  • Robert Oliver Reed (13 February 1938 - 2 May 1999) was an English actor known for his well-to-do, macho image and "hellraiser" lifestyle. After making his first significant screen appearances in Hammer Horror films in the early 1960s, his notable films include The Trap (1966), playing Bill Sikes in the 1968 Best Picture Oscar winner Oliver! (a film directed by his uncle Carol Reed), Women in Love (1969), Hannibal Brooks (1969), The Devils (1971), portraying Athos in The Three Musketeers (1973) and The Four Musketeers (1974); the lover and stepfather in Tommy (1975), Funny Bones (1995) and Gladiator (2000).
    For playing Antonius Proximo, the old, gruff gladiator trainer in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, in what was his final film, Reed was posthumously nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 2000. At the peak of his career, in 1971, British exhibitors voted Reed fifth most popular star at the box office. The British Film Institute (BFI) stated that "partnerships with Michael Winner and Ken Russell in the mid-60s saw Reed become an emblematic Brit-flick icon", but from the mid-1970s his alcoholism began affecting his career, with the BFI adding "Reed had assumed Robert Newton's mantle as Britain's thirstiest thespian".
    Reed died from a heart attack during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta, on the afternoon of 2 May 1999. According to witnesses, he drank eight pints of German lager, a dozen shots of rum, half a bottle of whisky and a few shots of Hennessy cognac, in a drinking match against a group of sailors on shore leave from HMS Cumberland at a local pub. His bar bill totalled a little over Lm 270 (almost £450; about US$590). After beating five much younger Royal Navy sailors at arm-wrestling, Reed suddenly collapsed, dying while en route to hospital in an ambulance. He was 61
    years old.

    And Oliver Reed appears to be still imbibing in the afterlife: a couple of years ago his son told a newspaper that nothing would grow on his dad's grave because visitors pour so much booze on it. Apparently The Grave looks like this because that's the way Oliver wanted it to be with no fuss

    I met Oliver Reed in about 1982. He was tall and elegant in a striped blazer and bow-tie and was just a little bit drunk. He had a beautiful voice, and was polite and friendly and also extremely funny. A precious memory of a wonderful actor!

      He wasnt that tall, less than 6 feet as Im 6ft 2 inches and I towered over him, he liked a good drink and a good laugh,but he wasn't a tough man at all don't believe all them stories,he was a thinker that became sad when he thought about life and his past,he was very much a man that lived in the present and on his terms just like his mates Otoole,Harris,Burton,finch and Dylan Thomas.Acting was just a way for him to enjoy life to the full,he was very compassionate but he had Demons just like us all.I think he envied men like me,because we can "switch" off and we don't expect anything from life but these men being very artistic and intelligent over think life and they lose themselves in good times to numb the pain of reality,which is ultimately brutal.

    The biography of Oliver Reed, 'Evil Spirits,' is well worth a read. He loved England, Guernsey, and Ireland (as your vid makes very clear). He had a great fondness for animals and the rural life. I think he vastly preferred hanging out with local, rural type people than the Los Angeles types. This may have bee a contributing factor to him not getting some bigger roles, but I don't see that as a bad thing. He clearly got a lot of joy out of growing vegetables, working with horses, and drinking in a humble pub.

      B.S. living long doesn't mean a good life, it's what you do with it is what counts. I'd rather live a short life full of parting and good times, eating red meat and drinking to exsess, than a long life of mundane bullshit eating kale and tofu. A friend once told me, life isn't a dress rehersal...you only get one go, and if you do it right...once is enough. On the time scale of the universe...who gives a shit?

    • @autumninvirginia1229
      @autumninvirginia1229 6 месяцев назад

      Apparently your father was not an addict.. Inspite of that he marauder thru life wine,women and song. "No one hurt" as he lived his life. Yep 2 daughters and a wife hurt. One daughter a drunk who had and destroyed her 7 kids lives. Multiple car accidents with other people hurt and others property damaged and destroyed. Remorse heck no he and my sister bragged they did it their way . We won't get into the other kinder souls who had addictions and were hurt . So when you live as a victim of hedonism, addiction, selfishness and acquired victimhood due to failure to grow up, then maybe you have a platform. Some talented people take the gifts they have leaving a void they were supposed to fill. BTW I avoided addiction and have a career and enjoy life clean and sober.

    A fantastic video, thank you! I lived in North Tipp for a while and always promised myself a drive to his grave but never did. This is good enough. Rest in Peace Mr Reed. You'd have been 85 this year. Just to add, 12:41 the boxer stood up is Henry Cooper, another British boxing legend. One last thing, during the 1982 Falklands Conflict it was reported, but maybe an urban legend, that Reed tried, at the age of 44, the reenlist in the British Army so he could go and fight in the conflict. He was turned down due to his age.

    The Great Oliver Reed . So many memories come flooding back from the time I lived in Guernsey and on how he loved to shock people with his capers , On going to a wedding reception where neither my partner nor myself had been invited we sat at Ollies table with his wife Josephine . Opposite sat upon a chair was the present Ollie had bought for the newly married couple, a skeleton of a Bulls head complete with horns, and dangling off each horn was stick on ribbons , turns out he hadn't been invited either , what a crazy night that was , people would come to our table and raise a toast to the bull in acknowledgement ,when the festivities ended, he stood up did a grand bow to the bull and he and his wife left , ah boy, wild days indeed

    Hannibal Brooks has always been my favourite film ever since the 70's as a small child. And he was legendary as Bill Sikes in Oliver Twist. And it was well noted that the TV shows used to put alcohol in his dressing room knowing he would get drunk.

    I loved this actor but i didn 't know he lived in Ireland? Good choice!Oliver Reed to me was an outsanting man ! With a lot of talent as actor! He was also very humble not the big head! I have been shocked by seeing his grave ! To me he deserved much more! But perhaps as he was humble he did ask a simple head stone for his final resting place? Anyway thank you very much indeed for this very interesting video ! It's worthy! Rest in Peace Mister Reed ! You'll never be forgotten!!! A French Man ...

    Thank you very much GV, for a very informative video. I believe, he was in one of the 3 musketeers movies, many years ago. Nice, quiet, peaceful town, and graveyard. Cool looking pub, inside and outside. I really am not a drinking man, but if I were, I would not mind spending my free time in a place like O'Brians.
    Thank you very much again GV, have a great day. 😊

    I was on a plane going to Jersey in the 70's, and he was sat opposite me. He was an unmistakable figure. He sat with his head in "Private Eye" all the journey, though that was from Cardiff airport, which is'nt too far away.
