Wow! What a season, huh? Alina went through a LOT, and I spent a long time thinking about what I wanted to say for her. I knew pretty early on that this was going to be a long video, but I didn't think it was going to be an explicitly longform video. After Andor, I'm still getting the hang of what it means to make videos that tie together more than just 1 or 2 narratives. So I have to give myself grace if I don't feel that this is "perfect". It's a completely new style for me!
In this video, I really wanted to focus on the impact that the Darkling's actions left on her. I'm sad that there's such a dearth of solo Alina videos after this season; most of them are ship related, and in general I didn't see a lot of people focusing on her PTSD. I knew, watching 2x05, that I had to include her monologue about what the Darkling did to her no matter what. I love that the episodes showed her getting angry, and losing control, and being unable to process her trauma. That's exactly what I hoped would happen, and I think Jessie Mei Li did a great job balancing all the different sides of Alina this season. So I think it was important to me to make that theme as clear as possible.
While I don't this video is a clear sequel to my first video about Alina, it's still interesting to compare the two. I noticed that Alina rarely uses her powers in Season 2, and when she does she's struggling to control them and it's usually in life or death situations. But there doesn't seem to be any joy in her using her powers, except for the brief moments after she takes the power of the Sea Whip. I think that was an intentional choice, and I think the whole of Season 2 slowly watched her try to take back control over her own body. I'm curious how Season 3 will interact with her powers.
The other thing I noticed, and tried to be intentional about, is that my first video has a lot of people telling Alina who she should be, what they expect of her, and predicting her future. I tried to make use of Alina's voice in this second video, and highlight a lot of what she's actually thinking, how she feels, and how she responds to these forces. It was also nice to bring back some clips from Season 1 that didn't make the cut for the first video ("What happens next is up to you." "None of this has been up to me!")
How have I gone this far without mentioning how fucking great it is that Alina is following in Clary's footsteps? When she brought Mal back from the dead, I actually hollered and threw my remote across the room. I never lose, I fear.
I also question, like...do I really "get" Alina? Does this video show a side of her that's folded within these shades of her character? I don't know if I feel comfortable saying yes to that question. So much of what I love about her character is the clear narrative about abuse, grooming, consent, bodily autonomy, and trying to put yourself back together afterward. Like there's a whole extra level to this when you consider the twist of the season being that she has to take Mal's power for her own, to save Ravka (To which I am also happy that we continue to develop the world's politics and keep emphasizing that West and East Ravka are probably not just going to be happy neighbors now that the Fold's gone. Also - the Fold being torn down after two seasons, the Darkling dying after two seasons, 1x08 being titled "No Mourners" and 2x08 being titled "No Funerals" - I really like how these two seasons mirror each other). Dear reader, please understand that I've never read the books and the Firebird twist actually knocked me out. Anyway, I don't know if I truly understand Alina yet, which means that I don't know how happy I feel about this video yet. We will see...
    Anyway, some editing notes:
    - "Freya" is a complimentary track to "Diya"; go listen to both of them, and you'll see what I mean. There's a reason I chose "Diya" for Inej :-)
    - "Lux" and "Iduna" are also compliments. I first heard "Iduna" here • (Marvel) Ikaris | Sacr... , and I wanted for a long time to make a video for it. It wasn't until I heard "Lux" here • Marisa Coulter | Oblivion (and was totally shocked because of how familiar it sounded) that I decided that I couldn't edit one song without including the other.
    - The cut sequence at 8:13 is the very first thing I edited minutes after the finale. It haunts me viscerally

I have seen, so many videos of her but you were the ONLY one who saw the PTSD and edited with HER in mind over any pairings (which naturally gets the twinflame pairing front and center but that's beyond the point) I'm not sure I understand what they want to show of her myself. I haven't read the books either, but from what I've seen of the series you encompassed everything we've been shown about her so far, from her own mind which is amazing because like you stated season 1 was her losing herself essentially then season 2 is finding herself and then partly losing herself again because the battle inside her is greater than all the others. It really sickens me how glorified that part of her story is, even if it IS in the books and I love that you showed it for what it is and the contrast between twinflames and what I call 'entropy'. However what I loved the most about this is you captured the intricate pieces of her mind in season 2 and you showed how the PSTD shaped her actions and such. This was beautiful, empowering and heartbreaking. Thank you so much for making this, there need to be more viewpoints like this.

Thank you so much 🥺 Yeah, I was similarly disappointed when I first did my research that a lot of S2 Alina videos were...mostly about her & the Darkling. I assume most people don't mean to glorify her relationship, and are genuinely interested in unpacking their dynamic (as am I!), but I was pretty shocked at this trend. Like I think I can count the number of *solo* videos (that are titled as such) on one hand? But for me, I was hoping and happy to see that S2 focused so much on her anger, her shame, her guilt, her recklessness.
Part of what attracted me to Alina was that her villain was not just a stranger with similarities to her, but someone who groomed her in his image, and she has this unique struggle of feeling both indebted to him and betrayed by him. That's why I LOVE the monologue in 2x05; she's ashamed that she can't access her power without thinking of the Darkling, she's ashamed that she still feels some kind of empathy for & attraction to him, and it makes her shut down any chance of healing and instead throw herself into dangerous situations.
And also, how can she heal when she's the Sun Summoner? She has the weight of the world bearing down on her, she "can't afford weakness", as Zoya says. I'm honestly surprised that more people don't enthusiastically celebrate her, since many of her "main character" traits are grounded in really interesting nuance.
While I loved the way the Darkling & Alina's dynamic was portrayed in Season 1, that admiration was entirely contingent on what happens *after* Alina breaks away from him. And I think, unfortunately, a lot of people are more interested in that first part than the second part. But I can't control what people love, so I can only try to portray the story that speaks to me the most. I'm very very curious what will happen in Season 3...will she just be a baddie from the jump? I think ingratiating yourself with the ruling class is such a questionable decision 😭 and I don't think (total guess!) that she's the type of person who can thrive or even heal there. So I do hope that we continue to go down this road of Alina thinking that she's moved past her trauma, and can finally make her own choices and own her power, when really EVERY choice she makes is directly influenced by that violence and abuse. Like what will she do now that Mal isn't in the picture to pull her back from the brink! I don't know!!!!

@@xxbludger Yes, yes they were some of them do, but that's whatever. Nothing shocks me anymore after the trend with The Invisible Life of Addie Larue (Currently reading) when it comes to people but that's beside the point. Exactly, there are almost no solo videos. So was I, and surprised by it because they spent so much of season 1 catering to the pairing I was afraid they'd just continue with fan service but boy did they deliver on her character development.
You hit the nail in the wall there, it is a different kind of dynamic one that gave way to that inner struggle you speak of for her. I loved that dialogue too because it was raw and Jessie delivered it with cruel clarity that this was someone who was suffering from not just a bad relationship, but even the good things that came out of it. Indeed, as the Sun Summoner she's expected to be healed, strong and the symbol the world needs her as. Eh, they're too busy focusing on the Darkling and Kaz- that's solely based on how many solo videos I've seen of these two.
I loved it too, there is complexity to it, and when she chose to forge her own path instead of following his like he was subtly trying to do- well that was why I kept watching. They do but exactly. You spoke the truth, and I thank you for that. I'm not sure, I know she looked like she enjoyed that power but I believe after that comes shame, unless she you know is corrupted by the darkness now. We're in entirely new territory here as the books went a different route and from what I've seen they want to drill into the minds of the audience "This is not her and should not be encouraged" which of course leads to the opposite but I digress. I want her to move past her trauma too and see it, but I fear she'll be in for more trauma realizing she's becoming the one thing she never wanted to be. Yes, that right there is the biggest thing without Mal there. I think she can do it. She might stumble, but she'll find herself even if he isn't there to bring her back. After all, she made the choice to turn against the Darkling on her own. So that inner strength is there, she just needs to remember her power was hers first, never his even if he opened the door.
