    I’m not quite sure why you have your bio section where you do. On my filter system that is the last part of the water passing through. If it’s working then I guess it’s alright that way. One thing I’ve learned is this. You REALLY need to manage your fish load per gallons. Hard to believe just how much poo Koi generate. I’m over loaded because I ended up with 3 babies last year. Didn’t even know I had a female. Because of this I simply had to keep them. They are 10 inches long now in 9 months time. So with this I’m cleaning my filters way more than I’d like to. The water is crystal clear so it’s all working great though. A total change may be coming. Great video young man.

      I’d be interested to know if you still feel that way in what, 7-10 years time when the mechanicals and electrics start playing up and you can’t get spares because the manufacturer is no longer in business!
      Unfortunately I think the air is going to be blue around a lot of ponds in a few years time when they start failing!

    • @hippo5346
      @hippo5346 3 года назад +2

      @@ces69 hi Cecil . I agree , the drawback with drum filters is more moving parts which can potentially fail . I think you have to balance this against having a virtually maintenance free system , which is desirable for many . In the 10 years I've been pond keeping the quality and affordability of entry level drums has improved vastly and I'm sure this will continue . I'm guessing, not many people with a successfully running drum system would change it for anything else 👍

    • @ces69
      @ces69 3 года назад

      @@hippo5346 I agree in principle as they remove more suspended matter than just about anything else!
      But for me reliability is key!
      I’ve been keeping Koi for probably over 25 years and seen various new “wonder” innovations come and go and at the moment “Drums” are flavour of the month!
      The problem with drums is they have so many potentials for failure which would result in loss of bacteria that would be catastrophic for the fish!
      It’s just a risk I’m not prepared to take to get.....10-20% better clarity!
      My old multi-bay systems allow me to feed pretty much what I want with no Ammonia or Nitrite problems despite a fairly high sticking level!
      A Nexus would probably reduce my maintenance time, particularly with an auto kit, and that’s probably the way I would go!

    I think you’ve done the right thing putting brushes in the vortex bay, small vortex never seem to be able to perform, they really need to be significantly bigger to create the vortex effect needed!
    So using it as a brush bay/mechanical filter is the most efficient use!
    I’d go one step further though and fill it with brushes which will free the second brush bay up to be used as another biological chamber!
    Although brushes can provide a surface for nitrifying bacteria to colonise, it’s very little for the space they take up. A more efficient media could provide a bio chamber that would boost bio capacity in your 5 chamber filter by 20%!
    In theory, 20% more bio surface area equals 20% more biological filtration equals 20% better processing of fish waste equals 20% less Ammonia and Nitrite to worry about!🤔

    Something that caught my eye was the speed of your trickle in. My 3 stage says that the flow rate should be 2ltr per minute to adequately remove the chlorine. Maybe your nitrite levels are higher as the chlorine may be killing your bacteria. Worth a check as it only takes in minute, literally. Interesting to hear the results. Lovely pond by the way

    • @ces69
      @ces69 3 года назад +2

      I don’t let tap water, even pre-filtered anywhere near my filter system!
      I feel more comfortable topping up into the pond as any Chlorine or other chemicals that may not have been removed will be diluted in the pond before they reach the bio chambers of the filter!

    • @maximusprofit2578
      @maximusprofit2578 3 года назад +1

      I agree. I've checked my litres per minutes many times and that is running really very fast. There surely has to be some metals getting through to your b/bacteria. I would defo check your flow rate. The flow meters are useless at low flow so I just use a stopwatch and marked jug.
      Awesome vids as usual 👍👍

First 2 have static media and the last one is a moving bed, which i've not cleaned out in 3yrs. In an effort to cut down on cleaning, last year fitted a sieve filter before tub one. Maintenance now consists of 1. Two mins once a week to spoon out the gunge from the sieve filter 2.A flush through of tubs one and two once a month in the 6 summer ish months and every 2 months in the other 6 months. Each flush takes around 45 mins.....and thats it. All that said, will probably wind up getting a drum filter sometime in the not too distant future. Cheers mate

      Hiya, I bought 50ltres but didn't use it all. I would guess I used 40. Here's the video when I added it and how I prepared it before adding it to make it work quicker. 😉👍

      I have 2 multi bay systems in series which work great at maintaining water quality but am planning to swap one of the multi bays (the first) to a Nexus for just that reason, to reduce time spent on maintenance!

      @MikeZak101 3 года назад +2

      @@ces69 I fill your pain, I had a multi bay chamber filter on my old pond and basically became my life cleaning it, i couldn't imagine two of them.
      The nexus arn't the best but a lot cheaper then a drum and don't require more then 10 minutes to clean, plus you don't have to put your hands in, just turn a few valves and put the plug in.

    • @ces69

      @@MikeZak101 I get pretty good results from them and it’s really only the first gravity fed system that requires most maintenance, as being in series, it’s the first that catches most of the solids!
      The second system is all bio and just gets one chamber drained down and pumped to waste every couple of months!
      Drums undoubtedly remove more suspended matter from the water than pretty much any other system but most cost as much as a used car and what happens in 4-5 years time when the complicated electrics and mechanics start to fail and you can’t get spares because the manufacturer is no longer in business?
      No, if I can replace my first “Cloverleaf” system with a Nexus, that will do me, very little to go wrong or break!
      I’m a firm believer in you can never have too much filtration and will probably go for the 320 even though I could probably get away with the 220!

      @MikeZak101 3 года назад +1

      @@ces69 I have been running my two nexus 300's since 2005, if you get the bio side right it will never need cleaning, i run 150Ltrs of K1 in each with a 130lpm air pump on each and the bio side never needs cleaning.
      I have checked with a camera and the K1 hits the bottom of the bio chamber so nothing gets the chance to settle

      @@MikeZak101 Sounds perfect, exactly my reasons for contemplating the upgrade!
      I just don’t think the failure risk with drums is worth the extra 10-20% clarity you might achieve!

    Today I checked with my electric supplier to see how much I would be paying from 1st may as I would need to keep my pond and house heating running longer I was told that my standing charge and most other peoples standing charge have gone up to around £14 a month.
    So people will have to pay this before they use any gas or electric what a con.

    Beyond boarders
    You don’t think when you buy something from china it’s something you want and it’s cheaper than in the UK.
    I purchased a new air pump £31 cheaper from China than in the UK and noticed the 2 wires bright Red and Black.
    It seems electricals now come with no plugs on its to stop electrical items catching fire with cheap plugs fitted pointless as what do you do yes buy a plug online.
    So I sent an email off to china with a video on youtube to ask.
    I got a reply.
    回复:(无主题)
    HI.You meaning two red negative black positive.
    I can no see video now.
    No able to see youtube.
    I did not know that china censors everything phone calls e-mails and youtube.

      Yes good luck getting through to China. They only allow things out of the country and not in. The whole world has seen that over the last 12 months... 🤔🤔

    If you make the first 2 bays good mech filter you can get clear water true last bio bays and you only clean them once a year. what a weird setup.
