- You probably know their names and work, but you might not know the stories of their personal lives. They're impressionists, artists who worked during the 19th-century art movement that started with a group of Paris painters who faced stiff opposition from the conventional art world. In this series, art writer Waldemar Januszczak explores the back stories and works of four of the movement's most influential painters: Pissarro, Monet, Renoir and Bazille. To get a complete picture, Januszczak visits the cities and towns where the men lived and from which they drew their inspirations.

Waldemar is the eeal deal. A pleasure to listen to. The way that he connects the art to what was happening culturally, to history, and to product development is fantastic.
His passion for the subject always makes it so much easier to watch and understand!
Few academics in their field make the best teachers. Having the knowledge is one thing, inspiring that knowledge onto others, in a way that is digestible and interesting is really amazing!
Taken collectively, this series on impressionist art by Waldemar is a true masterpiece. The way in which he brings these artists and that time period and their art to life is truly a joy to behold. Anyone remotely interested in art and more specifically impressionist art needs to check this out. So well done.
Totally the best and the way he leads up to a particular fact like why is he out there digging with a shovel in the forest? Oh, it’s because they wanted to lower their canvases into the ground, to a height that they could paint. What?!?! Why didn’t they use the ladder?
Waldemar delivers a brilliant balance of informative whilst engaging and adds just the perfect touch of humour without compromising on the tone of the documentary
I think he sounds, looks and walks like shit. I can’t stand him as his energy a hideous and ruins any art or deteriorates any art into supposed art that his family of cousin breeders who claim to be jew-ish too. I think any decent looking person minus a hunchback from greedy first cousin parents would be better than him!!!

I love hearing about the artists lives before they became the artists we know. It's all so very fascinating! Who knew there were "starving artists" who were filthy rich? Nearly 4 hours of this straight is wonderful, too. I'd rather not spend my time hunting for things to watch, so I love long documentaries.

I love you Waldemar, so good at explaining, and perspective with a bit of cheeky humor. So smart without sounding preachy. One of my absolute favorite lines of his, out of thousands (and I've watched almost all. ) Was his line about the goths, not the historical goths but the sad imos, the ones dressed in all black, and usually covered in tattoos, he said something like, I think they just need a hug. 🤗🤗. I feel the same about allot of the people in the world today. And especially those who do the body art tattoos etc..(cut and paste pop culture (imo) on the skin for some kind of self expressing need for self esteem, trying so hard to be cool and unique but really just following a trend) .....more hugs more art, more intelligent and cheeky perspectives and please more Waldemar!
This man is just brilliant, full stop. He focuses on the human aspect of the painting, not the technical one, which makes it so enjoyable to watch.

This was very informative and extremely entertaining. Waldemar is the tour guide of art and makes you want to take every trip with him that you can go on. This is my first trip and I am looking forward to another one already.
At age 13 I fell in love at first sight with an art print of Monet’s “The Poppy Field Near Argenteuil”, and began reading about the French Impressionists. I was also learning to draw. Years later I taught myself to paint. To this day my favorites are Monet and Renoir.
I’d love to learn to paint!!! Any advice for someone getting into it?

I totally agree, I felt like I knew very little before Waldemar, I've never had the opportunity in life to even go to an art gallery, (I'm not totally ignorant to art or understanding and interpreting it nor enjoying it though), he brings them into a light you've never seen before and you get a real sense of the art and artists and the times when they lived. Thank you Waldemar you have a gift for educating and expressive storytelling thats made art such a beautiful experience.
A brilliant show, with an unhinged (but still excellent) presenter. Waldemar is the man.

IMO Impressionist Artist brought life to art & having it on chocolate boxes etc keeps it alive today. It got me interested in travel many years ago, it was amazing to be where they were once. Thankyou Val’ fantastic as usual

@Adam Lane. I couldn't agree more. As much as I positively ADORE All Things Artistic, when I was in college, my Art History Class-the first class of the day-was where I caught up with lost sleep. If Waldemar had been my Prof I would have caught up with sleep in my Social Sciences nod. Uhm.. ..class.....

I kept watching Waldemar's documentaries. They are so compelling and brings you to each artist's head and emotions in a very interesting way.
This was such a great gateway into the world of Impressionism, Waldemar truly makes you fall in love with the works. This video was an excellent way for my family to get into art and enjoy it. Please make more videos!

uh, you realize this isnt 'their take' on anything, its an old BBC documentary they just stole and posted. Right? Instead of watching RUclips chanells you should just watch tv. This show is over 13 years old surprised you only found it on youtube. It was on tv right up to 6 months ago

Waldemar is such an engaging story teller- brings great art to life with humour and astonishing knowledge. My most favourite art historian ever. Children who aren’t interested in Art would be entertained and educated if this was shown in schools.

Those Cassat character studies really do hit you right between the eyes. I'd never seen them before, only the famous mother and child painting. They're bloody amazing.

I LOVE how he poses real people in various positions from Degas’ art, and casually walks by them sometimes, or points out certain aspects at other points. It’s so immediate.
What a labour of love this must have been to make. The most comprehensive film about Impressionism out there. Should be required watching for all students of art.
His narrative is fabulous . His in dept knowledge is the most informative I’ve ever enjoyed. I watch him over and over!
really enjoyed this "deep dive'. Beyond the artists and their muses but also the equipment they used and why there were changes at that time, geographic influences.

Hello from Uruguay, I have been watching videos from this channel since last year and they are amazing. I love Waldemar's way of explaining art. Anyone else from Uruguay who has been watching them?
I didn't care for Waldemar initially, but the algorithm kept pushing him at me for some reason, and he really grew on me. I never really cared for impressionism, but his deeply interested and personal storytelling changed my view. I've come to really savor his episodes, perhaps especially those on subjects I care the least about.
I never get tired of watching these!
Wow. I woke up at 430 am with this playing on my iPhone and I’ve been transfixed since. The fascinating commentary, matched with visitation to the actual places these paintings were done, and the sweeping and dramatic piano playing, make this a masterpiece of its own. I want to re-watch the entire thing now. Amazing and well done.
About 20 years ago my mother (now deceased) audited an Ari History class on Impressionest artists at Penn State Uiniversity, near her home. She did this to enhance her appreciation of an upcoming vacation in Paris. I accompanied her on that trip and we spent a good deal of time at the Musée d'Orsay, studying many of those artists and their paintings. Thanks to my second-hand educaion I still remember them in vivid detail. Thank you for renewing my education, and my time in Paris with Mother.

Sir, this was a joy to watch this documentary. It is extremely successful in transmitting the Impressionist movement. I'm in art school and just covered Impressionism, you provided a whole lot of information that is crucial. Great job in this documentary, I saw the whole thing on one sitting while doing homework. The subtle moments of comedy were good as well.

His videos are so well made. I’m no expert, but all of the different shots (like with the pig, carrying the canvas, narrating from the boat on the Seine, etc) are absolutely incredible.

This is my first discovery of Waldemar, and I am hooked. I painted a series on Monet's waterlilies in pastel, and was pleased to see it featured in one segment. The softness of the look and pure color in the pigment is unmatched in any other medium. I will continue to follow him.

Always loved the impressionists but this guy puts a different angle on the why's and where's and sat here at 6.30 in the morning after watching for an hour i am now watching my neighbours chimney shadows thinking how would Monet have painted what I can see . Brilliant Video.
