwing, it is just the korea and japan part. Also I'm not sure whether a boycot would work, they organize it for the players and viewers after all.

How are they so bad at this? It must be so absurdly frustrating to deal with.
What's sad is that it's not just awful event organization, it's also partially due to the game itself just being bad and not functioning as it should. Why does it use save data like this? Why can't you just change the language? Not to mention that disastrous buggy online tournament that started this. The players deserve better from a franchse this massive, how utterly embarrassing on their end.

My switch had a malfunction which was fixed by Nintendo under warranty a couple of months ago and as part of that process, they formatted my switch. Not an issue as most games have cloud saves and I just got my save data back, but Pokémon doesn’t have cloud saves and I lost two save files with combined 3000+hrs on Sword and Scarlet. Emailing TPC about this didn’t result in any help being offered, and I just lost all interest in taking Pokémon seriously when I know at any point all my hard work can get wiped out with no method to recover. Honestly very poor support from TPC and weird that it’s this bad in 2023
Does VGC Worlds have an open event on Saturday? I'm a TCG player and we always have an SPE (Special Event) at Worlds called the "London/Japan/etc Open" that anyone with a spectator pass can enter.
That's crazy, developers often muddle competitive play in various games but TPC is on a whole different level.

This is awful and I hope you run it back last year. This is probably a massive blow to your drive to compete but know that the entire community loves and supports you Ray!
Honestly I kind of hate the "there's nothing they can do" mentality when it comes to situations like this. I understand most people don't wanna make a huge scene and they can't force themselves into a structured competition, but there absolutely needs to be human staff involved that can actually analyze individual situations and make proper judgment calls on them.
Then again when you look at that TCG judge case a couple months ago it's hard to think it would even improve much, but it has to be better than what happened here.

It really blows my mind to think at how poorly handled things are with the VGC side of things in Japan considering Worlds is gonna be there this year but also the fact that the game and entire franchise is literally made from there. Figured it’d be the place that’s setting the standard but maybe the market isn’t as big for VGC over there as is in the US? Idk but we all know the GOAT Ray isn’t gonna go out like that!
