I've always imagined it would make more sense to have a huge recycling plant that would gather everything from cars to electronics to clothing to wood etc, repairing and reusing or if necessary breaking everything down for every individual part or component, and returning the materials to a useful state that generally any manufacturer of any product can use. I imagine the sort of idea I'm imagining would be on the physical size and scale of the largest automotive construction plant in Germany perhaps even larger where anything and everything can be broken down for individual components or resources or repaired, fixed and sold on.
It doesn't matter.. Our planet has unlimited resources.. And plenty of room to throw rubbish.. So that makes sense why they're doing things like that.
@@fdr3170 I suspect we have what seems like unlimited resources harvest and unlimited room to discard our waste, but I suspect there is a limit to all of this a big limit but a limit nonetheless and if we carry on increasingly producing and wasting, in the end when this planet is out of resources and room to chuck our waste and then we're not going to be in a good place.

It's fascinating, and a bit alarming to watch a pre-shredder in action. I work in a large scrapyard, and from the pre-shredder, the bits go through a hammer mill, to break the bits into manageable pieces, and from there the pieces are sorted automatically, and processed further in a kibbling mill which reduces the pieces to a uniform size of about half centimetre granules. From a car and a load of kitchen appliances, to a sack of granules in an hour or so.

@@MachTuck - It's loaded into containers, sold, and shipped abroad, to China, India, and Africa (usually to Tin Can Island in Nigeria). Aluminium and Stainless Steel are usually recycled in plants in the UK.

@@MachTuck - Most of the sorting is automatic, using magnets, and by the weight of the fragments, etc. However, some valuable items are still picked off conveyors by hand - these are usually items containing copper, like motor armatures, relays, servo motors, that sort of thing. There has to be a human prescence too, as sometimes, very hard items can escape being broken up. These can block the machinery, or can come through, but have to be removed before they can smash the rollers on the smaller conveyors. These bits are called 'unshreddables', and are usually (a) extremely heavy, (b) blue with heat (c) really big and awkwardly shaped. This is only a real problem if they get to the final magnetic sorting rotor - and then everything has to be stopped, we have to get in the magnet drum hopper, and try to get the piece off the rotor, and drop into a lower conveyor. From there, we get a magnet crane to lift it off, and take it away. The biggest unshreddable I've so far seen, weighed a quarter of a ton. Sadly for me, it came through when I had a day off. It sat on the floor for a couple of days, as it took ages to cool down, and a load of us manhandled it on to a tractor shovel.

The claw machine was awesome 👌 that would save a lot of wear and tear on the shredder as it removes the heavier parts. Pulling the wiring harness out was a nice bonus.
Seems kinda wasteful to destroy the cars like that though, especially the Ford in the second video. There were many parts that could've been reused from that car.
Agreed, most cars that have been totaled in accidents go to junkyards and stay there until they’re robbed of 80 to 90% of their reusable parts.
