    About SWITCHED AT BIRTH:
    “Switched at Birth” tells the story of two teenage girls who discover they were accidentally switched as newborns in the hospital. Bay Kennish grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother while Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing at an early age due to a case of meningitis, grew up with a single mother in a working class neighborhood. Despite overwhelming socio-economic and ethnic differences, both families must learn to co-exist as parents and blend their lives into one for the sake of their daughters.

    All of the stuff that she said prior to mingo was very racist and unacceptable. But what mingo did, in my eyes, wasn't racist. He didn't dress in black face, he didn't go around shouting the N word. He dressed like lil wayne dresses. I liked this episode but I also felt conflicted about it

    • @callanightshade8079
      @callanightshade8079 5 лет назад +16

      Same here. I didn't see what Mingo did as racist. It was a costume party and Lil Wayne is a celebrity. Everyone of all nationalities dress up like their favorite celebrities, it's fun to do because it's like you're honoring them in a way (just my take on it anyway)
      I don't agree with the article at all and the way situations like this are typically handled only makes matters worse. Every time. The way I think it should have gone is they should've sat down and spoken to each other like adults about the situation. If they couldn't work it out alone then go talk to a counselor (seeing as it is a college)
      I can believe Daphne's heart was in the right place when she wrote the article and didn't mean for it to sound racist but it turned out that way. Again, I think what she should've done was talk to both of them about what was going on. Not side with anyone, and wrote an article explaining how Mingo's costume wasn't racist but also point out how she understands where Iris is coming from on the matter.

    • @Weird-Girl
      @Weird-Girl 5 лет назад +12

      Exactly! Like, honestly I liked the episode but I don’t feel like mingo was being racist. It was a costume party. A black person could dress as a white celebrity and it wouldn’t be a big deal or considered racist. So why wouldn’t it be the same for white people?
      And saying that lil Wayne, a black celebrity, is your favorite celebrity is meant to be an honor. Not an insult 😂

      Jen Manbegrot actually I’m an adult. And not white. I’m just saying in my opinion, someone dressing up as a celebrity for a costume party shouldn’t be considered racist. No matter what ethnicity it is. If Iris had been the one to dress up as Katy Perry, I bet you Daphne wouldn’t be like: oh you’re making fun of white people cause you’re dressed as a white singer.
      It’s just facts XD because it’s not actually racist. However. Later on in the show, when the cotton ball incident happens, THAT is racist. And demanded action.

    Even with all the "oh woe is me" stuff going on in her life, Iris is still overreacting. Mingo wore a costume to a coustume party that's it in a nutshell. She seems to just be blinded by everyone else's racism that she automatically pinned Mingo as racist even though he did nothing wrong.

      Mingo didn't dress like a "black guy"! He wasn't making fun of black culture, he dressed like a black singer, which was the theme of the party. Also she never said anything about talking to Mingo, the RA, about those issues. I get that she is upset he didn't care enough to talk to her and others about it, but if she wants a voice, well should she speak to him about it first, instead of assuming the worst and giving up?

    • @annabethgrace5432
      @annabethgrace5432 7 лет назад +9

      Exactly. The costume wasn't the entire issue; it was the straw that broke the camel's back on top of everything else she'd experienced, and Iris was supposed to be able to trust Mingo and Daphne to listen to her and be sensitive, and that felt like betrayal.

    • @kathrynIS

      This issue with racism SAB is doing is poorly executed, I'm...well I'm not African american like Iris , I'm half Filipino and I don't get it Mingo was dressing as his fav rapper, that's not racist , this storyline was poorly done and I don't get why its offensive?, If they wanted to introduce the topic of racism I can think a few better ways that would at least make more sense as a story.

    Although I think Iris was overreacting, Daphne was under-reacting to her friends emotional pain and feelings. Everything Iris said that happened to her was awful and all kinds of wrong, but this wasn't even the first time Daphne acted like that to a friend. She does it to her family as well. Maybe if I saw all of the episodes, I'd understand more, but I don't understand why everyone was so offended. I've seen more offensive costumes then that. Is this show still going or was it canceled?

      This was a clip from the second episode of the last season. Yes, it's over now. I think it was ridiculous to put Daphne in the midst of this, when she was raised by a Puerto Rican woman, can empathize with this because of her deafness, and, as you said, she's pretty much been in this situation before...but maybe that's just me. Honestly, I think Bay, who was raised by white people and really hasn't had to think too much about race issues, would've been a better pick.

A person should be able to feel safe walking, talking, and sleeping especially in their own dorm room without feeling like they are about to be attacked. Daphne was definitely under reacting. Iris definitely had a right to over react about everything that happened.

      As a black male this episode was so stupid. She was overreacting as black people in today's world are not accosted as much as black twitter would have you believe.
      Listen Black Fold and White folk to what I am saying
      1. All people have stereotypical views of people and culture they are not familiar with. This does not mean they are racist if they do not understand an aspect of your culture or they might think it does not make sense.
      2. I would ask my fellow black people how many of them actually understand Asian culture, Latino Culture, Arabic Culture etc.. I am sure if a one of these outraged black people actually went to another country that was not their own and got accused of being a racist for not understanding something that that racial group did, they would not feel very good about that. So the paranoia needs to stop,
      2a. If a person puts a confederate flag on your door, you report it and then ask for it to be investigated, You do not go on a rant blaming all white people for the actions of an individual. For all Iris knew it could have been another black person putting the flag on her door push racial tensions. Iris acted like she was being put back in slavery. Tons of White people have done stupid things but the same can also be said for Black people as well as other racial groups.
      3. The term People of Color (P.O.C) is stupid as white people are also people of color. unless you are saying that white people are just super white and have no color in their body. Let's stop using that term and figure out something else instead.
      4. The using of the term SAFE SPACE is ridiculous as it makes these 'COLLEGE STUDENTS" look like little children who cannot handle intellectual diversity and be challenged on their thoughts. Being black does not and should not mean you are unable to handle any criticism of your ideas as the same goes for white people. Her Safe Space should be her home and inside her Dorm room where she can close the door and be left alone, other than that she needs to realize the world does not abide by her rules and she needs to do some actual growing up.
      5. Everyone in this world needs to just respect everyone and if somebody makes a cultural mistake just let them know and DO NOT attribute it was due to a racist intent . That would be projecting your own insecurities on them and it could make them resentful of you and that does not help anyone.
      This episode was written so poorly as it tried to act like ti was showing the intellectual side and and also the side of Iris. But instead it ended with Iris getting the last word, making the person watching the show think she is right and Daphne was wrong.
      Iris was overreacting and she needs to be shown how to better handle rude people and not run away.

    • @malloryweeks3306

      Jacob Star I agree. Daphne was wrong in saying that college isn’t about being safe. It is. A person, no matter who they are, has a right to be able to feel safe walking down the hallway without the fear of being attacked. School, even college, should be a safe spot to go to.

    I didn't see Mingo as a racist which is why the issue at the end of the last issue seemed to be disconnected. But the stuff Iris says here is racist and it makes sense that Daphne doesn't see it. Daphne may not be with Iris every second of the day, but there's also a big fact that I don't think many people look out for: You don't look for racism. Iris's perspective was something Daphne could never understand, of course Daphne didn't know, she didn't think about racism being on campus.
    One of the things that have been brought up repeatedly is Daphne's last name, Vasquez and because her mom's Puerto Rican she is too. I'm surprised they didn't expand upon that rather than having characters from the old neighborhood call her out for moving into her birth parents home.
    I didn't like how they executed this, I could see if Mingo was in actual black face like what they did with Sam from the Tyler Perry show Love Thy Neighbor(But he didn't know what black face was, but it was still wrong). Mingo just dressed up like a rapper that he liked and emulated his own behavior.
