I just found your channel. First I'd like to thank you for your time, effort and advice. I'm gathering information on starting a box truck business and your videos are very informative. I know it's hard when all you're trying to do is help, but please try your best to disregard all the negativity on the internet. It gives them joy. I appreciate all that you do. Thank you!
I just started n been cancelled on loads so just in case I use dT board n dispatcher...they told me program isn't happening now penske...enterprise in jersey 800 week after 5000 mikes month 50 cent mile.....
Another reason you got that email is because they dropped the rates on those contracts. A lot contractors are pulling out because they can’t run trucks for $40 and hour and make a profit.
Thanks for the info and blunt honesty...I'm in the process (only) now of acquiring a truck with enterprise, having just filed for my authority last week. (Penske told me they won't lease any trucks to me with my authority being in existence for less than three years. Weird.) I'm taking the risk because I have an amazon DC close by (I'm in NYC) and it's BUSY and I'm going to try to aggressively seek loads from as many brokers and load boards as I can bargain with. Wish me luck! LOL!
If you rent with Penske and build a relationship with a local office, you might find more flexibility after you’ve established the relationship. You gotta keep in mind what they see as risk is that they’re signing a new trucking company up for a 4-6 year lease, they’re ordering a brand new truck for that lease, and 80% of new companies fail in their first year. So, it really is a risk for them to get involved with a new business. That’s why you have to build the relationship, so you can show them that you’re part of the 20%, not the 80%. Good luck!
This video was exactly what I needed to hear. After 3 weeks running box truck loads for Amazon with a rental from Ryder, its definitely not worth it financially for me. And like you i have other streams so I don't really need to be doing this. I too am contemplating either going semi and hiring a driver or just suspending operations for a while until i decide if its worth my time and the risk versus reward factor is real. If I keep the business going, I'll definitely have to work outside of Amazon. Ya gotta know when to pivot for sure.
Ryder is charging $2,100 a week and you have to buy their insurance in addition to your own commercial insurance. None of this includes the inflated diesel gas prices or DEF Fuel. Your profit margins are going to the rental. It’s hard to justify paying that much a week when you have a mileage cap that prevents you from grossing enough money to afford the weekly rental rate.
I think getting people to understand that business is not all gold and glitter is a good thing. I've seen so many people jump into this game without knowing all the info for their situation. Information is Information you as a person determine how you receive it.
thank you for your support. I removed the last comment bc it was dumb, and unfortunately your supportive response didn’t stay. I grew up on dirty floors, with cardboard insoles in my k-mart shoes, in West Virginia. I’m the only person in my family with a college degree. I had a successful career for ten years as a police officer, have a BA, 2 MBAs, a Law Degree, and am currently successfully operating 3 businesses. They’d rather be misled and told about all the flowers and unicorns, and then be mad when they find out it’s not like that. I’m just trying to help the few who are smart enough to think for themselves. thanks again for going to bat for me. have a great day!
Hey man I paid cash for my box truck got my own DOT and MC tried to get in with Amazon but I guess I don’t have enough insurance coverage. Can I pull for the under someone else’s name using my own DOT and MC? much appreciated if you could shy some light on the matter thanks
Thanks for the Info! Also was talking to this food service driver who just got his cdl license. He said that Amazon paid for him to get his cdl license while he worked in the warehouse. He said it is a new program they started
Man I just bought two box trucks they both run on gas and they 12ft box trucks one has a lift gate and the other one has a ramp that I had to buy because it didn't come with one downside to that truck is that I have to put the ramp inside of the truck once I'm done packing but I'm using these box trucks for junk removal really considering crossing over to Amazon I've been looking at a lot of videos trying to get information and soaking up game
Semi cost alot to maintain and pay insurance, you have to be a good driver or have a great driver to drive your truck...it's easier to just quit box truck business, it's cheap. Box truck is tough but if u know the right people then u will eat good.
OTR driving sucks with the time away from family and home. Unless you have an amazing contract it's tough and there's never enough parking at Truckstops for your 10 hr break.
man, thanks for this. I always worry about how my colleagues will see this move. we’re a critical bunch. I appreciate the support. I hope I can make more of a difference in people’s lives here, than I did to the system overall.
@@builtonboxes4374 Well guys, you're gonna have to let me join the club. I'm also a lawyer... who left practice to drive truck, lol! Yeah. No shit. Small world. So glad to see I'm not the only one jumping ship. And you're right. You don't have to be a lawyer to impact people's lives in an important way.
@@warrenprice2137 Man I love hearing from you guys. It makes my decision feel so much more legitimate. Shoot me an email sometime and lets connect. bigorangetransport@gmail
the risk will always be on the carrier hauling freight. In order to operate legally, the trucks have to be insured on the liability policy. There's not really a way to mitigate that risk through corporate structure. Even if they're owned by a separate company, the carrier operating them will bear the risk, just like if you rent a vehicle from Penske.
I don’t know that it will exactly double, but it will be close, bc the risk to the insurance company is increased. I think if you have multiple vehicles kn different weight classes it might not double, but it probably would if you have two vehicles in the same weight class.
Hey what do you mean as a way to get your authority. Is there a requirement to drive under someone? I thought it was just something you file paper work for?
Is the process for working with semis similar to starting up with box trucks? Getting your authority etc. or is there something more that needs to be done?
same thing, but you have a couple more hoops you have to jump through. Obviously a CDL, but also signing up for drug and alcohol testing, and IFTA for fuel tax reporting and such
I think potentially, yes. it really depends on whether that center is an active one. There are a few within 100 miles of me, but they are not the ones pushing loads to my area. Unfortunately, the center pushing loads to my area is 4 hours away. good luck!
I feel like if you can’t buy your own truck it’s pointless. Not to knock anyone at all, but the extra issues you go through just doesn’t seem worth it to me. I know we all have to start somewhere though, but that just seems like a headachez
To be honest this is great news because the business is getting saturated with all these box trucks ,thus making amazon give cheap loads and not enough loads
Tell it like it tis . Be real I don’t like bullshit . Outstanding . I’m curious I’m eligible to retire I was considering a box truck after my retirement . But than I heard about becoming a broker / dispatcher. Do you think inquiring about becoming a broker / dispatcher, would financially be a better move . Thank you
If I'm being completely honest, the trucking side of this business has been so overwhelming to learn, I haven't had a ton of time to figure the brokerage side out. That's one of the next moves. Dispathing can be lucrative, but its oversaturated with half-ass people, and there are no training or regulatory requirements.
@@builtonboxes4374 thanks for the reply a little late but thanks . Do you believe if a person retires and have a pension , and they decide to rent a box truck ; the retirement check can pay for the rental and insurance every month and the load money other than fuel goes right in the pocket of the driver . Which is less overhang on the driver . Do you agree with this .

You forgot to mention Ryder also offers lower rental rates for those driving for Amazon. Makes me question if you did your research before posting this video.
I wonder, based on your comment, whether you just didn’t pay attention, or whether you have a hard time understanding the point of anything. The video was about changes Amazon is making to their relationships and partnerships. Ryder had nothing to do with it. I’m also currently working on a video comparing renting to buying, and that video will be where I discuss the appropriate rental options. So, maybe try and focus on what’s being said, instead of what’s not relevant to the discussion.
@@builtonboxes4374 with all do respect, this gentleman is correct Ryder does have a relationship with Amazon so much so that Ryder will change there weekly insurance rates...”if you choose to take there insurance” also there CPM is sixteen cents from the average joe who walks in, which is twenty nine cents. Would it be worth it to rent a semi hire a driver. Then lease on with a company. Without your authority for way to get your authority?
