I used to watch all those cartoons in 1980 on a tv just like that one, my aunt had a console tv set I'd sit on the floor and watch all of em, I was 6 in 1980, those sets were great you feltr like you were just closer to everything and you could totally zone out right there on the floor.
@seatboi I plan on doing recap when once I get to it, and do a full restoration on the unit. I have about 50 televsions that need restoration work hehe.
We got this tv right before Lost in Space season 2 in color, it cost $800 and had a record player (16/33/45/78) and an AM/FM radio. This tv worked until 1995 and maybe beyond, but my mom gave it away when she moved in 1995.
This TV looks like it is working great too and the CRT looks real good.. YAY top cat ! I love how there are the little slots cut in the hat for the ears!
Old cartoons on a old retro console TV, that's the way to go! I see that boomerang over there in the US is still showing the golden oldies. Over here boomerang now just shows crap, barely any old stuff at all anymore.
That's pretty groovy! I grew up watching a 1979 Zenith Chromacolor set which was similar but did not have the stereo at one end. I remember those cartoons though and haven't seen them in years. Cool. I just uploaded two videos today of my 1967 Zenith Console stereo - there's no TV in it but it does look similar in styling to your set. Happy Times!~
Heathcliff I loved that cartoon havent seen it in years, omg I remember that spinning Hanna barbera star animation from my childhood. I've watched a lot of these cartoons back in the 80s. TaleSpin loved that one too. the big bear piloting the airplane also played Baloo in the jungle book movie.
Good day, Wow you have quite a collection! Reminds me of what I had some 20 yrs ago. I wish I had space, as I had opportunity to get the top model in that line. It had a very fancy cabinet on casters. Remote controlled & good CRT. Bummer no room for it. Twin speakers. I like the RCA you showed in your costume. I believe it was 1953/4..I had the same model (for Canada). It was plain cabinet but otherwise same, & worked. Yes 17CP4 also. I have a few TV's you'd like! Like a 1953 CTC ?8? Colour.
WHAT a GORGEOUS SET!! I restore these for a living & you, Sir have one FINE example of an EARLY color TV! Congratulations! ;) PS if u ever need any knobs, tubes or parts, let me know...I have tons!
HEY! Wutz under the LID ON TOP? waited thru the whole vid & was hoping to see, but never did...could u do a vid of the innards? If it's a stereo unit, where is the right speaker? does it use the one in the TV escutcheon or is it on the end SIDE? You'd probably correct the vertical problem by re-capping (replacing ALL the capacitors). I restore these 4 a living if u ever need tubes or parts or work done, let me know! Thanks~!
Wow I remember watching Cartoon Network on Optus Vision back in 1996, that was an interesting time. How long has pay TV been operating for in America? Believe it or not, here in Australia pay TV didn't start operating until late 1995.
i miss the one i use to have mom fixed for me it was bigger than this one cause it had a lp player and stereo in it also i was two years old and iremember the first movie on bambi it was ghosty n staticy i didntm mind that any i jsut loved that tv.
I'm just seeing this now and I probably had the next generation of that chassis as my first color set used in 1974. I paid 115 for it used from a shop because it was a trade in with a hole in the top of the cabinet. I saved my berry picking money that summer to buy it. Mine had the green delamination around the edges and it wasn't that bright. I would say that tube is a V series tube with the high brightness phosphorus. They really did make older sets look much brighter and crisp and I would swap them into my older rebuilds if the rest of the set was worth it. So what happened to it, you tweak it nicely and sell it on or keep it for yourself?
The channel still airs Top Cat, Heathcliff's history, oh, and all of those little toy commercial things like the one at 3:02, known as "bumpers" to many people, still air on the channel to this day. That bumper at 1:49 is from a cancelled Boomerang block, and unless you're nocturnal you're not going to see many classics on the channel. Hope that defines everything you were asking.
I would simply love to have one of the console cabinets like this. Would it be too far fetched an idea to replace the TV with a workable modern (crap) DTV? I miss having a "real" TV as a part of our living room furnature. And to be able to hook up the existing speakers too would be cool. Just fishing for comments, as I've been thinking about this idea for a long time now.
I am sorry, but we can't give any advice on that, as it goes against our mission of restoring and preserving our past and our history of electronics, something we will never see again.
BAD idea. you would turn in into something completely worthless and -very likely soon after the warranty of the TV you took the parts from expires- useless. you should use a digital converter box. the picture qualitaty of those sets isnt that bad!
I totally agree that it is not the best solution. But to find a working antique TV and to find a person to repair and do upkeep would be very difficult for the average person like myself. With so many console TV sets being destroyed, and given to thrift stores wouldn't it be better to use the cabinets for something rather than see them destroyed or sent to the dump? I'd give my eyeteeth to have the one I grew up with now. Thanks you for the replies.
+Loren Robertson have you tried the tv out? of its works now, it will very likely go on like that. stuff back then was build to last. no planned obsolence like todays crap. it might have some dry caps but not necessarily. is the TV tube or solid state (semiconductor)? try to turn it on, i would recommend using a variac especially on a tube set. if something white appears on the screen, at least the picture tube is ok. now connect the dtv box. if it doesnt work, you could take the chassis (curcuit board) out and bring it to a repair shop. if all that brings no solution, how was your plan for it? putting an lcd screen inside? i dont know if that possible but i dont thing so. remind those have 16:9 picture and not 4:3 like the old ones. if you plan to do that, please keep the original parts so it can still be restored in the future
I HEAR ya! I got about that many, too! Just don't have the money for caps or time to re-cap em' all, so I just re-cap 1 when I have a little extra money & time. Lost my TV shop a year ago & after losing it unexpectedly had a heartattack & nervous breakdown, so spent the last yr in recovery, slowly gettin back into it...let me know if u need any work done...I'm poor, so could really use the money
Aqui em casa tinha uma TV assim, era um móvel bem grande era TV preto e branco compartimento para guardar discos e radio vitrola marca standard Electric! Rio de Janeiro RJ Brasil
I was watching this vid again because it popped up in the recommended section... Started to get absorbed in Talespin right before you shut it off :-) I was wondering, did we ever discuss who the OEM of the Channel Master CRT could have been? I don't think they made their own tubes.
i have a 1978 zenith 25 inch console sitting in my back room, it's going to be repaired soon and will be going in the living room of my future house, i like old, vintage stuff, including kitchen appliances(refrigerator, dishwasher, range, etc) and thats what im going to have in my own house, fuck new shit!!!!!!!
Nice TV, but you have to wonder what they were thinking. If they were going to invest all that money in a giant speaker system, why not just make it a TV/Stereo. I'd think having speakers that far to one side would be distracting anyway. I suppose they could have made extra money by selling a right-hand speaker and a stereo-in-a-hutch for people who wanted to upgrade a set like this.
I get it now, after watching the other video. It was a novel way of getting a TV and stereo in one cabinet, but I'll bet it put off a lot of potential buyers. An interesting, nicely preserved, if somewhat quirky piece history. Hope it has held up as well in the last 8 years as it had up to 2009.
great post, a true testiment to american quality zenith built some of the best radios and tvs americans should still have those jobs. modern electronics are junk
Thanks a lot. 1967 was the year when I opened my eyes for first time. For watching Hanna Barbera cartoons.
I used to watch all those cartoons in 1980 on a tv just like that one, my aunt had a console tv set I'd sit on the floor and watch all of em, I was 6 in 1980, those sets were great you feltr like you were just closer to everything and you could totally zone out right there on the floor.
It just seems right to watch those cartoons on that TV.
@seatboi I plan on doing recap when once I get to it, and do a full restoration on the unit. I have about 50 televsions that need restoration work hehe.

This TV is also a stereo with a record player and am/fm tuner. 2 8" woofers and 2 oval speakers.
Newer high quality VCRs, especially S-VHS, have built-in Time Base Correctors. It's great that it uses the full sound system for the TV audio!
Back when Boomerang had different cartoons, nowadays they play either mostly play Tom & Jerry, Looney Tunes, etc.
This TV looks like it is working great too and the CRT looks real good..
YAY top cat ! I love how there are the little slots cut in the hat for the ears!
Its amazing how expensive even a 20 inch black and white was in those days. This t.v costed thousands
It would be fun to watch Back To The Future on that TV :-)
OMG Top Cat, I haven't seen that in ages.
Watching vintage cartoons on a vintage consolo set. That rocked.
Old cartoons on a old retro console TV, that's the way to go!
I see that boomerang over there in the US is still showing the golden oldies. Over here boomerang now just shows crap, barely any old stuff at all anymore.
That looks like a home entertainment system. Glad the TV is still working fine.
Very nice! Its very hard to find zenith combos like that. I bet it has a 23XC38 chassis!
2021 revisiting the past
Great cartoon selection
That's pretty groovy! I grew up watching a 1979 Zenith Chromacolor set which was similar but did not have the stereo at one end. I remember those cartoons though and haven't seen them in years. Cool.

Awesome set!
please get a capture card for that tape. PLEASE!
One thing I miss is the old tinny sound coming from the single speaker on these old televisions.
@Maxxarcade No, I don't think we've discussed that.
That is one awesome set , I have lots of Hanna Barbera on DVD . Great video spats

Shew....replying to a 13 year old comment! Any chance you STILL have parts for these? :)
that was like todays 70" back then
HEY! Wutz under the LID ON TOP? waited thru the whole vid & was hoping to see, but never did...could u do a vid of the innards? I miss the 80's

channel master picture tube 9:01
Nice set! When you get a TBC, make sure it's full frame!
o staticool, it brings back so many memories i love it, all nice n staticy memories i love em all i hope to get it back one day.
Wow I remember watching Cartoon Network on Optus Vision back in 1996, that was an interesting time. How long has pay TV been operating for in America? Believe it or not, here in Australia pay TV didn't start operating until late 1995.
@classicphile your memories are quite similar to mine, as I was also born in '67.
How did you get boomerang with comcast?
Very nice! At least with a TV like that, you can actually put the cable set top box on the set.
Can you please tell me about the speakers, please?
i miss the one i use to have mom fixed for me it was bigger than this one cause it had a lp player and stereo in it also i was two years old and iremember the first movie on bambi it was ghosty n staticy i didntm mind that any i jsut loved that tv.

1:49 ~ 2:12 Next and Ending
Not Anymore... Boomerang Is Now A Cartoon Network Spare-Up.
AWESOME! It works great!

nice TV
There was only so much you could do with the picture then, so you built big bad console sets w/huge throaty sound!
The theme sounds like family guys
Hah, wonderful.
