Powers might have been able to land that chopper...but he was headed right into a field where people were playing. He likely nosed the helicopter into the ground sacrificing his life and cameraman's in order to not harm those on the ground. A final act of selflessness that should be remembered. :)
I can’t imagine giving a broadcast like that when someone you worked with died.
Frank and Jess Marlow were close.
I remember this well from watching it live. And this is probably the only time I've seen it since then. That's how memorable it is.
Jess Marlow was our Best anchor in LA.....we looked up to Jess.....and his professionalism to his craft.....Thank you Jess.
That'd be Jess Marlow at the anchor desk reporting on the death of his colleague.

@@greatunz67 sí, verdad. Yes, true.
RIP
Francis Gary Powers
(1929-1977)
His life story was the most amazing and implausible American life. He was a fine person.
He definitely was a fine person. I was lucky to know him and to work with him in Los Angeles radio. A good dude.
OMG WOW! How sad for the families!
He was a U2 pilot
He was a traitor. He gave information to the Soviets.
Pathetic... We English don't blubber....
