Japan: Kumano Kodo

  • Hiking the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes was one of the hightlights of my trip to Japan. It was a challenging 4 day hike across the Kii Peninsula, visiting two of the three grand shinto shrines: Kumano Hongu Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha.
I stayed in little towns along the way which was great. Kumano Travel coordinates with locals to make this possible. Almost everyone you meet on the trail has one of the Kumano Travel maps in their pack and there's a chance you'll be staying at the same place in the evening.
I made this video to commemorate the hike, mostly for myself. But there's a short "thoughts and tips" section at the end for anyone considering something similar.

Awesome video. Love how you showcase the beauty of Kumano Kodo, the forest, and the environment, instead of yourself. Commentary is just spot on. Which camera did you use? Can't wait to start my hike in a few days!

Thanks for the nice comment! I had a Sony A7SIII, mostly with a Sony 16-35mm lens on this trip. I hope you have a great time!

Great video! I’m curious, did you hIke it solo?

Thanks! Yes, I hiked it solo. It was easy to chat with other hikers though because we were all doing the same thing, using the same maps from the same company (Kumano Travel). I met a guy from Scotland, a lady from the South Korea helped me with my stamp book, and a cool couple from Utah who happened to be staying at two of the four places I stayed.

That sounds fantastic! I’m actually also hiking it solo in a few days. How did you take the amazing shots with you in it? Did the people you meet help you?

I hope you have a great time! I just bring a tripod and just edit out the bits of me coming back to the tripod to turn off the camera lol.@@ejercitojake
