As an italian I play mostly the italian tech tree, I can say it was a bit paintful and after a long time I am still only researching the eugenio di savoia(I am a free to play player). The only ship that I can say was rally fun is trento, this ship when it was at 5.0 ,was for me, not a really good player a very good ship
Dude.. if you can get the Geniere.. on sale or any time... it is by far the best Bluewater ship for its BR and even above it... the damage will keep up with and surpass even the Atlanta...

To be fair, the Italian 8" guns have the second best heavy cruiser dispersion figures after Kirov, so... There is an error in her long range AP pen. Gaijin gave it too much air drag to her shells. Mikuma not having good gun angles... ??? I recommend you check that again. Especially when comparing it to Helena.
I agree on many aspects you shared on the Pola, it really isn't competitive against a live Helena for sure, BUT the Performante AP rounds WHEN they connect are one of the best in the 8" arena. The problem is the dpm and the dispersion, me thinks artificially nerfed as Gaiijen hates the Italian navy. There is one shining light, it used to even be brighter you failed to mention in the bluewater navy and that is the Trento. When the Trento was at 5.0 it was a beast, at 5.3 it's still very competitive and basically has the same hard-hitting rounds as its bigger brothers AND torps too.
I disagree, the Italian TT has some strengths: Speed of the ships and the AP that can pen Everything. because that was the Italian naval doctrine, the problem is, in bugthunder, those advantage can't be used very well. naval meta is HE/SAP spam, but Italian ship didn't had SAP shell (the only ones to had those shells were the BB); the only italian ship that would fall in this category are the 2 postwar San Giorgio and Maybe the Duca degli Abruzzi light cruiser
While nothing is gonna compare to US naval firing speed, the Pola is a killer ship. I've clutched several games in this ship when I was grinding out the Italian navy. Italian navy is just for gigachads. If you wanna dominate naval, play USSR/Ger/US.
The sad thing is that because the italian line is played by so few people (including myself) gaijin nerf it to the death just because it doesen't give them money. Compered to how broken and unrealistic (and definitly unfun) the american tree is there's really no match. There are still some brightspots tough the trento is a good ship and I personally like the Margottini destroyer, waiting to try out the Abruzzi and see what it can do.
Well, I personally have the Pola and I like it, I made beautiful matches with him and with the Zara. The reload is slow but for me the dispersion of the guns in accettable. I don't know if the Zara class cruisers had a SAP projectile but I know that tey were the best heavy cruisers in the world built under the limitation of the Washington Naval Treaty
Back when 8 inch shells were worth a damn, i actually saw quite a few rn polas and even british 5.7 cruisers, since that nerf a while ago ive been the only british play i see with the occasional british dedtroyer/tiger and have only seen 4 italian ships, one of which was in an EC game, its depressing to only see helenas/clevelands
The real ship did have SAP, all Italian warships (except destroyers armed with anything smaller than 135mm), they didn't bother with HE since SAP is dual purpose, if it fails to penetrate it explodes, otherwise it penetrates and detonates like APHE And although the real Zara-Class had problems with dispersion due to gun placement (done to keep the ships slim), firing single shots instead of salvos work wonders on all ships on game.
No way....The Eugenio di Savoia CL and its montecuccoli class sister are AMAZING cruisers..... 8 rpm... 72 km/h... Lots of Torps... Excellent firing angles and armor is absolutely beastly. They're amazing cruisers. The CL of the capitani Romani class is a blast to play...not bad 8rpm, 8 guns, 12 torpedoes and fast as a Ferrari... Amazing ship. Trento is great too and Andrea Doria is a good BB. Of the DD only the Geniere of the soldati class is good, the rest is meh... Still... They're absolutely not a bad line as you said.
Hey Napalm, thanks for the thorough review for the Pola and every other vehicle/vessel you choose to do! On a side note, would you be willing to run a video series for intermediate to advanced naval players looking for some tips to fight these bots a bit more efficiently? Like choice spots to aim for ammo racking ships (rear turrets on US ships), when and where to use AP rounds, smartly aiming and leading torps, and point capping strategy when you don’t have much coastal support…things you think about from the beginning, but either don’t find the answer or do so via hours of trial and error.
The Pola is alright, this video made me question whether or not I could roflstomp our homie Napalmratte xD Edit - Had a chance to find out but he J'd out 3x in a row because it was a blue circle of death map :P
Personally for me no torps isnt reall a problem I get racked pretty often when I take em, other then that ty for this video I was debating buying the Pola
I know; I brought this ship for its looks, and I knew it was bad (I have all premium cruisers but the Russian ones, cuz I talisman my Maxim Gorky instead). Tough their rank 4 light cruisers are decent, I was still surprised the they nerfed them to 5.7. Guess they killed too many Moffetts. I actually had a good 1v1 duel with a Pola in my Baltimore, cuz I challenged him after he erased my PT-810 with his Saetta. Yes; i won the cruiser round. But not only Italy; the British and the US costal tree could use something of a post-war PT boat (or anything well armed, with a PT spawn, and not a slow barge) that at least equal to the toxic OP Pr.206s or even the Freccia.
So I did grind the entire tech tree without the Pola yes almost all ships have half the reload than the rest of the ships 3.7-4.7 with lacking torps and firepower the recent cruisers that have been moved from 5.3-5.7 are now completely useless so now the Italian tech tree doesn’t have any meta ships AT ALL Zara is good only because of the Rank that is in but other than that all ships suffer and mostly face ships that can literally kill it in 2 salvos mostly. Not to mention ammoracks when not having fire protection and high repair costs. Pleas Gaijin buff the navy and add some more floatplanes to the tech tree
I only have the Zara, but going by that: the guns wouldn't be so bad if it weren't combined with the exposed ammo rack. Basically, it's either hide the hull 'cheeks' behind an island or risk going full broadside... it's not great option but I could swear I've been racked a lot less doing that than trying to angle... Certainly don't try to bow tank with Zara/Pola against something with really high pen... I was once in a Montecuccoli, spotted a poor Pola trying bow tank me at mid range and proceeded promptly rack him straight through the bow.
Your rankings of the premium cruisers is interesting. Helena is a no brainer for being the best. After that id put prinz eugen/zheleznyakov>mikuma>belfast>pola. I like using prinz quite a bit, one of the few cruisers that isnt japanese that can torpedo spam. Fire off some torpedo arcs early game and even after you die you can get 1, 2, maybe 3 kills after several minutes. The guns work well and the armor is good vs any cruiser. Russian cruiser is solid, but armor isnt great. The guns are real good though Mikuma has an ammo rack that is real easy to detonate, and the armor doesnt stand up well to 6" fire which can easily pen to the ammo in my experience. Otherwise the dps is there if you can stay alive Belfast doesnt stand out but aint too bad. Havent used it or faced enough to have a strong opinion. Pola, judging by your vid and my experience facing them, is certainly the worst of the bunch. When the guns hit they do hit hard, but that reload is sad. Best thing about it is the armor.
G'day Napalmratte, Having played Italy since they were added + NCBT weekends it's a mixed bag of pain but their 4.7 lineup is nice an they have two nevwr finished ships too but they're also still missing a MAS boat from CBT (Plz gib the MS-74 Series 2 back). Their small craft TT is ironically the only one I would call a coastal TT with like maybe to bluewater ships in it unlike the rest that are filled with ocean going ships but their corvettes ain't to bad either although the grind to them is BS (I really wish the 2.01 split didn't happen for these vessels requirements are horrible). Italy used to be known for it's AShM yet now the the US takes that light with a premium that has a SAM. Still one good this is the poxy Pom-Pom's on early destroyers for some daft reason cause the mother of all camera shake against other vessels making it near impossible to aim shots against them. Anywho I've just unlocked their Prince Eugene so maybe that'll be alright even when the better Ex sister is somehow a lower BR.
Italy is at a disadvantage but the RN Generie is much better the Generie. The Soldati destroyers are arguably the best in the tree. If you play Italian naval play 4.3 or 4.7 you will have fun... the rest is pain
can you do a revisit of the prinz eugen? to clarify more on his state in the game now, i have been considering to buy it since its the only one that comes in a pack

Eugen is great to counteract battleship RP repair costs, in your lineup, it stomps lower br ships easily. Wheras the italian ships are all great at lower BRs but gaijin keeps raising them...
thier guns are a million times more accurate than american guns. american garbage you dont even hit the target. doesnt mater how much damage they can do if they dont do any. italian ships are actually protected save for plunging fire where they suddenly just explode with no prior damage. torpedos are garbage or dont exist aa is fucking great. fast manuverable. generally good all rounders. idk what your complaint was and i think you need to actually play them next time.
Helena players are some of the worst in naval rb, I kill them with torpedo boats. Pola is lacking in AA armament and the guns aren't as accurate as they should be but if you want top tier Italy it will help the grind. And really how often do you get kills with torpedos in cruisers?
blue water fleet in general, it's either actual good navies of the world like GB, US, JP or artificial "good navies" made good through gaijin's favaritism in this game like USSR and GER. of course regia marina can't compete with either. that said there is still better ships to be added to regia marina like san giorgio 6 5' u.s gun destroyer or abruzzi light cruiser with 10 decent relaoding 152mm that can have her sister ship as another tier 4 premium soon. but they are not around yet and with the favarotism i mentioned above regia marina won't stand a chance. but at least regia marina exists. if you want to play regia marina to have fun which ultimately is the goal, then don't. fun is achieved through fake ussr navy or geniune good navies like us or jp.
Ive gone about halfway through the italian naval tech tree and it really isnt competitive. Im sure some people have the skills to do well, but i just dont.
Hey Napalm, you should take a look at the German SMS Elbing... that thing is basically an unkillable god at 4.7, I literally put over 60 305 AP and HE shells into it with my USS Alaska in one occasion and it had over 30% crew at the end of the match... and this is just the most egregious examples, they're impossible to ammo-rack and ALSO impossible to crew kill... the only way to kill is to flood them out.
Elbing isn't nearly that powerful, out of the three 4.7 cruisers it's about as good as Kako, but not as good as Attilio Regolo, which isn't a bad thing since I'd like to see more WW1 era light cruisers and protected cruisers, provided we get more decompression, but still
The trick that the player may have been doing is not repairing, but you mention AP rounds too, so it may have been just really bad rng for you and really good one for the Elbing.

I actually like the Prinz Eugen, I use it as my early spawn and spam 26 torps 😅 if it’s on sale 50% off definitely a buy. It’s fast too.

And i myself are able to kill Elbing using HMS Dido

My experience shooting elbings is quite the opposite
