I really love the idea of Mario being fallen from grace and doing anything to try and regain popularity, haven gone crazy with time and being reduced to a puppet.
That idea could work for a LOT of the platformer mascots during the PS1/N64 era that had great games but then absolutely got no other games after that, guys like Gex or Croc come to mind.
